The Witcher 2-Review: One of the finest RPGs in history - PC Games

The Witcher 2 is one of the best RPGs in history. But it's not perfect. The combat is somehow a little unbalanced, the end is not that spectacular. But you'll get a brilliant story, stunning fights, interesting characters, a robust skill tree and much more.

One of the finest RPGs, 88. Good score, but you think by calling one of the best RPGS ever, it get at least a 90. But that just goes to prove scores aren't everything.

BeastlyRig5536d ago (Edited 5536d ago )

And look!

"But after the release of the Witcher 1, we needed to take some time to polish the editor itself for modders...and I'm pretty sure it's gonna be the case this time round too."

who gets an 88? just give it a damn 90!

They did great for an $8 million dollar budget!
It's better than dragon lame 2 which probably had a $30 million dollar budget!

When a game makes it to console, the console makers pay for high reviews. This ensures high sales, note how most console releases get 9's even if its a garbage game u will hardly see scores below 7.

Pc versions of the same games on console also score lower. Even though they are the superior versions. Fact is there is no one actively trying to promote the PC platform hence most reviewers are open to give PC exclusive games what ever score they desire.

Uh no. Brink was hyped big time and scored crap all around and it was a big time publisher so there goes that theory. And that is just a recent game. I don't doubt some publishers pay for scores but that certainly isn't the case with ALL games. Most of the 90+ rated games I've played are great.

Let us know when a console exclusive gets a low score. in most cases evne if the game is crap and a rehash it will always get a high score.

They know kids always want a high meta to brag about the platform they support.

PC exclusive devs like CD projekt dont really have the muscle or the budget that Sony or MS devs have to hype a exclusive or to pay of reviewers for good reviews.

Very true my friend. Game Review websites give games higher scores then they are actually worth so they keep getting "free" copies of the games to reviews. For example, EA gives IGN dragon age, they give it a good score they get their hands of dragon age 2 early, if they smash it completely then EA will not give them dragon age 2 because they will talk shit about it and possibly interfere with sales.

PC games are very different, especially games that don't have big developers behind them and have a small budget. The Witcher 2 is one of those games that review websites don't have any reason to lie about because they won't be receiving any free games in the first place. Most games get reviews posted up first thing, 12:01pm. Why? Because they got the game early! Look at all the Witcher 2 reviews... Oh wait... There is not much... That means reviewers must be being fully honest about their review on the game.

What the heck? CD Projekt is a huge company with around 600 employees, they've been publishing games for ages in Eastern Europe and are behind Good Old Games, arguably one of the most successful digital distribution platforms in the industry. CD Projekt isn't some small outfit in the middle of nowhere, they are a big company that makes good money.

Further, this "paying reviewers" thing is insane. You do realize in the US, where most gaming publications are based, it's actually against the law now to receive something for a review and not disclose it to the public. Despite these rules and regulations these "money hat" rumors are still thrown around like free candy.

Secondly, think about the logic of what you are saying. Do you actually think a company can pay off all sites that review their games without having to tell anyone?

PC Games magazine does not use inflated ratings. Only two games have ever gotten a 96. An 88 is a very good rating.

It's just that modern game journalism tends to look like this: "10/10 for this awesome AAA console game ZOMG! Best game ever!"

solar5536d ago

gamepro gives out sooo many perferct scores. review scores mean nothing nowadays for that reason you stated.

ps3destroyer5535d ago

Stupid as hell.If it's better than the first one it clearly deserves higher than 88/100.

scores are just easiest way of comunicacion, read the review

stealth500k5536d ago (Edited 5536d ago )

about a 1000 rpgs have gotten 88 scores..........

does that warrent one of the finest rpgs in history blurb?

The finest rpg in history score to me gets a 98-100 cumulative. Because to me the greatest action rpg of all time is OOT and its score is 97.8 (something) cum. It would have to be above that.

Thats about it.

fluffydelusions5536d ago

Yeah kind of weird. I know scores are subjective but if you personally are going to call something the finest...you'd think you hand out a better score.

pr0digyZA5536d ago

But how else will you get people to click on your link if you are one out of many giving it an awesome score.

ct035536d ago

The finest RPG in history should get a 98-100? There's a problem: PC Games magazine has never given a higher rating than 96/100. And only two games have achieved this.

Which makes sense, because there are no perfect games. The 10/10 journalism just hasn't understood this.

Imdb has exactly 3 films with an average rating of more than 9/10 (9.2, 9.2 and 9.0). Game reviews are inflated like crazy.

stealth500k5536d ago (Edited 5536d ago )

the finest rpg right now has a ranking of almost 98 (OOT) cum. through metacritic and gamerankings

so if your going to call it that you better damn well be close.

All I object to is calling it the "one of the finest in history" if your giving it an 88 score which plenty of rpgs have gotten.

Its retarded

It's now official.........time to upgrade.Nvidia or ATI ?($200 range) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

F4sterTh4nFTL5536d ago (Edited 5536d ago )

I recommend ATI Radeon HD 6850 or 6870 or the Nvidia's GeForce GTX 560

Substance1015536d ago

GTX 560 is great in that range and very overclockable.

Si-Fly5536d ago

Shame you're in the US I've got a brand new unboxed 570 going on eBay later!

il-mouzer5536d ago

is it available for EU ;)

Si-Fly5536d ago

Yeah it will be available for EU. I had to send my first gtx570 back to overclockers and as I'd only just bought the pc I bought a replacement because I couldn't bare to be without pc gaming for a week, so now have 2 lol.

joydestroy5536d ago

yep i rock two MSI GTX 560 Ti's and they blast through everything on high @ 1080p

OtherWhiteMeat5536d ago

...really earn a 10 or 9.5 in this case I think pcgames.de should have given at least 90 from the review they have written.

The actor who portrayed Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher series of games has died

Alexander Morton, the Scottish actor probably best known for starring in British comedy drama Monarch of the Glen - but known to me for being the hilariously foul-mouthed dwarf Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3 - has died aged 81.
