It Seems Sony’s Welcome Back Pack Doesn’t Suit Everyone

Why Sony can't please everyone.

You can't please everyone. They are humans, that's our nature. Win some lose some, I say.

NewZealander5493d ago

well im happy, the only game on the list that i own is infamous, so i just have to decide what i want from the games available, i def want LBP. then its a toss up between quest for booty and wipeout.

Mr_Bun5493d ago

The "welcome back" package only seems to benefit those who don't buy games. I suppose Sony didn't have to give anything away, but people like myself who have supported Sony seem to be getting the shaft.

I have all 5 PS3 games so the only thing that applies to me is the extended PS+ service, which they owe me since I was paying for a service that I was unable to take advantage of.

sikbeta5493d ago

"Posted on 16 May, 2011 at 10:25 pm by Nick Caplin:

I’m really sorry that there is nothing there that you want. We’ve tried really hard to put together a list of high quality BD games, rather than simply offering cheaper PSN titles. The average metacritic rating for these games is over 84%, so these are high quality games. Unfortunately with a user base of 77m people, it is really hard to offer something for everyone."

This pretty much explains it all...

ConanOBrien5493d ago (Edited 5493d ago )

It's conclusive that the majority of Sony fans have something in common: a cronic exclusivity-disorder....simila r to babies who need more exclusive attention. So cute indeed.,aww

JackBNimble5493d ago (Edited 5493d ago )

@MR_Bun
I am going to give you the courtesy of explaining why I gave you a disagree.

I disagree with your first paragraph, your comment is pretty generalized. Just because someone may not own these games already dosen't mean they do not buy games or support sony.

I personally don't own any of these games, but I have put in over $3500 in games and DLC, aswell as 2 ps3, 5 controllers and PS-move.

Believe me , I understand what you're saying, but it wouldn't matter what 5 games sony gives out because there is always going to be someone who owns them all.

NegativeCreepWA5493d ago

I have or had every game on the list at some point and doesn't really bother me. Maybe I can get a few of my friends on Dead Nation now.

taylork375493d ago

I am not thrilled because 2 of these games are on a different level than the other 4. Infamous and LBP. I own these 2, so I get to pick from a 3-4 hour mini game in Quest for Booty, 2 downloadable games and an average game in Dead Nation.

I know PSN is free and technically they don't owe me anything, but if you are going to act like you really do care by giving us free games I feel like there could be a more consistent list.

LunaticBrandon5493d ago

@sikbeta

I have three accounts myself. There is no way there are anywhere near 77 million unique users.

Quagmire5493d ago

Def Wipeout. I would recommend you rent out Quest for Booty, its only a 3-4 hours game max.

Mr_Bun5493d ago

@Jack

You are telling me that you have spent over 3500$ in PS3 software yet don't own any of the 5 free games offered?

Either you are lying or you have been going out of your way to avoid Sony's popular 1st party software

XRider5493d ago

It kinda pisses me off because Sony's is giving me shit I already own.

Peaceful_Jelly5493d ago

the thing is that all of those games were released years ago so it's only that natural that most people already have them. And that's the root of the problem... Old games.

Prototype5493d ago

People need to realize whining and bickering is only gonna make the situation worse. Sony doesn't HAVE to do s-it; they're doing this to basically say "thanks for being patient and loyal" yet you have a lot of people still complaining because they "own" the games already. I'm almost to the point some of the people complaining are fanboys in disguise just to stir s-it up.

I understand there's those few who feel they want something for what happend, and I'm willing to take advantage of the free games as well - however I'm not gonna complain about something they didn't have to do.

AngryTypingGuy5492d ago

Why Sony can't please everyone: Because gamers are whiny little babies.

Sony has been providing a FREE service for YEARS to its customers. It gets hacked and goes down, and all of a sudden Sony owes the world to everyone. Then they offer multiple free games on top of other perks and it's still not good enough? I rest my case.

CameronL995492d ago

Clearly a pile of nonsense from an unemployed self entitled blogger who knows F all about doing business. Stop whining you little shits, you didn't lose anything you paid for, you don't deserve money back that you never spent, you stupid shits.

starchild5492d ago

I'm not a Sony fanatic or anything, but I do enjoy my PS3. All I can say is that many gamers act like entitled little brats. Never happy.

Sony have done right by their customers and all they get back is grief.

slapedurmomsace5492d ago (Edited 5492d ago )

@Angry typing guy..what you failed to realize and most people here seem to have failed to realize is..my email account, my password, possiibly my PSN account, home address, and most important my credit card information was all stolen, and the best part is so was yours, (unless of course you're 14 and using your parents info) How this aspect has been swept under the rug on this website is maddening, and furthermore..it took Sony a freaking week to tell anyone this "minor" after thought that all this info had been in hackers hands for that past week.

