CVG 7 things Microsoft must do to win E3

What Microsoft has to do to make us smile...

The week of E3 is almost upon us and, as usual, we'll all be keeping an especially close eye on the three major platform holders.

We'll also be keeping our pens hovering over our score-cards to determine who we felt came head and shoulder buttons above the rest in terms of wowing us at the L.A convention. It's the biggest stage in the gaming world and a chance to really make a statement about a console's future.

win, win, win... Is this what sites think e3 is all about??
E3 is an exhibition event, not a competition.

Uncharted3Goty5450d ago (Edited 5450d ago )

i agree

but there is Sites that think it is a competition they make it Sony vs Micorosoft VS Nintendo also who has the best games who shows the better stuff and many more.

fluffydelusions5450d ago

Totally agree but at the same time everyone will walk away with a favorite. I think announcing the 720 would be MS's best chance TBH.

ABizzel15450d ago

MS can win, by preparing for E3 2012 right now.

This E3 is all Nintendo and Sony, but that's doesn't mean MS will have a bad E3. I expect them to show off Kinect, announce maybe 2 or 3 retail exclusives for this holiday, Show 3rd party games with exclusive DLC, show some games for early 2012, and show some new features for XBL more than likely SKYPE via Kinect (even though you can probably still use it with your old camera).

They'll have a solid showing, with a good flow to their show. It's just that the biggest news heading into E3 is Project Cafe and NGP, and if MS doesn't show anything to match the hype of those 2 consoles then they can't win, unless Cafe and NGP have a disaster performance which is highly unlikely.

For MS to win E3 they need to get an exclusive GTA game, that doesn't even have to be GTA5 (it could be GTA a spin off sold on XBL), show a brand new Halo, show Alan Wake 2, Show hardcore Kinect games, get FF13 vs. multiplat, get Kingdom Hearts 3 multiplat, and have good showings for Forza 4 and Gears 3. That would help push them into the competition for best show, but will it all happen? I doubt it.

EVILDEAD3605450d ago (Edited 5450d ago )

An E3 win for Microsoft would simply be to satisfy it current consumer base while drawing in millions more for another stellar holiday.

Sony is in competition w/ Nintendo for the handheld space. Nintendo is going to show new hardware (Cafe) and games that won't see the light of day for at least another 14 to 18 months after.

This will obviously Micrsoft's last E3 to show off it's system before 720 is unveiled next year.

Kinect's success was a crucial victory last year for pushing hardware..this year Micrsoft has a great oppotunity to repeat or exceed that success with a great show.

What needs to happen?

The 'known' quantities of Gears 3 and Forza 4 need to have stellar showings

The rumored dark horses that need to steel the show are Kingdoms, Xcom, Star Wars Kinect, Gears of War Exile, Fable Kinect, and Halo: CE HD.

As always it would be in Micrsoft's best interest to share the stage with smoking hot multi-plats like MW3, GT5, Skyrim, Bioshock and the inevitable GT5.

Ultimately Kinect 2.0 needs to blow people away. Dance Central 2 and Kinect Sports 2 are IMO no-brainer reveals..but it's the promise of Project Draco, Steel Batallion, etc. that could tip the scales.

Factor in the annual Xbox Live reveals, Kinect Apps, Kinect Skype, Avatar Kinect, etc. and Micrsoft can clearly come away with one of their best E3's to date.

The ball is in their court..can't wait to see what happens..

I'd like to see a few titles actually.

-Panzer Dragoon Kinect (Project Draco)
-Steel Battalion Kinect
-Rise of Nightmares
-Banjo-Kazooie 3
-Killer Instinct 3
-Conker's Bad Fur Day 2
-Perfect Dark 2
-Forza Motorsport 4's Kinect features
-Skyrim
-New Lionhead game running on their new engine
-New Epic Game running on the new Unreal Engine
-Steam support

All I want from any of the console makers is to announce more content I'm actually interested in playing.

In MS's case, this means less service-based announcements like Facebook or Paypal and more game announcements: exclusives, XBLA stuff, innovative Kinect titles. That kind of thing.

jay25450d ago

The can't 'win'. They haven't got new hardware and any more money to spend steeling PS3 exclusive, early DLC (not that there's going to be a huge lose either).

Max_Dissatisfaction5450d ago (Edited 5450d ago )

They do have Xbox Live and can pretty much guarantee it will be online and fully functional during E3...oh and they've got money, lots.
Oh and how did they "steal" PS3 exclusives if you claim they "paid" for them? Just thinkin out loud here, hoping you can make it all make sense for me

KingSlayer5450d ago (Edited 5450d ago )

Core exclusive games you can play with a controller without Gears or Halo in the name. Waiting for DLC isn't a big deal and I'd rather play my multiplat MP games for free.

GT_Ken5450d ago

They really only need to do ONE thing to win E3. Have working Xbox Live.

femshep5450d ago

working xbox live?.....compared to what sony...oh wait im sorry to soon...they still haven't gotten it up 100% yet....they shouldn't even be in this position

GT_Ken5450d ago

@Femship: LOL! That's what I was saying. It was a bad joke...

But yeah, I don't honestly think anyone but Nintendo can "win" this E3. They have a new console. No one else does. It's really that simple.

5450d ago
Boody-Bandit5450d ago (Edited 5450d ago )

So basically all you need is XBL to work, huh?
I guess you are just going to keep on playing games you already own? No need to purchase any new ones as long as XBL works.

WOW!
The saddest part is you are part of a site writing articles when it's obvious how bias you are. What else is new?

Sorry but I want MS to come with games and a ton of them. Not just games I can get for my other consoles (multiplats) and I sure as hell don't want anything for Kinect. I am hoping, because I actually am a gamer and not a bias little ****, MS has some surprises in store for their "core" audience and E3 2011 is not a repeat of E3 2010.

GT_Ken5450d ago

@Brutally: Dude, I was making a joke about PSN being down for so long. I'm a gamer through and through, and can't wait to see all the amazing new product coming out of E3 next week.

I'm GOING to E3 for that very reason. It was nothing more than an underhanded jab at Sony.

I'm not an MS fanboy, despite what some might tell you...lol. I can't wait to see Uncharted 3, super excited about the new Nintendo console, and I'm pretty stoked about the rumored "core" Kinect games that I might get to see.

Please don't read into my joke as anything more than that.

Boody-Bandit5450d ago

Sorry but I don't find it funny that someone was attacked and people find humor in that. It cost Sony millions if not over a billion and that's not good for the industry as a whole. If you were a gamer through and through you would not have to have that be said to you.

The media beat that horse to death, resuscitated it and killed it again over and over. It stopped being funny a month ago. Just like it's not funny when people bring up RROD. Yeah, we get it. Try talking about something news worthy and not tabloid bullshit. Leave that to the trolls that are not gamers to begin with.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio1d 18h ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing1d 16h ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster921d 17h ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit1d 17h ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing1d 17h ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster921d 15h ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Tanktopmaster921d 15h ago

Let me be clear. This is sarcasm

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay3d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn24d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn23d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown3d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay3d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay3d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac3d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger4d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster30004d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde4d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde3d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_2d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
