Grading the Gaming Generations

"Each generation of gaming, specifically console gaming, has tried to give us something new. Whether its new graphics or new technology, it really comes down to the games. The games we remember and get all nostalgia-y about and have fond memories of are really what make us look back at these generations with varying opinions. Let’s take a look at them." -Roboawesome.com

My first console was a Nintendo 64, never bought another Nintendo system after that, I grew up, Nintendo didn't. I stuck to my PS1 and PS2 and a bit of Halo on the xbox which I then just played on a pc. The PS2 just had an immense library of games.
I've played about 5 games on the Wii, after I visited my little 11 yr old cousin and my friend's 7yr old kid. They found those games fun for a bit, and I just got a headache from how horrible and rushed those games felt, not even Mario Kart played the same. Hit that disagree button all you want, Nintendo has fallen downhill in quality imo,

i wont hit the disagree button but i will respectively disagree. For me i think the quality is at an all time high for nintendo. They have put together some great games that i never would have imagined for wii. galaxy series, metroid prime trilogy, sin and punishment, kirbys epic yarn and so on. i wish they would stay on a roll and regularly release games but they dont.

even nintendos quality on the ds is immense. just my opinion though.

in regards to galaxy(I'm guessing mario) that's a pretty good game and I agree with it being a great step further. Metroid was also good, however, after those select few games(heck include zelda) I see nothing but wii resorts, wii sports, and a bunch of other party games and dance games. It seems the only thing you can get out of them is another mario game, while other consoles have incredible lineups with variety in genre and great online networks. I see where you are coming from though, but I just can't seem to wrap my head around a system that offers poor network service and overwhelming amounts of casual games.

More times then not your favorite system is the one you grew up with!

Being a "big boy" is so overrated. It's much more funner to not care what are known as "kid games" - whatever takes away the stress from work is fun to me. That's why I still love my nintendi and always will :)

my favorite generation of gaming was the nes/master system.

going from pole posistion on the 2600 too out run on the sms was simply amazing to me.

Having started out in the pong/2600 days, the 16bit times were the best for me. I would grade them as such:

4bit (or whatever they were called): C
8bit: C
16bit: A-
32bit: B
64bit: C+
128bit: B+
256bit: B

They seem to miss the real first console War:

Atari 2600 vs. Intellivison
The Intellivison was my first console system.

I didnt start gaming till the NES, So I based it on my experiences.

thebudgetgamer5494d ago (Edited 5494d ago )

i don't like the fact that you didn't mention the sega master system while it was blown out in sales, it was a stronger console.

good article aside from that.

RoboSpiff5494d ago (Edited 5494d ago )

Again, based on my experience back then, I didnt have one at the time of NES so i couldn't compare. I eventually did get one and played the heck out of R-type on it,

But i appreciate the kind words :)

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