Apone5492d ago

I'm happy the PSN is back. That's enough for me. Probably will get Dead Nation. A free extra month of plus is an obligation and more than normal. (for a lost month). Let's hope it's safe enough this time. Don't feel the need to get a new credit card again... ;)

MaxXAttaxX5492d ago

I'd say "I don't owe you shit!" and take away all the free stuff.
Is that better!?

People need to stop bitching.

StanSmith5492d ago

Some people here need to really wake up!

It was Sony who didn't properly encrypt our data. It was Sony who put our identities at risk. It was Sony beating their chests, taunting the hackers saying they hadn't been hacked!

So please do tell me how you people seem to think "Sony don't owe us anything"?

No one here will dispute that Sony was a victim here, but the facts are they dragged their customers into this too because they were too relaxed on their security.

This isn't about people whining, this is about PS3 gamers being treated all equally. How is it fair that the people who did buy these games, recieve less of a goodwill gesture from Sony than those who didn't? We all lost use of the network and we all had our details lost because Sony didn't care about your own personal details.

Sorry but Sony screwed up here. Those games were selected on the basis that their sales have dropped and Sony wouldn't take a big hit in their own pockets. I keep seeing certain people calling those who complain about owning them all "greedy" but the only people being greedy here are Sony themselves.

ChrisW5492d ago

Honestly, Sony could have given us nothing... But since they did, as the old saying goes, "Beggars can't be choosers."

Except Sony is nice enough to give you a choice.

GrieverSoul5493d ago (Edited 5493d ago )

Even God can't please everybody.

To me, the games are worthless because I have them all already. Still, its a nice offer to those who dont have them. But this raises a question, am I being compensated? Im a Plus member.

Sitris5493d ago

If your an existing plus member we get 60 days added to plus, granted we lost 22+ days on our current but at least it is an extension. But I am with you, I have all those games and am a paying member, and I get nothing from the welcome back package, I'm not really angry though, I might pay for plus, but the PSN is still a free service.

gcolley5492d ago

who's god? my god pleases everyone. hey if it's worth doing it's worth overdoing

opoikl5493d ago

I still believe they could have thrown some psone games in the mix, and at least the option to choose between lbp and the (combined) DLC for that game.

As I stated before, I would gladly take 1 costume over 5 games I already own.

But I'm in no position to complain, since the 60 days of Plus means I'll probably get the Uncharted 3 Beta.

Clarence5493d ago

I'm just glad the PSN is back online.

Areeb115493d ago

I'm not sure people realise this... but if you have all of the games in the package... why don't you just sell the hardcopies to make a profit and download the free version of PSN. That way you get store credit to get more games. games of your choice.

AyeGee5492d ago

Bubbles for a good idea.

Nevers5492d ago

Indeed. At this point Sony won't be able to please everyone. They can only do what they can and hope the community forgives.

Personally, I dislike the perps who broke through Sony's security more than I am displeased with Sony. They are a victim here too. Unfortunately, all of us users are also victims. Our trust was compromised. Knowledge of this was kept from us for too long. Whether that was due to stupidity, ignorance, hubris, greed, or a mix of all of them... we may never recieve a satisfying answer.

I'm glad that they are giving away games (essentially). I'd still like to get an email regarding my credit monitoring though. I expected something regarding credit monitoring sooner and as time goes by, I'm losing my patience w/ Sony about that aspect. They screwed the pooch and they will be paying for this credit service.

Specifically regarding the selection... well, different strokes for different folks. Being someone who essentially only uses my PS3 for must have exclusives that I'm interested in and BR... I don't have any of those games. None. They never interested me enough to fork over the cash. I'm aware that's a crime to some of the more vocal console war mongering whiners (yes, they're on all sides). But I refuse to ever let that ilk open my wallet for me. Anyway...

My choices be:
~PS3~
InFamous
LBP

~PSP~
Maybe LBP but would rather keep the space for something I know I'm interested in.

That's my 2cents.

mastiffchild5492d ago

IDK how many people bought the least successful(in sales terms) of the free games but lets say, for arguments sake that it was Dead Nation(as I imagine it was)and it solda around 200,000 copies. That would mean out of maybe 45million PS3 owners only a teeny -tiny percentage own it and therefore owned the possibility of owning ALL the games on offer. As the number of people moaning on various sites seema to be more than 1/10 you'd thinkthat at least 450,000(at least) owned all five games and even IF all the games sold that much the chances of everyone who bought the lowest selling one owning ALL the others is VERY slim indeed. Simply the number of people suggested by the moaning to havw all the games is complete bunkum. I can accept a fair few people on a site like this have all the games(by a fluke I have allthe PS Ptitles and don't even buy that many PSPgames but they're a pretty high profile bunch whereas the PS3 selection is more across the board.

