Are these types of games dying? Are JRPGs drying up in the Western world where a newer breed of RPG franchises such as Mass Effect, Fallout and Elder Scrolls dominate the blogs and the charts?
Sarcastic Gamer examines the features that are unique to this genre and you must give a verdict in the end.

Square Enix launches Final Fantasy X 25th anniversary site, revealing new Nomura art, books, music releases, and merchandise.
Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.
They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

FuRyu revealed on Friday its Exstetra fantasy role-playing game is getting an HD remaster that will launch this summer on Steam.

A brutal reset, a smarter story, and a return to what made it great—Mortal Kombat (2011) revived the series.
15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
they aren't dying but just haven't evolved much
Well they used to be king back in the 80's and 90's
I mean Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FFVI, FVII, earthound etc etc are considered some of the best RPG's around, CT in particular is possibly the best RPG ever
I also loved Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia and Draogn Quest 8
but it seems the transition into 3D hasnt been kind. I just find them a bit weird now , maybe a bit too anime and too much techno babble and angst-ridden, emo protagonists.
IMO ever since KOTOR (not baldurs gate or diablo) was when the WRPG has started to take over, that was when I started to consider WRPG's better as they brought a more cinematic vision to this genre
I would not like the genre to dye, just evolve. Keep the setting, the characters, magic and weapons. Just make the worlds a bit more open, some adult focused stores and don't use turn based fighting in every game. I am sure they can keep doing what they have been for the last 30 years and they will still find people to buy and love the games. But, if they want to lead the market, they have to evolve and bring some excitement to the genre.
No, FF13 is a great game, Valkarie Chronicles is a great game, etc...
JRPGs are not as popular and like NYC_gamer said" just haven't evolved much."
1) Theres about 3 times the jrpgs in development than wrpgs at any given time
2) theres more jrpgs on different systems than last gen.
So no
Development costs suck. So its more cost effective to do them on portables.
I dont see a are wrpgs dying article because there are none on potables and only 2 companies seem to be able to do them right
Less hate please and more love for both varieties.
