Clever program depixelizes old games, makes Mario go soft

If you've played Super Mario Bros. on your $85,000 HD 3DTV, you might have noticed how the game has been looking especially 8-bit as of late. We now have a computer algorithm that can automatically fix that for you, and make Mario look as smooth as a freshly-installed toilet fixture.

Emilio_Estevez5464d ago

That's pretty cool, now someone has to use it.

Pixel_Enemy5464d ago

SNES emulators have been doing this for YEARS..

Statix5464d ago

Yep, all the top emulators have been implementing an optional pixel-smoothing/interpolation filter, such as this one, for many years now. It's nothing new by any means.

ChronoJoe5464d ago

Was about to say, haha.

Some of the snes emulator filters are pretty cool. I'd like to see it on the PSX emulators though. Don't think a similar effect is available on those.

ApexHell5464d ago

actually chronojoe epsxe has a smoothing feature.

ChronoJoe5462d ago

I know, it just didn't seem to be to the extent of this, Metal. This seems to remove all jaggies... but on Epxe polygonal shapes weren't turned into spheres, and curves... regardless of filtering.

Just so you know, this has been established for over five years. Somehow someone thinks this is brand new and it's not.

Kinda looks like someone took a shit on pixels if you think this is really "new". Honestly, prefer the pixelation or super sai until we get further along into technology where technology can actually determine what colors are dominant and understand where exactly lines need to be. Maybe, 40, 50 years?
This algorithm isn't new. In fact, if any of you have emulated, you know this algorithm has been outdone already.
And to top that, I can do this using Photoshop and Illustrator in under 30 seconds. Gaussian blur and live trace--bam. That's it.

EDIT: here are some of the algorithms that have been around for the past several years to scale and depixelize games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
Yes, really, Wikipedia knows better than Kotaku and Dvice, go figure.

I'm not sure why you felt the need to point that out when the article already does.

Speakindatruth5464d ago (Edited 5464d ago )

Just don't understand why it's coming around now. Kotaku just did a cover story getting all over it like it's the next big thing. It's old news.
Besides, the articles coverage of it's "computationally complex[-ity]" makes it sound like it's so much better than it actually is--when really something from a GBA Emulator (check out Super 2xSai scaling) will look ten times better.
EDIT: Here's a link to a comparison of the technologies utilizing hq3x, another scaling algorithm that's been around since the beginning of GBA emulators: http://www.somebits.com/~ne...

Pixel_Enemy5464d ago

I don't know how people are dissagreeing with you.. It is true. Snes emulators have a pixel smoothing option and I also prefer the pixel look. You even posted a link to prove it..

Speakindatruth5464d ago (Edited 5464d ago )

People somehow believe the disagree button is a dislike button. Da truth hurts.

Godmars2905464d ago

Then its a bit frustrating that its been around for five years and they're just now even talking about it, much less talking about using it.

Not that it actually looks all that good.

Rocket Sauce5464d ago

Look at the Doom guy's smoothed out face...yikes...

Tony P5464d ago

It's looks ok in most cases. But some of the games lose a bit of personality, I think, in smoothing all pixels. Invaders in particular.

Five Games I'd Love To See On the Neo Geo AES+

These classics need to make a return.

Blues Journey is the game I'd like to see.

Popsicle15d ago

Pre-ordered mine a few days ago. Love this concept and hope there are more games announced. I can’t justify paying the prices for games that collectors are asking for. It’s the primary reason I own almost every console except the Neo Geo.

Agent7515d ago

I've pre ordered one here in the UK, no games though, as I'll move it on for a higher price. The white model looks awesome, but as expected, the price is too high. We'll probably see more of those all in one cartridges from China containing every AES game. In the UK, AES+ game at £70 ($95) is better than eye watering prices for the originals, but these games are so old and I can honestly say SNK didn't release many classics. The Metal Slug series is the only series I rate, there were just too many Street Fighter clones and not enough scrolling fighting games. Overall, the Neo Geo was poor for all genres apart from one on one fighters. Videos on YouTube asking for games from that console generation to be ported to the AES+, but who'd want to pay £70 for Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2? There's a lot of SNK collections out there, the best being Metal Slug Anthology on the PlayStation 2. The Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on the Switch contains 12 games for around £30, instead of £840 if released on the AES+. For collectors, the AES+ is the best news since sliced bread. Are there enough SNK fans out there? Nowhere near. Those £70 cartridges will soon start creeping up in price and it'll be a re-run of the original console.

I always wanted one in the 90's but couldn't afford it. Now i can but i think if i get one it will be collecting dust fast. It's a nostalgia thing i guess.

Why the Wii is Such a Nostalgic System in 2026

The Wii is now a retro console. Let’s get nostalgic about an often maligned system.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg18d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree18d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai18d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.
