Mega Man Legends fans get Slapcom’d

Extra Guy writes: The news that Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype Version has been delayed was probably something of a letdown for fans, but it’s the news that came after they should be really upset about. Apparently Capcom will be using the sales data from this game, whenever it actually does launch, to determine the fate of the full version. No Prototype Version sales, no full release.

Capcom has been inching toward this for a while now, but it appears the dawn of the paid demo is upon us. But the idea that the sales of a demo should be used as a barometer for whether or not a full title should be released is new. Its implications are potentially harmful for the future of smaller projects from larger companies, but is currently an outright slap to the face of Mega Man Legends fans everywhere.

Think of it more as paying for a preview of a game that may never be released. Especially if you complain abut it.

Things would likely make more sense if they had put this "demo" out first, then announced the game without any threat of canceling mid-development.

you can't blame Capcom and it makes sense from the business standpoint. My main problem is, do I feel like forking 250 dollars for a 3DS.

jc485735475d ago (Edited 5475d ago )

It's really hard to teach customers that there is more than just Call of Duty or World of Warcraft. Game companies also don't want to spend too much on promotions. There are also the fans that get unhappy, but you really can't blame the company for becoming the "greedy" as you see now. You out of people should know that Mega Man Legends didn't do sh*t in sales and why is that? 1/2 the people didn't care and the other 1/2 didn't even know it existed until 10 years later. If Capcom won't do the promotion, then "maybe" you can spread the words about this wondrous game you happen to bump into. I'm pretty sure that's how most games gain popularity just with a simple persuasion. How many fans out there seriously? Well, it's not enough. Heck, I remember telling somebody about Devil May Cry series and he was totally oblivious. Take advantage of youtube!

Charging for a demo is messed up, no matter what. But saying "if you don't buy this game twice, you won't get it"? Come on. It looks like Capcom is trying to out-douche Activision.

How 5 game companies do (or don’t) listen to the fans

GamerFitNation: In the age of social media and comments sections, how much influence should popular opinion have on the game industry? Enough influence to make fans want to buy, but while still leaving the developer with their own creative vision.

I’m confident that most big game companies are reading what the fans say, but what knowledge do they consider and what do they do with it? I’m going to take a brief look at five companies, five game franchises, and how they deal with fan feedback.

Yeah, despite Deep Down and anything else which might be considered positive, its well past time that Capcom fans admit that the company hates them.

Resident Evil fans: "Plz Capcom-chan, take Resident Evil back to its roots!"

Capcom's response: "Nope, RE5 got us too much money somehow! MOAR MICHAEL BAY-STYLE ACTION, ZOMBIES WITH GUNS, YOLO!"

Mega Man fans: "Plz Capcom-sama, give us Mega Man Legends 3!"

Capcom's response: "Say what? Keiji left us because we suck ass as a company? We'll get ready to release a demo and then CANCEL DA GAEM LOLOLOL #SWAG"

Square Enix (Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy XIII series)

"Personally, I loathe it and have detested the very idea of its sequels."

"I can’t help but feel that it has wasted this generation..."

Exactly how I feel SE literally waste a whole generation with XIII-1,2,3 & so on... they invest so much time in a game most of us never ask or want to play anyway that's how much they care about what we want & that's why their sales keep on dropping with every new game they make, keep on doing what u r doing for the past years SE & a bankrupt announcement won't take too long to come so start this FFVII remake every1 ask for to have it ready by the time everything go south u know that's the only way to save your @ss.

Square overstepped themselves trying to upgrade production to HD, and either had too much pride to admit such and scale back, or they've yet to realize such as they move forward.

What FF13 became as well as, especially, the sequels was likely the same thing as what happened to the original FF14 which was bad - if any - oversight. Toriyama was given too much freedom, Wada expected too much when they the title went multi, and they tried to make up for mistakes with "redoes". Only the sequels have further ruined Square's credibility.

If I don't get a new F-Zero I'm gonna fly to Japan, learn Japanese, and curse out everyone in Nintendo HQ.

Might wanna do the first two things in reverse...XD

Crapcom has let each and every cherished IP go to hell. Street Fighter still has a team behind it that makes sure it is polished and balanced, though I was never keen on the Focus Attacks in SFIV, mainly because the motivating factor that caused them to implement it. They were doing the same lame thing they did with Capcom vs SNK 2 EO, trying to add some easy function to bring in more casuals. The game is not made for casuals, it's not even the type of game a casual gamer wants to play. So, why ruin it with crap that will just bring the value and hardcore aspect down. Focus Attacks definitely aren't as bad as 'Easy Operation' was, but it's still corny just for the reason they added it.

