Exclusive: Interview with PS3 hacker KaKaRoTo

Neowin recently interviewed PS3 hacker KaKaRoTo, discussing topics ranging from Homebrew to other hackers:

'Neowin: How did you feel when you first heard of Anonymous’ planned “attacks” against Sony?

KaKaRoTo: "Well, when I first heard of it, I didn't know who or what Anonymous was.
I later learned about them and their history, but I didn't agree with their methods.
I didn't participate in any of the attacks, and I disagree with the DDoS, but someone explained it to me like "we're like protesters sitting in front of a building's entrance, preventing people from entering" so I'm not sure exactly what to think of it.

One thing though that I can say: Sony deserves everything it's getting. "'

Pedantic915464d ago (Edited 5464d ago )

Somehow, i find this really hard to believe.

It doesn't matter how many argument they can make up defending the hackers, the damage has already been done.

squallheart5464d ago (Edited 5464d ago )

He probably meant "own" on his hd >.>

Btw you noticed the guy trying to defend left and right on the comments i mean damn go outside

Shadow Flare5464d ago

"discussing homebrew"

LOL

Yeah. That's what the hackers have given us isn't it

SilverSlug5464d ago

I have not homebrewed anything, but I like the idea. I think Sony should charge $100 dollars for kits, let these guys do the grunt work for apps. Like Android.

Let us have unsupported codec support etc. Since Sony is managing and giving the OK, no Homebrew (sadly) or pirating.

Win/win?

I just want more codec support and maybe stuff like Pandora and Grooveshark.

b_one5464d ago (Edited 5464d ago )

and who would test it? Sony? for free? i dont want to run AV software on a console, im not sure if that software would be safe, there are bunch of freaks wanting to steal or make a zombie out of my box

gamingdroid5464d ago (Edited 5464d ago )

"People are unfortunately confusing homebrew, developers, hackers and crackers."

"And while the gamers shouldn't have lost PSN access for this long, at least now they understand what it feels like to be 'without PSN access...because some giant a**hole decided to force it on you for their own enrichment' and just like the users didn't deserve what happened to them (or their personal information), we didn't deserve losing functionality we paid for either."

People change their tune a lot faster when it actually affects them, otherwise it is somebody else s problem.

Enough said!

Broly is not impressed with the Playstation hacks.

Lord_Sloth5464d ago

These hackers are really pissin me off.

KingPin5464d ago

i know the feeling bro.

we all know the hackers are hacking from a pc right. just wish sony could put a damn virus that wipes clean everything off their pcs when they enter a restricted zone. and gets their exact location. i mean how far away from mommys basement are they gonna run?

i said this before il say it again, why dont these hackers create a console <just chuck pc parts together. cant be that hard>, give free online, free homebrew, no security and sell....no, give it away for free <coz hackers are all for free things>. then work for 3-5 years making a single game and give that away for free too. lets see if they can make a living from this. maybe then they will appreciate the gaming industry a whole lot more.

ps3fanatic5464d ago

Glad to see I am not the only one which has become sick and tired of these hackers. If only we could all get along!

Silly gameAr5464d ago (Edited 5464d ago )

Sony didn't have a problem with homebrew. It's just the people that tried to take advantage and treat the PS3 like it was a full fledged PC. If Sony didn't step in, they would have had another PSP on their hands, and I doubt they wanted that. Maybe some people had homebrew in mind, but we a ll know what the majority wanted from the start.

So glad some gaming websites are giving these hackers a platform to spread their bull though. That's just an awesome idea. /s

Shadow Flare5464d ago

Ironic isn't it

Sony - offers OtherOS for people to make homebrew
Microsoft - offers nothing
Nintendo - offers nothing

Hackers take liberties with OtherOS and try to hack into the ps3

Sony rightly removes OtherOS to stop ps3 becoming another psp

Hackers stop at nothing to hack and disrupt Sony. Even though Sony was the only one to offer something like homebrew to them.

Hackers have no grounds for attacking Sony. What they did is criminal. They stole the root keys and they stole user info. Do us all a favour, take ur crappy crusade elsewhere and gtfo

darkdoom30005464d ago

And now because of hackers, we're unlikely to see other OS in any future consoles.

hackers always ruining it for everyone :(

Max_Dissatisfaction5464d ago

How many people did microsoft sue for hacking the 360? Zero. How many people did nintendo sue for hacking wii? Zero.
It's so easy to make comparisons that paint sony to be the generous good guy when you leave out crucial bits. X360 and Wii got hacked and homebrewed a long time ago, ps3 had otheros so there was no need to hack it. Then SONY removed otherOS and ps3 got hacked as a result. Sony decided to flex their muscles by taking the hackers to court and then they got burnt. They really did stick their junk into the hornets' nest and got what was coming to them, plain and simple

Shadow Flare5464d ago

So Sony was wrong to take to court a thief who unlocked their front door and invited a mass of burglars in to do what they wanted with sonys system?

Hackers. Justifying criminal acts.

I applaud Sony for actually having the guts to do something about these thieves instead of doing nothing. Trying to protect their consumers from all sorts of psn mayhem. But isn't life great, hackers showed their true colours anyway and stole innocent users details and got psn shut down for a month. And they're trying to do it again. Hackers have provided nothing beneficial. And Sony is trying to stop them from doing more damage. Again, how dare they. And to my recollection, Sony did not sue geohot at all. They won their case and he can't hack Sony products ever again. Read: unlock their front door for the thieves

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8520d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele19d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk19d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay19d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10120d ago (Edited 20d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit19d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg19d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10119d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14919d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle32d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit32d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog33d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog33d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad33d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_33d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage33d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda32d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
