E3 2011: Don’t Count Microsoft Out Just Yet

Geek Revolt writes "Around the internet—gamers appear least excited for Microsoft’s 2011 E3 press conference, it’s easy to understand how new hardware from Sony & Nintendo is more appealing than another Halo game. Yet—out of the big three Microsoft’s situation is the most unique, and their presentation has the potential to be one of the strongest; here’s why you shouldn’t count them out just yet."

X720... probably not this year, maybe next year or at the latest 2013.

As for "E3 2011: Don’t Count Microsoft Out Just Yet"

Hummm... Did Microsoft go somewhere ?

As for this year's E3... i expect a great show from all manufacturers... Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.

malamdra5488d ago

that "edge" that Sony has, consist of 20 exclusives this year and at least 5 already announced for 2012 vs gears/halo/kinect

even if Microsoft announced 15 AAA exclusives and Sony none, PS3 would still have the edge

mastiffchild5488d ago

Was anyone really counting them out anyway? I thought we were all just hoping they'd show us the games they have up their sleeve, am I mental? MS have always kept something back for their big, home country shindig at E3 so don't be shocked, as few here will be anyway, when they have some goodies this year too. I might have been playing more on PS3 for various reasons but that doesn't mean I'm not ready for them to announce more than Gears3 this year-every gamer worth their salt will be hoping for great things from everyone at E3 and not just their preferred console platform holders.

InTheKnow5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

.
It's going to be the biggest and best E3 this gen, that I am sure of.

Nintendo really has me pumped for their new machine. With crazy rumors the thing will be at least 50% more powerful than either 360 or PS3 has got me excited, tho I should say, Nintendo is notoriously cheap when it comes to these things...the 3ds is a perfect example. Still, Mario in 1080p and 60fps will be a sight to behold and could easily steal the show.

Sony has had nothing but bad press this year with Geohotz and the PSN hack and it couldn't of happened at a worst time with arguably their best line up ever. Not much to expect from them since they announce all their titles months and in some cases years in advance, this year is no different. I am curious about the PSP2 price point and 2 analog sticks is something EVERYBODY has been asking for. Can't wait to have a launch date.

Microsoft is always quite. Rumors are always running rampant about what they are up to. Skype cost a fortune so you can expect a lot of info on that marriage. Halo anniversary edition is the worst kept secret in gaming. Remedy says Alan wake will make another appearance THIS YEAR which is surprising but it's not AW2 which is scheduled for next year. Must be the PC version and/or a windows/kinect something or another. Either way it's coming fall 2011. Kinect will have a massive showing this year with all the titles announced at the TGS plus a bunch of new ip's. Of course Gears Of war 3 is still months away and I suspect the quality of that game will be incredible with months still to go. Crytek still has yet to show Kingdoms and I'm sure they will have a game play trailer. Forza 4 and turn 10 usual " we are the best " banter will be there. Haven't heard anything from XCOM, Mechassault ( announced 2009 ) Too human, Lost odyssey, Blue Dragon are all due for some information. If all that is not enough, I have to believe Microsoft will NOT let Nintendo launch first and secure all the middleware for themselves so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some new Xbox information or even a reveal.

EA and Activision is a show unto itself. Massive dollars will be spent pushing eash others games. COD hasn't shown anything YET and that is why it's exciting. Microsoft usual starts of E3 with a live COD demo, I wonder if they will again. Activision has been cuddling up to Sony recently by announcing a PS3 COD bundle and that could mean a few things. My bet is Activision has heard that M$ has made a deal with EA for some exclusive map packs like their deal with Activision...we'll see.

Either way, it about as big as it gets this year folks.

fluffydelusions5488d ago

Nothing new to read here...just wishful thinking.

S_C5488d ago

@plbelanger
nothing new with your comment either just another ps3 fanboy trying to troll

S_C5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

@MrFlibble
If i said somthing like that in a ps3 e3 article youd say the exact same thing so no point playing the good cop bad cop, as far as im concernd he is trying to troll, otherwise what value does his comment add to the debate ......nothing

i hope both sony and microsoft have a great e3, after all theres no harm in competiton. But some people on here make out like if console gameing is the be all and end all.

SweatyFlorida5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

@ S_C
wow you must be really butt hurt to jump to the conclusion that he is a ps3 user 'o' Don't be an xbot plz!

Microsoft is dead last, and those are the facts. They'd have to really pull something out of their ass to even compete with the Wii2 or NGP, on top of the other things the other companies are doing (Ps3 exclusives and 3DS)

S_C5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

@ SweatyFlorida
why would i be butt hurt ? there is nothing to be butt hurt about.

Wii2 are you kidding me, the next generation of nintendo is only just the same as this console generation on 360 and ps3

they can not compete with Sony&Nintendo software wise

newhumanbreed5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

Really? You're telling me a company that made its name by making the best software can't compete with Nintendo and Sony software wise? Yea, you don't know what you're talking about.

guigsy5488d ago

Not in terms of volume, but absolutely in terms of quality. Gears 3 and Forza 4 are nailed on triple A titles, and a new Alan Wake has also been confirmed for this year. Plus there's also the chance of a Halo CE remake.

stealth500k5488d ago

last year microsoft got embarrased. And this year will be the exact same.

Nintendo and sony bring the hardcore. Microsoft brings the shitnect

lelo2play5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

Don't understand your logic, since E3 is in the USA and the X360 has being selling more then the PS3 and Wii in the USA, for quite some time.

I guess Microsoft is really pissed that you didn't like their E3. /s

stealth500k5488d ago

its about games and cool announcements.

Not sales of systems

NYC_Gamer5488d ago

^^^well,we are gamers not share-holders we like to play exclusives not focus on sales data.now 360 outselling PS3 in the states would make me happy if had stock in MS.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio26d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing26d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit26d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing26d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn228d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn227d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown28d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay28d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay28d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac27d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger28d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300028d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde28d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde27d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_27d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