They outsourced Strider, a classic that doesn't come out to play very often, to the same team that I personally feel ruined Killer Instinct recently. They took a big diarrhea dump all over RE and Megaman. Now the creators of each respectively are making true spiritual successors to the core of what each of those series started out as. The Evil Within should end up being a true survival horror, and Mighty No. 9 a brilliant 2D platform shooter.

If Mighty No. 9 does well, then Crapcom decides to make a Megaman, then they are extreme douchebags. Either way, I'm still not nearly as excited about Deep Down as I was for the initial trailer. Which, by the way, the game doesn't look anywhere near as nice as. The game has amazing lighting, particle fx and the fire is just as good as the trailer basically. Other than that, it's a humongous downgrade. That cavern in the trailer with all the detail and intricate high poly environment was crazy. The game has very flat surfaces though, and all the dungeons basically look the same, just with a shallow overlay of ice or whatever on the brick to make it look like a different dungeon environment. The enemies seem dumb as rocks, and not that interesting. Then, the fact that it's just an isolated dungeon crawler, you just teleport right into a dungeon, it's not an RPG where you go around the open world to towns and forests and find these dungeons. Everyone was hoping it'd be a Dragon's Dogma sequel, instead its a more shallow little f2p game that they are gonna try their best to nickel and dime us on anyways. It's really just a test for their Panta Rhei on PS4 imo, nothing more.

denero14476d ago (Edited 4476d ago )

This is what I intend to happen as soon as Mighty 9 is a hit Capcom will pop up like

"Guess what fan's :) "wink" what you all have been waiting for is coming MegaMANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN"

Ohhh that won't be the jest of it tho they will implement in-game purchases imagine beating a boss getting his transformation then having to pay to upgrade it to it's full strength

wonderfulmonkeyman4477d ago

Microsoft isn't listening to the Rare fans out there.
Nuts&Bolts is proof enough of that.

wonderfulmonkeyman4476d ago

Tried it. Extensively, thanks to my room-mate.
Doesn't live up to the glory of the originals.

‘Mega Man Legends 3’ 8-bit remake on the way

With the help of the ‘Mega Man’ fan community and Capcom's Hideki Ishikawa and Makoto Tomozawa, the long desired and disappointingly canceled “Mega Man Legends 3” will be remade for the Nintendo 3DS.

Just dont cancel it and we are fine. Capcom mostly showed stuff they canceled this gen. They published remember me and canceled megaman. Talk bout stupidity.

kirbyu4701d ago

I'm confused. If this is a fan game, how is it on 3DS?

MoveTheGlow4701d ago (Edited 4701d ago )

Some good business practices, for once. Fan-made games have had a tough time out there on the open Web, with IP hawks chasing them down, putting out cease-and-desists, crappy stuff. Think Danger Mouse's Grey Album (look it up). This is an alternative move, where a company actually shows interest in the project and wants to help and profit from it instead of sequestering the thing in court.

Capcom has started to ally itself with its Megaman fanbase, because they've been making better Megaman games than Capcom has (in that Capcom has made absolutely nothing). I'm sure this was in the works, and Capcom jumped on board and helped out.

The rage from this is obviously the following: Capcom scrapped its own real MML project, which was continuing the 3D idea. The fans then try to make something smaller and 2D out of it, and Capcom co-opts the game, putting it on the system MML3 was supposed to be on, meaning that the original Megaman Legends 3 is now officially forever dead. Forever. And that sucks.

Krew_924701d ago

A lot of people seem displeased with this...

Sakkaku4701d ago (Edited 4701d ago )

Keh, so much support for Megaman Legends and all we get is a freaking 8-bit knockoff of a 3D game.

Bah! I am surprised people aren't more insulted by this.

Of course, I was one of the few people who though the MM9 was a cop-out. Which, don't get me wrong, was a good game but could have been made by any home developer with the license.

nick3094701d ago

Rather have any game than nothing.

contradictory4701d ago

so we have a remake of a game that was never even made.
how the hell does that work?

also this doesn't look too interesting
making megaman legends to 2D just defeats the point of it being megaman legends game at all
it's just beating a dead horse here

and on a sidenote i'm sick of "retro" graphics
games don't benefit from them
it just means you didn't bother with the graphics too much

Mega Man And His Place In The Modern Era

Super PolyPixel - Capcom is a heartbreaker. They tease us with games right before snatching them away from out outstretched fingers. The Mega Man franchise has been hit especially hard, alienating many fans. Each Capcom announcement, we wait eagerly for Mega Man news only to be denied. Capcom has seemed to focus their attention to other games: Resident Evil, Remember Me, Lost Planet 3, their endless supply of HD remakes…and we are left wistful for what could have been.
