Sony's PSN compensation: is it enough?

VideoGamer.com writes: "Sony's 25 days of PlayStation Network downtime, a result of an external intrusion which led to the loss of the private information of over 70 million users, is one of the biggest news stories of 2011. The platform holder realised a long time ago it would be impossible to just restore the service and sweep the issue under the rug, instead launching a firm and total admission of guilt, which included the apologetic bowing of many of the company's chief executives at a Tokyo press conference."

To be totally honest, they could have offered nothing and I wouldn't have cared. Technically they don't owe you anything since it is a free service. It's almost the equivalent to arguing that microsft owe you because you can't play your new game online unless you give them more money to do so. Then again I haven't been on PSN since the christmas holidays so it's no wonder I don't care.

dangert125485d ago

Some people are getting two free ps3 games i am getting one, i really don't like that what kind of apolgy is it when you offer people things they already have and they got from joining your special members club that they had to pay to get access to?

midgard2275485d ago (Edited 5485d ago )

its not sonys fault you buy so many good games, besides easier for them to give away first party games than 3rd party since its thier profit not another company's

besides I remember whenxbox live went down they only gave some garbage aquarium game or somethin no one would ever play so stop whining :)

trust me, there are many who dont have those games.

Edit @ DrFUD

I understand what you mean man, One prob even if sony released something thats not on psn for free, you would probably own that anyway. If they would release killzone, resistance, Ratchet, uncharted Most people would have those anyway. Sony makes quality games and on top of that they are giving away Great AAA games, prob with that is people mostly buy AAA games, but what can you do? rather them offer your something lame like eye of judgement for free? so no one would play it?

DrFUD5485d ago

midgard, it's nobody's fault we buy games, but obviously people do and therefore to "please" everyone which Sony claims is impossible they should have given a NEW game that nobody on PSN has thus making any "I already have that game" arguement irrelevant.

dangert125485d ago

@midgard

i got lbp free for signing up on ps+
i got wipeout for the first months ps+ psn title
those two where given to me by sony for being a plus member

imfamous was discounted on plus

ratchet and clank is the only i actually brought not ps+ influenced and you blame me not sony? ok =/

thugbob5485d ago (Edited 5485d ago )

dangert12 did you read the article?

What the hell do you want Sony to offer?

No matter what games they offer for free there will always be people who already bought the game. Can you get that through your head?

PSN is free sony should not even give anything away. PSN+ subcribers should be happy with 60 days free.

You have to stop thinking selfishly. You're mad that you are only getting one game, but if all the games sony offered were games that you didn't have you'd have no problem with it right? While others cry that they already have those games. You have to look at things from multiple perspectives.

Danielmccue5485d ago

I pay for PS+ the may update is 17 days late.

If they hadn't offered anything i would of been annoyed.

Mr_cheese5485d ago

Nah mate, its a silly reason. You still got to play all the games you previously got, which is the plus to PS+ and you still complain? They gave an extra 30days on top of the time taken from the users. That would have been satisfying. I think your greedy.

Christopher5485d ago

Actually, Mr_cheese, they are giving +60 days on top of the time it was down added to your current PS+ subscription. Two months free.

Mr_cheese5485d ago

@cgoodno

That still validates my point. How can people complain over that? Some people just want more and more, no need.

Drac5485d ago

It's to do with the what about me generation, they expect stuff for free all the time, doesn't matter that they didn't pay for the service.

The free games are for the free service being down not PS+, that's what the free 60 days is for.

And like so many I've got most of the games they're offering, but I did get a lot of enjoyment out of them, and it might be nice to see some others on Dead Nation.

Danielmccue5485d ago

@MR cheese

I never said i was annoyed at it i said IF they hadn't offered anything i would of been annoyed.

I agree this is above and beyond what I would've thought they would do.

JokesOnYou5485d ago (Edited 5485d ago )

lol, there aren't 77mil unique users of ps3, there are so many people with 2+ accounts its ridiculous, oh and btw yes psn is free but as a owner YES compensation is owed whenever service is NOT available for a long duration of time because that is why SOME people chose ps3= knowing they CAN game online for free, I mean if I buy a product that has a free service as a feature, like a computer with cloud service or insurance with free rental service and suddenly I can't use it, then of course I feel entitled to compensation, thats EXACTLY why sony is doing this for GOODWILL of their customers.

At any rate this whole "compensation" ordeal could have been solved by a really simple solution: give psn users several "optional" welcome back packages, let them choose from a wide variety of "old" 1st party games, or have them apply by way of 1 per console for some discounts on the psn store, new release etc....so no matter what everybody can feel like sony is actually trying to compensate ALL psn users. Instead sony intentionaly chose specific games that they already knew a significant portion of their fanbase already has= very limited compensation. Also I don't think many will continue to pay for ps+ to keep content since most ps3 users are reluctant to pay for online and if they do, thats a win for sony. In the end I guess its just smart business descision on sonys part, make the "offer" of goodwill to everyone, but limit the amount compensation to very few.

The_Con-Sept5484d ago

Beggars can't be choosers. Like everyone keeps saying: Sony's EULA states that they are not obligated to give you anything yet they are. If you bought all of the games in the list then don't be mad. "WAH WAH WAH I WANT MORE MORE MORE!"

**** the people on XBOX Live didn't even get a choice on their compensation. They all received the same game. People who already owned it got their money back. SO WHAT. It was one game, not two and definitely NOT from a choice. Sony gives you a choice and you are just mad. Why not sell the copies of the two best games you own on that list and keep the downloaded version? Give the gift of games to someone else who is less fortunate.

Or just pout.

More than enough, shit happens...didn't think we would get free games for said shit happening

iamnsuperman5485d ago (Edited 5485d ago )

These articles are getting as frequent as the PS3 is doomed....Right the PSN compensation is enough. Giving us money is ridiculous and especially with 77million members. The games they offer are good. Infamous, LBP are good games. I have all the games and I am more than happy with what they offer. As a PSN+ subscriber my main concern is that my month out is reimbursed as in the subscription is extended by that month. The rest is just extra. Like Sony said they cannot please everyone

just_sayin5485d ago

I know right Sony shouldn't have given us anything. Then we all would be in the same boat with NOTHING.

DrFUD5485d ago

well said.
Add me to the I get nothing list.

MoDyDo5485d ago

It's more than enough, I mean the only users who should have been awarded are psn+ plus users, cuz they paid for something, but instead they offered all of this for evreyone, and as you said, giving money is really ridicules. I think we really should be greatfull.

elbeasto865485d ago

Yep. More than enough. I'll finally get Dead Nation and play some Killzone Liberation and Pursuit Force on PSP.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8526d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele25d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk25d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay25d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10126d ago (Edited 26d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit25d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg25d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10125d ago (Edited 25d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14925d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle38d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit38d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog39d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog39d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad39d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_39d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage39d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda38d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
