IGN: Nintendo 3DS: The Failed Launch

IGN: The 3DS launch was something of a catastrophe. What made it quite so bad? And can Nintendo make up for it in the future?

I must admit, they did botch the launch pretty bad. Not a single first party title worth purchasing.

I don't see why people haven't caught on to this by now. The same thing happened to the Wii, to the original DS, to the Gamecube, to the GBA, and to the N64.

99% of the time the best games on Nintendo platforms are first party games based on their established franchises. The problem is that those games only release every 2 - 3 years some even longer (Zelda, Smash Bros.). Those who buy Nintendo consoles day 1 NEVER have a ton of things to play, because it takes too long for them to release the games you want. Now the games are coming for the 3DS and soon, but having to wait at least 5 months for 1 good game (excluding Street Fighter) sucks for Day 1 buyers.

I also think many core gamers don't like the low battery life of the system, and are waiting for the 3DS lite to improve this. I am one of those people.

Finally I think naming it 3DS, and designing after a DS allowed room for uneducated parents to tell their kids no. When they ask what's the difference between a 3DS and the original DS and the store clerk says it has a #D screen, and plays the new 3DS games, parents are going to pass. $250 was too much for it, especially when they are still buying the DS Lite for $99.

Nintendo needs to bring out the games, develop new franchises, drop the price to $199, and releases a 3DS Lite with a better battery life as soon as possible so the core gamers can pick it up, and once the price trickles down to casual range, they'll pick it up as well. Once again I think the 3DS will sell a lot, but I don't think it's going to sell as well as the original DS.

Also hurts your eyes when you play

I play for 1-2 hours on SSF4 even tho it says to do like 30min or somethin and I get no headaches, it obviously goes from person to person.

Fail Launch, maybe, but come Christmas there will be a big list of games to choose from, thats when it will take off. Don't forget the DS wasn't a huge boom right off the bat either, now it's in everyones hands.

Failed launch, sure. If anyone thinks Nintendo's losing a bit of sleep over the 3DS launch, they're out of their gourds. Sure, they launched below their sales figures. Whatever. They knew their launch lineup wasn't good - I'm not sure why they started so early, but they all know that once the first Mario title appears, the thing will print money again. In 3D.

Personally, I can't wait until developers get in gear (or Nintendo lets them get in gear), because I'm sure we'll see a triumphant return to old-school form from my favorite publisher at the moment, Atlus, plus some new title from Team Meat (not for everyone, sure, but Super Meat Boy's one of my favorites), and that Kid Icarus game that looks much like one of my favorite franchises, Sin and Punishment.

The writers are delusional if they think the Big N needs to "make it up" to anyone; people purchased the thing knowing full well that Nintendo would soon milk their franchises again, and the fans would all benefit in some way.

Give it time. I do however am a bit surprised it didn't sell like hot cakes as i thought it would sofar.

stealth500k5462d ago

if you thought it would you obviously have no understanding of the game industry and launches

The 3DS is good, I'm pretty sure it'll do it great for the next years... but, at this time, I dont see many games I want to buy. Maybe SF IV, but that's all.

Best 2D, Mario World, best 3D, Mario 64. Can't say there's been a bad one, although Mario World 2 wasn't a true sequel. The Mario Land games were good (not the first one) and also Wario Land. I thought after Mario 64, Mario 3D World was excellent.
