Sony has a ten year plan for the PS3. It just hit its stride last year. Don't expect PS4 till 2013 or 2014. Sony can hold off Nintendo. They learned from this generation.

jonlynch5480d ago

How do people keep getting the "10 year plan" confused. Sony intends to support it 10 years like the PS2. They don't intend to hold PS4 till 2016.

sikbeta5480d ago

Exactly, PS3 has a 10 year plan, but doesn't mean there will be no other new Console before that cycle ends, the PS3 was released in 2006 and the PS2 surpassed its life cycle already :P

tigertron5480d ago

Exactly, the PS2 was supported well into the PS3's life cycle. A PS4 releasing within the next couple of the years will not be shocking.

EVILDEAD3605480d ago

Their release dates will be determined at the show. But Wii 2 with less powerful specs and 6 to 9 month lead on the other systems won't do as much damage as people believe.

My take

ASSASSYN 36o5480d ago

Jon I have been saying that for years.

Here we go with the 10 BS again.

Nitrowolf25480d ago

whats so BS about it?
Sony does have a ten year plan on it. 10 years of supporting it, that doesn't mean they can't rol out a new console. Look at PS2 it's been 10 years already and they are still supporting it

jonlynch5477d ago

@Nitrowolf2

I think he means the fools that confuse support for a system across 10 years with the misconception that the PS4 will be held off for 10 years.

the_best_player5480d ago (Edited 5480d ago )

The Wii 2 does not even have a hard drive (fact)

VG_Releaser5480d ago

And that hurt the first Wii?

fluffydelusions5480d ago

Yep sounds like another casual console. Can't blame them though..wii made tons of money.

GameTavern5480d ago

How is this a "Fact"? NOthing is in cement until e3.

sikbeta5480d ago

First, it's just a rumor that I don't believe, second, it may not hurt the wii, but if N want the same amount of third party support, they better get an HDD in that new console and embrace the era of the DLC...

Shok5480d ago

Lol, you just wrote a RUMOR off as a fact xD

Lmfao.

but thinking it will be out by 2012 is also wrong. I would expect it to launch 2013, even by Christmas (at least in one territory)

The PS4 and Xbox 3 will most likely be shown or mentioned during E3 2012. Xbox 3 probably will be out either before E3 2013 or until christmas very close (before or after) the PS4.

That is, if the PS4 doesn't launch until 2014, which I don't think so... maybe Q1 2014 at the latest (for both consoles)

BeastlyRig5480d ago (Edited 5480d ago )

yeah but If wii2 starts selling anything like the wii1 did then sony & MS better hurry it up or lose alot of money!

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 5477d ago
ShyGuy135480d ago

And both of those rushed consoles will be superior to whatever Nintendo spits out..

Istanbull5480d ago

I don't care when Nintendo releases its next console, I know it won't be a true next gen console. I want MS and Sony to lengthen this gen as long as possible.

Soldierone5480d ago

Thats exactly what they will do. They know this generation still has a little milking. Last generation they rushed it a bit and look at how many studios we lost in the transition due to costs...we still dont even have the flourishment of sub par games every. (well japan does)

FACT Developers are not going to jump ship on PS3 and Xbox just to support the Wii, isn't gonna happen. Therefore they wont be forced worth crap.

Valk5479d ago

YOu have no understanding of what next gen means. When Nintendo releases their next console it will be their next generation of consoles.

Its just amusing how many people want to be ignorant and refuse to comprehend. Generations are not determined by the tech inside.
Nes was their first generation console.
Snes was their second line or generation of consoles
N64 3rd
Gamesube 4th
Wii 5th.
Their next console will be their 6th generation console.
This is basics for gaming. Whats not to understand?

gameseveryday5480d ago

Not so soon, I think. May be 2012 will be the year they will announce their next gen consoles.

Pintheshadows5480d ago

Nintendo would be better of buying every SNES they can find and repacking them as if they were new.

Having said that i'm looking forward to seeing how far Nintendo is off the mark with Wii2.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5480d ago

yea right. Sony has stated numerous times that they aren't interested in being first, just best. They'll release the ps4 when they're ready. Nintendo can release whatever they want.....next gen doesn't start til ps4 and xbox720 gets here. Nintendo will be the first company to release 2 home consoles in a single generation lol.

kramun5480d ago (Edited 5480d ago )

How does that work, releasing 2 home consoles in a single generation? There isn't a set start date for companies to release new hardware. They can sell new consoles whenever they want.

EDIT:By your crazy logic MS already did it with the 360.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5480d ago

They sure can. Nintendo's about to prove it.

radphil5480d ago

"How does that work, releasing 2 home consoles in a single generation?"

Easy, it's called not caring about major upgrading.

colonel1795480d ago

It's not like they will launch 2 consoles the same generation. It is just that this generation is lasting more. The Wii was created to have the usual 5 year cycle. I don't think Nintendo realized that this gen was going to last longer.

If Nintendo does not launch a significantly better console than the PS3/Xbox360, then it will be considered the 2nd console for the current gen, because by the time PS4/Xbox 3 launch, the Wii 2 will be 1 to 2 years old, and would be considered last gen, compared to the other consoles.

If the Wii 2 is indeed much more powerful, to be considered a next gen console, I think that it will be held back by the xbox360 (and PS3 to some extent, since it is more powerful though), and it won't be able to showcase its power by third parties, because we all know that they will just be porting PS3/360 games (Ubisoft already said it).

So for me, Nintendo is in a Win (for the moment)/Lose situation. or even a lose/lose situation.

Regardless, I want Zelda with Uncharted 3 graphics!

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio17d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing17d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit17d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing17d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8520d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele19d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk19d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay19d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10120d ago (Edited 20d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit19d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg19d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10119d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14919d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay19d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn220d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn219d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown19d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay19d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay19d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac19d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger20d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300020d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde20d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde19d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
