PS3 Could Still Finish First When This Gen Finishes

GPT: "Despite the issues Sony has faced recently with PSN, there’s no denying the long-haul capability the Playstation 3 possesses. This is already being proven with the recent news of Nintendo’s next console likely releasing within a year from now even though the Wii released at the same time as the PS3. So is it too farfetched to think that the PS3 could pull of a Super Nintendo? The SNES trailed the SEGA Genesis for most of the 16-bit generation, but when the dust settled, it was the Super Nintendo that ruled the 16-bit sales charts."

PS3 can still win on exclusives alone.

Anyone who counts out the PS3 has no idea what the console is capable of. It is the most advanced console ever created.

DankJemo5477d ago (Edited 5477d ago )

Of course, it's got the most hardware behind it, but there is a lot to consider with Sony, especially in the last six weeks or so... The Wii has long since reached it's "Shelf life" that's why we are hearing stuff about Nintendo's new system (supposedly,) although Sony is really shooting itself in the foot right now, with all the security breaches they have on literally a daily basis it will be very interest to see how that affects their business model, because you can have the most advanced hardware, but if you can't keep it or your users safe that piece of hardware really isn't worth that much.

Focker4205477d ago

I haven't counted out the PS3 once this entire gen. Based on the extremely high sales numbers of the PS2 I'm certain we can expect a similar outcome with the PS3 when the price drops. Many not PS2 numbers but something close.

thats_just_prime5477d ago (Edited 5477d ago )

Next gen starts in 2012 so there is now way ps3 will be in 1st or even 2nd place by then. If you count the next gen when the ps4 comes out then yeah maybe $ony will hold on to their old tech till 2020 just to finish 1st. Oh and the ps3 isnt likely to see another price drop this gen. If it does it only be by like 50 dollars

hiredhelp5477d ago (Edited 5477d ago )

Theyve won already against microsoft. But not sure with nintendo they have alot there own games.

SuperLupe5477d ago

How have they already won against MS since they're still trailing a couple of mullions of units behind and the 360 ?

Why o why5477d ago

Mullions. How many,, jk anyway it matters not to me but thats what happens when you give your nearest competitor almost a year and half headstart. Huffing and puffing isnt quite accurate but ms has definitely put its mark on console gaming. The market is bigger so theres enough space for all to thrive. The playstation3's longevity seems to be bigger than both the wii and 360 so maybe it will end up with the most units sold. We'll see i suppose

Redgehammer5477d ago

Globally The gap is 3.4 million behind the 360. So, although, Sony may have passed MS in your world, it has not in the real world.

gamingdroid5477d ago (Edited 5477d ago )

Won against MS?

Really?

Considering, only MS and Nintendo are the ones to increase both market share and total units sold!

I believe Sony is the only one that hemorrhaged market-share to MS and Nintendo....

hiredhelp5477d ago (Edited 5477d ago )

forget the sales, ansew me this question then
why are more guys on n4g saying they own both systems then. if not selling well cos past couple years that wasnt the case.
everyone was anti sony except the sony buyers. but since the price dropped and more exclusives and free online everybody wants a slice of the action.

im not intrested never have been on console sales. i go by the growth i found of people ive met in playstation home and on n4g to name a few that have had 360's or still have 360's

they have over taken ms by exclusives is what im mainly aiming at. why i stated nintendo do alot of there own games weather by 3rd partys doing for them.

Nintendo does. Outside of a few titles here and there, third parties have slammed the wii and some have just ignored it completely.

So how does nintendo get by? First Party Titles.

Everyone got excited at last years E3 Nintendo 3DS showing, what excited them? First Party Titles.

ThePsychoGamer5477d ago

Sales wise they may be able to pass the 360 in sales by the time Sony releases the PS4, but I think Sony would have to release a 150-200 PS3 model soon and support the console well into the PS4's lifespan to have any chance of beating Nintendo in terms of sales.

news4geeks5477d ago (Edited 5477d ago )

What if the ps3 keeps selling long after the demise of the wii. It's not impossible that the ps3 could sell well over 100million and surpass the wii. Unlikely, but you never know with a $200 ps3.

maxcer5477d ago

by that logic the last(ps2) gen isn't over yet because they still sell the thing.

this generation will be over as soon as the first new console comes out. unless your a fanboy and you decide when the generation ends to suit your needs.

i.e."this gen isn't over until ps3 passes the 360/wii in sales. derp"

news4geeks5477d ago (Edited 5477d ago )

That's just silly. You can't disregard sales because newer technology is out. It still counts as a console in the home and a sale for the company.

You're arguing from the perspective of a fanboy war whereas I'm arguing from the perspective of a business.

ps2 is still selling and those console sales count for sony. If xbox or gamecube were still selling they would count for nintendo and microsoft. You can't disregard a console as a failure and a loss because it sells slowly in the short run but big in the long run. The hardware is finished when the public stop buying it irrespective of what the fanboys think.

Prepare for this gen to be over when project cafe releases. /sarcasm

evrfighter5477d ago

Once a next gen engine title launches...thats it gen over. A good indicator would point to bf3 as it cuts out dx9 entirely. Still yet to be decided until more info is released

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8531d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele31d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk31d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10132d ago (Edited 32d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit31d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg31d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10131d ago (Edited 31d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14931d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle44d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit44d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog45d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog44d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad45d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_44d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage44d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda44d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
