Review: Brink (CliffyB3.com)

"Unless a new video game draws out a very positive or negative initial response from me, when it comes to critiquing them, I occasionally have some trouble putting my finger down on my final impressions. It is for this very reason that Brink has proven to be such a challenge: Bethesda and Splash Damage had some truly ambitious, clever ideas wrapped into this class-based FPS, but there are some nagging issues that you need to be aware of if you plan to invest any time into it."

I think the review is pretty honest of the console version, but the game seems much more suited for the PC. Just in target audience and in design.

The review was written after playing the PS3 version.

This game looks really good! I haven't seen a lot of games that interest me out at the moment, but I really like the look of this one!

Been playing this game since day 1 and love it. yes there are some problems but none are gamebreaking or something that cant be worked around with a little effort. Has a very Strong but small community that is growing day by day. I and many plan to be on this all summer so we will all be here (ps3 on my end) to play with for a good while.

I agree, there aren't really any game-breaking flaws, but there are issues that are a pain to deal with and that should have been smoothed over by Splash Damage before the game came out.

I like that Brink has a small community that is growing day by day, but I wish that it had a large online community that was drawn to its solid gameplay, rather than being limited to dedicated players who can tolerate its mediocre aspects to appreciate the deeper stuff.

Basically, I just wish the game had a wider appeal and it wasn't so clunky. The controls really should have been better.

Lol sorry dude i just finally read that review, hahahahahaha what a joke dude, you/whoever wrote it didnt even knwo how to utilize each class in battle, they are just like many of the other reviewers that just didnt fully understand or get the whole concept behind the game. Check out the Splash Damage forums for tips and hints on how to play the game to its fullest. Reviews from people who dont try everythign and every way of playing are way to personal and specific to warrant any kind of respectable opinon on the game as a whole. This review for the most part is just another person who only played the game the way they like to play and made no attempt to distinguish the difference between "this is the way i like to play and the way i want things to be" and "this is what is possible if you like to play these different types of ways and this is what Splash Damage is trying to do to change the way people play"

The game is so deep i doubt the reviewer even got halfway into whats possible and why thigns are the way they are, a majority of the gripes are personal opinion or failure of the reviewer to grasp the idea behind the games functions and not a true represtation of what the game is all about. Pretty much if you want a true review or GOOD extensive info about the game check out the SPlash Damage forums and not all these half assed biased reviews based on not nearly enough game time to fully grasp the game or complaints that could fall under any other game but for some reason they all get a pass while this game gets bashed.

I couldn't disagree more with Oschino1907. While I haven't played the game myself, I have been reading various reviews on the game, and they all seem to come to the same consensus that cbakehorn has. He blatantly stated that the game was very deep and that Splash Damage could have done a lot more with it and probably wanted to as well. He also explained that the game is a different kind of shooter and one that can't be played like Call of Duty or Halo. In fact, he specifically said:

"This may be difficult to understand for Halo and Call of Duty fans that are focused on simply racking up kills. In fact, these players will most likely die more often than the players that seek out their class-specific tasks."

It's clear that he was playing the game it was meant to be played, not "how he wanted to play it". Next time, you should actually read the review, not just skim through it. And stop trolling.

Wow again, my main point is most of the review is looking from a very limited scope, he obviously understands the basics and fact that it is deep but many of his points are solely personal opinion and if you go to the Forums and check out the guides being made (yes its a new game so even those super hardcore gamers are still finding new things) its obvious he hasnt played the game to its full extent yet and has limited time spent exploring in depth the class and body type set ups, maps and playing them all with full teams of humans (which i do daily).
Not going to argue this all day with a bunch a people that have only read other peoples thoughts and havent tried it them selves or done further research. Again check out the forums, plenty of love and hate there but YOU like many others need to get the skinny on this game from those who are really really into it and have much more time actually in the game (then 99% of the reviewers) to give you the good/the bad and the ugly. We all agree the game isnt perfect but it doesnt get its full appreciation and its easy to see why with reviews like this.

@Oschino1907, I stated in the first line of the entire review:

"Unless a new video game draws out a very positive or negative initial response from me, when it comes to critiquing them, I occasionally have some trouble putting my finger down on my final impressions."

What this means, if you look into it with less of your own ideas about the game clouding your judgment, is that I clearly do not have an overwhelmingly positive OR negative opinion about Brink.

That doesn't make it a "limited scope", if anything, the scope is more open than yours: I acknowledge all of Brink's flaws, and believe that gamers should be able to enjoy a title without having to struggle with sloppy fundamentals.

Why should I dumb down my own personal standards concerning the FPS genre simply because Brink is not as sharp as some of the other games out there?

I'm also not going to argue all day: you're entitled to your opinion, and I already said that I'm glad that there is an online community of dedicated Brink players. I have nothing against the game, I just don't think it was as good as it could have been.

All of these opinions were explicitly stated in the review, which has become increasingly obvious to me that you have never actually read.

Also, what's so bad about a 6.3/10? Although the review scale is not defined on the page, a "6" on the site's review scale is considered "Good".