I'm not calling anyone a lair individually but I'm certain tons of people have lied about this issue. TONS and tons of them as the number of complaints about it s totally disproportionate with the number of people who it'seven POSSIBLE to own all the games let alone what the real figure for that is(I would think less than 1/100 PSN users own them all and in that case Sony chose pretty well). Seriously, they oe us sod all and we're definitely(in some cases) making things up so we can moan at them. Think about it-even if every LBP owner had all the games it would still only be about 4million out of 45million-a small minority again and the fact is it's going to be way,way smaller than that.If you do have all the games count yourself a little unlucky and do what I'm doing with the PSP and get downloads of LBP and inFAMOUS(im doing LBP and MNR on PSP)and sell your disc copies to make a few bucks so you'll get something if you're bothered about it.

I'd be shocked if the real number of people owning every PS3 game on offer was above 150,000. Seriously.

bradgrenz5492d ago

Oh, yeah. Based on Dead Nation alone we can say very confidently that the number of people who own every game on the list are a fraction of a fraction of 1% of PS3 owners. This offer basically covers 99.9% of users with free games, and 100% with the free PS Plus, including discounts for purchases, and the free movie rentals Sony is also offering.

Eddie201015492d ago (Edited 5492d ago )

I own all 5 of the PS3 games offered and one of the PSP games offered, I'm a little disappointed that I won't have new games to download for the PS3 but I do understand that it would have been impossible to please everyone and all five of the PS3 games on offer are great. Those people that can pick two games from the list of PS3 games are very lucky and should be very happy, those of us that already own them all, well thats just the luck of the draw.

I think Sony has done a great job with their Welcome Back Program, much better than any other company would have done.

Sony has always shown great appreciation for their customers over the years, I have recieved many things from them, like two T-shirts, a baseball cap, Many demo disk, posters, cellphone charm, discount coupons, a journal/game case and pen, and calenders.

Maybe thats why Sony gamers are so loyal.

wsoutlaw875492d ago (Edited 5492d ago )

hey im happy, I never got dead nation and was just about to finally buy Infamous like last week. im a plus member so i get an extra 60 days making my subscription 17 months with all the bonus time. We'll see what movies they pick for the free rentals too.
I cant wait too see whats going to be on, what should be, a huge plus update. The author brings up warhawk but, maybe its on plus, maybe a discount.

jessupj5492d ago

I'm embarrased that so many of my fellow sony fans are bitching about getting free stuff.

It's hard to be pleased if you already own the games on the list.

Instead of giving two free games from a small set list - I'd have preferred one free game from a much bigger list.

gaden_malak5493d ago

I'm trading my hard copy of games I already own and re-downloading them for free.

JackBNimble5493d ago

gaden_malak is onto something, lucky for me I don't own any of them. Either way you look at it, this is a pretty big package but I am just glad that the psn is back.

Joni-Ice5493d ago

NOW THATS SMART GADEN_MALAK

Max Power5493d ago

Don't expect all if any of your saves to transfer.

wsoutlaw875492d ago

Ya, good idea. Find the one thats worth the most and trade in and re download it. However, since potentially every person on the psn will own it, im not sure how much it will sell for then, so do it now.

gaden_malak5492d ago

I already traded LBP and Infamous for LA Noire, which comes out tomorrow here.

iamnsuperman5493d ago

Of course the can't. pleasing everyone is ridiculous. I have all the games but still i think they have offered some good games. Shame no FPS was offered but still they have offered some good games. With infamous 2 round the corner Infamous was a logical step. Everyone needs to stop whining about it. I am surprised in what they offered

TheMrMadzen5493d ago

Dunno why I have never bothered buying Infamous, but it seemed it has paid off :D Bye bye stupid trial-only trophies!! :)

TheTruth895493d ago

It doesn't fit me too...

but you can't suite 77m users

Joe29115493d ago (Edited 5493d ago )

The point is correct, but 77m users? Really. There are about 52m PS3s sold (as far as I know), I have individually bought 3 myself (1 broke, got one for term time home and out of term time home). I have 4 accounts so I think your looking at 20-30 million people to please and some of these might not even use PSN.

The Truth should be more accurate.

Edit: @ below: I see your point, but I still don't think it would be anywhere near to 77m, it would be interesting to see the number of individual users of PSN, although only people that have that kinda data would be Sony themselves.

mastiffchild5493d ago

But then you have my house where there's two people on my account(me and the missus) and three on the kids. I doubt there's anywhere near 77million people but I sure think it'll be a lot more than you think too. There will be a lot of homes with fewer PS3 accounts than there are people who use the PS3 you know.

I actually have four accounts including the kids as I have a US and JPN one too-but that's still fewer accounts than people, isn't it? The number of us who have different region accs will be tiny too-only the people like those here will bother and even then not all of us.

andy8533d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele33d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk33d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 33d ago
Athlon10134d ago (Edited 34d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit33d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg33d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10133d ago (Edited 33d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14933d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle46d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit46d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog46d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog46d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad46d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_46d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage46d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection
