Wired Controller: Final Fantasy VI - Retro Review

"Final Fantasy VI is the absolute pinnacle of story-telling in video games. Never before or since has a title managed to elicit so many emotions with such a varied cast of characters. No matter who you are you will find someone to like in this motley crew (as well as someone to hate I’m sure), and you will be driven to complete their adventure. Various gameplay elements will make you wonder why they are so rarely used in RPGs today–because they are great–and the presentation is some of the best on the SNES with yet another classic soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu. While it is a bit hard to get into for those not familiar with Japanese RPGs (try Chrono Trigger first), it was and remains a game that simply cannot be missed."

Never got more than halfway through this game. Hopefully now that it's coming to PSN I can properly finish it. Although I know it won't beat FFVII in my book.

gameguru5476d ago

haven't played it but surely it can't be better than ffvii

LionheartAce5476d ago

It's always been better than VII. It's the best, even.

NukaCola5476d ago

This game had a great story & I loved the industrial steampunk themes. Classic game, but I loved every FF up to FFX. Ten just killed it, MMOs are a no go, XII was ok tho.

Kee5476d ago

I've been dying to play VI. It's the only numbered game I've not been able to get my hands on so far.

Diamondwolf5476d ago

VI is actually better than VII and I'm a VII fanboy. I played (What was American 3) but didn't get into the FF series until VII. since then I went back in to play VI and it was awesome.

I re-iterate, VI is better than VII but not by much, they are still close.

Also IMO 9 is better than both of them :)

Son_Lee5476d ago

FFVII has deep personal meaning to me, besides being my favorite story in the franchise BY FAR. FFX is a close-second, followed by FFVIII. I'm not much for steampunk, and it took a LOT of work for me to get into FFVI, but I'll give it another chance.

I think you have to an older 8 & 16 bit gamer to appreciate 6. I agree wholeheartedly. My top two are 6 & 9. 9 had an old school feel to it, even more so than 7 & 8. No FF in the last ten years has been able to match 9, and none are better 6 (of course to each their own; it's all preference)

NoUseMerc5476d ago

Great Review. I love the soundtracks from these old school RPG's. Definitely thinking of buying this.

Never played this but based on your review, I may have to eventually get around to it!

midiboss5476d ago

You nailed it. Best game of the series.

NoUseMerc5476d ago

Agreed. One of my favorite classic FF titles. Loved the music

Drewminati5476d ago

when r they going to remake this?

zackacloud5476d ago

2014 it 20th anniversary so it suppose remake in that year.

How ever wada said there big chance that ffv and ffvi remake on 3ds

WooHooAlex5476d ago

Probably my second favorite in the series.

I might get hammered for this but my favorite was actually XII. I had two 100 hour save files. The characters were meh and the story got a little complicated but the side quests were amazing.

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster Review – The Returners Return

Gary Green said: We Europeans got royally screwed with the releases of the first six Final Fantasy games. I’m sure you’d find plenty of dodgy imports or bootlegs if you looked hard enough, but we never actually got a proper release for any of them, at least not for the first editions. There was a lot of xenophobia in gaming at the time, so anything Japanese getting released in the west at all was nothing short of a miracle. It was an ugly trend that continued well into the 2000s when worldwide releases became the new norm.

FFVI is a timeless classic, surely one of the best games ever created.

_Decadent_Descent787d ago

I really do wish they'd give it the FF7R treatment.

phoenixwing787d ago

Ff6 is probably the most deserving for that

Cacabunga786d ago

Octopath traveller or Star Ocean remake treatment would fit it better i think

FinalFantasyFanatic786d ago

I'd rather it play more or less the same by have the 3D chibi graphics from Ever Crisis, I don't want them to change the story like they did with FF7R.

Wish they still made them like this, obviously with a graphic update.
