Sony Sees Smaller Burden From New Handheld Device

Corp.'s chief financial officer said the company doesn't expect the large losses usually associated with the launch of a new videogame device when its hand-held system makes its debut later this year, because it intends to forego expensive development of components.

nooooo i hope that doesnt mean downgrading the system specs !!!

Uncharted3Goty5469d ago

one thing is for sure is that the PS vita will do a great job in selling so he is right theres no Burden at all.

remanutd555469d ago

and how would you know that ? are u a game sales analyst? or just assuming by specs and announced games ? anyways i want 1 desperately !!!

tehpees35469d ago

do you realise the types of games that could be possible if they kept the specs normal all in a handheld. you wouldn't see quality like that on phones

AAACE55469d ago

Vita will be ok, don't worry! It will have good power and will produce fun games. On a hand held you don't need a large amount of power like with home consoles to make games look good. Plus, even if they do downgrade it, it won't be by much.

The only way you'll notice it is if you're looking for it!

Vita will finally have the setup to make a handheld Playstation take off! So there is nothing to worry about really.

death2smoochie5469d ago (Edited 5469d ago )

@tehpees3

You will see that quality on Smart or should I say "Super Phones" in 2012. In August of this year Nvidia releases its Quad Core mobile chipset Tegra 3 that has 4 CPU cores and 12 GPU cores. It's called Kal-El and it will be faster than the chipset inside the Vita and have more processing core. Later in Q3 of 2012 Nvidia then releases an even faster version of Kal-El that has higher clock speeds and more cores. And that's just Nvidia's road map for chipsets...Qualcomm is also working on a Quad Core chipset...and all of these are for Tablets, Cell Phones and Laptops.
ID Software and Epic Games are on Board to bring console style games to run on these chipsets.
So the reality is by the time Vita releases late this year, it will be obsolete by industry standards

.
Personally I also don't want them to downgrade the NGP.

Just like Shuhei Yoshida said "do not believe everything you read on the internet".

Or...

He's telling us not to believe his words either, that maybe NGP would be downgrade, lol.

Anyway, downgrade or not, we would find out on E3 2011.

joeorc5469d ago (Edited 5469d ago )

"nooooo i hope that doesnt mean downgrading the system specs !!! "

example:

"For example, Sony could use chip foundries—chip-making outsourcing companies—thus eliminating the cost of Sony building its own semiconductor factory. It could also buy readily available parts, or turn to contract manufacturers to reduce the up-front investment needed for the product.

Since showcasing the NGP at a media event this year, Sony has remained mum about the device. It has yet to disclose its price or exact launch date. The size of the investment that goes into the product will be a major factor in determining its price.

The NGP won't be as "investment heavy" as past platforms, Mr. Kato said, without detailing specific measures Sony might take.

The hefty costs of developing the PlayStation 3 contributed to four straight years of losses at Sony's game business—until the division finally turned a profit in the fiscal year ended March.

"

what they are talking about is the fact that Sony is using standard Arm Cortex design components. Many in the industry already use, its off the shelf parts. almost "top of the line" off the shelf parts..though/wink.

So the cost upfront is nowhere near as it would have been if they used, cost design components like those that went into the PS3.

the Cell maybe the last non off the shelf component that Sony will use to design, an produce for their Electronics, that go into their game platform's from now on. this onset forward, i would imagine Sony is looking toward Arm core design as a major player for them to have chips for licenced an Sony can reproduce for far cheaper Investment without skipping on Functionality an cost effectiveness but their ROI will be much greater than the Past cost's investment with playstation Platforms.

an example why Sony is taking measures such as this it's cheaper, but also if something like recently happens it will be less of a strain:

example:

Sony forecasts a return to a net profit of ¥80 billion ($989.5 million) this fiscal year following three straight years of losses. Sony would have returned to net profit in the just-ended fiscal year had it not been for the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The disaster made it necessary to write off certain deferred-tax assets, resulting in a hefty ¥259.59 billion net loss for the year.

No. The article described the NGP as being a system that costs less than PS3, which makes sense as the # of flops in the PS3's cell cpu and RSX gpu are very high compared to the NGP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

In fact, what it more than likely means is that Sony will not go out and get smaller nm chip sizes so, those looking to buy an NGP SLIM (or some other model) might need to wait longer than they expect.

Sony, "intends to forego expensive development of components" and since all the components are basically set for the device this means do not expect a lot of different NGP/PSP2 model's like the former.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8523d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk22d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit22d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg22d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10122d ago (Edited 22d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14922d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle35d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit35d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog36d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog36d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad36d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_36d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage36d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda35d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
