Are JRPGs Dying?

Are these types of games dying? Are JRPGs drying up in the Western world where a newer breed of RPG franchises such as Mass Effect, Fallout and Elder Scrolls dominate the blogs and the charts?

Sarcastic Gamer examines the features that are unique to this genre and you must give a verdict in the end.

they aren't dying but just haven't evolved much

"they aren't dying but just haven't evolved much"
Thank god, cause i don't really like WRPGs that much.

longcat5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

they've been overshadowed a bit by WRPGs that have better tech and are usually simpler (more approachable)

they have moved to handhelds where dev costs and expectations are lower

It just so happened that JAPANESE consoles like the SNES, PS & PS2 were the dominant platform in the last two generations

that happened to be the platforms of choice for hundreds of Japanese RPG developers

in a time when Japanese anime and manga was booming in the West.

So due to high demand these anime/manga inspired JRPGs were demanded by westerners to be translated to western language & were selling like crazy before.

Yeah shooters, action and casual games are the new kids on the block but JRPGs are not dying. The PS3, Wii, PSP and the DS are living proof that they are not endangered.

Pokemon, Final Fantasy, Dragon's Quest, Monster Hunter, Demon's Souls, swarms Eastern MMO RPGs are proof they are alive and kicking butt!

The western media just wants western public to believe this to give way to western developed games. This is unethical, biased, unfair & irresponsible journalism.

There should be equal treatment of both Western & Eastern games altogether to promote GOOD competition & the BEST quality games particularly in the RPG genre.

Jrpg's are not as popular as they once were last gen with the PS2 and they're has only been a few jrpgs on HD Consoles that sold a million along getting solid reviews. I think it's mostly due to Japanese Publishers just ignoring the genre and focusing on more popular genres like Shooters, fighters, Action adventure etc.

NukaCola5488d ago

Kingdom Herts III
Chrono Trigger 2
Pokemon MMO
Final Fantasy VII HD

This is the worst part. There are games that millions want which would be easy cash and at the same time reignite the passionate flame of the JRPG, but they won't even make those. Just crappy sterotypical games, same emo kids...saving the world...drinking green juice...sailing on their floating ship. If you won't make something fresh and original just make one of the games requested above.

VampiricDragon_5488d ago

@ nuka cola

yeah and single player mid evil action rpgs are so original right?

And when is an rpg not about saving the world in some way?

Reibooi5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

I would say they are not dying and they HAVE evolved plenty but people still ignore and talk down on them.

Perfect examples of this are the Persona games, Valkyria Chronicles, The World Ends With You and so on and so forth. For some reason every time a JRPG does something really new and awesome no one buys it but continues to complain that all J-RPGs are the same old thing. If no one buys the ones doing something new why would other companies take those same risks(or different risks for that matter?

iamtehpwn5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

Classic JRPG's are still better than anything That Western RPG's have to offer...problem is, they haven't transitioned well (at all) to next gen.

Play a PSX RPG.. FF7-9, Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve, etc... if you can get past the graphics, the gameplay experiences, are the greatest Role playing experiences you can find.

and thats not even a third of them.

Arknight5488d ago

I'm all for more JRPGs. The problem with the majority of these titles is that they just won't have the impact of the Epic games of the 90s.

None of those titles is the next Chrono Trigger.

stealth500k5488d ago

@arknight

and why does it have to be?

the next crono trigger was radiant historia. A brilliant atlus game on the ds.

Vherostar5488d ago

No its nothing to do with evolution the problem is people goto the same devs and same series for there fix instead of looking elsewhere. Some of the best JRPG's this gen are not final fantasy or nippon ichi 2 names that used to dominate the ps2 era. I do think they have dried up though outside Japan as a lot of JRPG's never see the light of day outside of Japan on the PS3.

the_kutaragi_baka5488d ago

They're only dying on console since dev costs are too much for the genre and Japanese studios aren't as major as western ones on average to afford it.

Well they used to be king back in the 80's and 90's
I mean Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FFVI, FVII, earthound etc etc are considered some of the best RPG's around, CT in particular is possibly the best RPG ever

I also loved Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia and Draogn Quest 8
but it seems the transition into 3D hasnt been kind. I just find them a bit weird now , maybe a bit too anime and too much techno babble and angst-ridden, emo protagonists.

IMO ever since KOTOR (not baldurs gate or diablo) was when the WRPG has started to take over, that was when I started to consider WRPG's better as they brought a more cinematic vision to this genre

Bigpappy5488d ago

I would not like the genre to dye, just evolve. Keep the setting, the characters, magic and weapons. Just make the worlds a bit more open, some adult focused stores and don't use turn based fighting in every game. I am sure they can keep doing what they have been for the last 30 years and they will still find people to buy and love the games. But, if they want to lead the market, they have to evolve and bring some excitement to the genre.

Vherostar5488d ago

I prefer them to go back to basics forget fancy graphics and concentrate on a ton of content and a great story not to mention a familiar battle system too many games have been completely ruined by a crappy flawed battle system. Suikoden needs a re-boot and I would love to see a new Suikoden game on PS3.

theonlylolking5488d ago

No, FF13 is a great game, Valkarie Chronicles is a great game, etc...

JRPGs are not as popular and like NYC_gamer said" just haven't evolved much."

stealth500k5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

1) Theres about 3 times the jrpgs in development than wrpgs at any given time

2) theres more jrpgs on different systems than last gen.

So no

Development costs suck. So its more cost effective to do them on portables.

I dont see a are wrpgs dying article because there are none on potables and only 2 companies seem to be able to do them right

Less hate please and more love for both varieties.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle27d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
