I'm glad this is happening to them. They definitely needed to be humbled, everyone knew that. With that said, I don't want them to leave the console business if everything bombs. Competition is good, and God forbid that Microsoft ends up dominating and not having any (Nintendo will probably be a generation behind from now on).

Blu-Ray was not introduced this gen for gamers. The PS3 has it to increase the Blu-Ray user base plain and simple. It's a great idea obviously, but much too soon to be taken advantage of. Next generation the additional storage capacity will be a must. Sony can't rely on Playstation alone, but they can't afford to lose Playstation either. It's a tough edge to balance and very risky. The various reconfigurations have all been done to cut costs, this is being done to artificially lower the retail price much faster than they had planned.

I know it is easy to get excited over console "wars", but selling at or under the 360's pace was never an option for Sony. Sony's investors seen 100+ million consoles sold the last two generations. I am sure they are not relieved to see the PS3 following a console that sold less than 1/5th the amount. Unless you consider the Xbox and Xbox 360 a huge success, the PS3 is in fact doing very poorly. The price is not an excuse since the system losses money each time it is sold. Software revenues are not helping matters which is one reason why b/c is being eliminated. Sony needs to keep the two business models seperated. Right now Sony needs the PS2 and PSP more than ever.

Time is the PS3's biggest problem. The technology is great, it's just so far ahead of the current dev cycle that it's too costly to make a profit. When the next generation of consoles arrive and devs catch up with the technology, the PS3 will hold up well. It's just unfortunate that it will take so long to get there and that is where the greatest threat is. If a profitable business model isn't there, devs will look somewhere else.

A fanboy is simply a person who is loyal to a particular company. I am a former Microsoft fanman. I have worked in Technology for over 20 years and I have owned Microsoft products for most of those years. I have continued to pay outragous license fees for mediocre products. I have to re-image laptops at least twice a year because of OS flaws and I have sent two XBOX360 machines back to Austin for repair. Now the flipside. My father in law who is a complete Sony Fanman and has owned Sony products for the last 30 years. His 22 year old Sony TV finally gave up the ghost so he purchased a new Sony HDTV. He still has his 8 year old Sony digital camera and his Sony VAIO desktop still runs after 10 years. Although I have re-imaged the thing ten times because Microcrap runs on it. Fortunately I talked him into purchasing an Apple laptop which I will do the same. I'm sorry to rant but I have been in this industry more than most of you and although the 360 does have the library and developer backing don't be blind that they have huge QA issues. I will give my money to the new 40gb PS3 and I will enjoy what games they do have and look forward to the future games. One thing I won't worry about is if it will last until I purchase the next gen console.

I have a feeling that if HOME is done right it may impact the sales of the PS3 to the point of 100 million units again. HOME may turn out to sell more PS3;s then Wii. (if they do it the way im dreaming)

the problem i have with the ps3 is that this year its games suck and next year the big games coming out for the ps3 are old franchises with a new glossy coat which we have all seen over and over and over again mgs/ratchet and clank/gt5/final fantasy while the xbox 360 has new refreshing ips gears of war/masseffect/bioshock/alalnw ake/too human and so on this is why the xbox to me still seams light years a better GAMING console than the ps3.

Yep I own a Mac. PC and a PS3. I will buy a 360 (love GOW, As for Halo..umm) , but next revision. The one with HD-DVD and a hard drive.

I have to say this gives me a new found respect for Sony, it may not be enough to get me to buy a PS3 but I respect them a little more now. When someone put their hands up and says "hey Ill be honest for a change and stop being arrogent" that is somthing I can't bash, I may be an a$$hole but I'm not evil. IMO I think Sony should forget about getting third party support from America, MS has that arena locked down tight. I think Sony should buy up all the upcomming devs in Japan or even reach out to Korean or European devs and go from there. The Playstation brand still has strong standing in europe so it would be wise to get devs that cater to that reagion.

The only problem Sony Has is that the PS3 is so advanced that its taking some time for the devs to figure it out. Then you have the wii, then the xbox, I said this once, ill say it again, the 360 is a great for what it is, its a system that is between the xbox (1) and PS3. Its a mid-gen system. Its not advanced like the ps3. I'm not knocking the 360, its great for NOW, but not say 2-3 years from now. MS would have to come out with another system to really be equal with the PS3, as far as, Hard Drive (easy swap) , HD-dvd player built in, Free online, etc... The list can go on, and on.

As for the Devs, they will have to make a choice, will they decide to take the plunge? Look at the 1st party games Sony has had. Lair, Hs, Uncharted, etc... I know some will say the games are short, and Lair had bad controls. I would say YES, but that is the Devs fault. But the Graphics are great, Lair's are awesome, its really is a ground breaking game. I know, I know, Graphics are not important, its Gameplay. YES and that is why everyone of us, have either upgraded to the 360, or Ps3 is just for the Gameplay? Yea right, I played some great games on my PS1. It's Graphics that will push this gen, Once you have the graphics, then game play will come. It's like the next-gen games for the PS3 are so focused on the Graphics, that the Devs forget about the gameplay, but this will come.

So Sony is humbled a bit, that good, every one needs to be this way. I think, if this is true, Sony will have to work for the lead this time, and that will benefit PS3 owners.

it appears that the CELL processor is ... with a local memory read bandwidth of ~16MB p/second. Developers on the Playstation3 will have to work around such a design constraint, with official Sony documentation suggesting that code shouldn't be read from local memory, but written to main memory via the RSX and read from there instead.

Late is a huge understatement. I don't ever remember waiting an entire year and a half for good games to come out for a system. (you need at least 5 really good games to feed the public at launch)

This is a not how I pictured my gaming experience for the PS3. Heavenly Sword not really my type of game, so I only had Resistance and MotorStorm to play on my system.

-And I can't tell you when last I played them because these days my PS3 doesn't even come on, unless it's a firmware update. I'm so tired of hearing the games are coming, their coming, that I'm done waiting.

Instead I'm playing, on 360, day and night. My PS3 is just collecting dust, I actually thought about selling it. -And maybe come back in late 2008 early 2009, when games actually catch up with the system.

It's nice that the PS3 is all advance and has amazing graphics and great design and sweet promise for the future. -But let me be the first to tell you, I would rather be playing games then hearing about them.

And Right now I'm tired of waiting, it's just too long, -and it doesn't help that Sony keeps making mistakes. (Like not releasing the rumble controller to the U.S. at the same time that japan will get it.) -The main reason I decided to get Call of Duty 4 for 360 instead of PS3.

I've already raised the white flag, all my close friends are like PS,.. what! Nah, I'm on 360.. There is just no real reason to run out and buy a PS3. -I just hope Sony can pull a rabbit out of its hat and give people a reason to buy one this Christmas. Because if not they might not have to worry about if it will last 10 years as it was designed because it might not last the next 3 months, if they lose third party developers.

i think sites just make up any negative news that they can on the ps3 because so many people feed off it and it drives people to websites like these.. I mean it builds traffic to there site because they probably dont get a lot of it.. But once a website post an article about how bad the ps3 is on there website, people jump all over it..

I think the 360 has more to worry about after this year than the ps3 does.. Worry about how they will keep up with the ps3 in 2008.. Halo 3 is done and over with. And all the momentum for 2008 is going for the ps3. Because i really dont see anything stopping the ps3 from taking over next year in the console war.. Ps3 has yet to drop one of there big hitters yet and its still selling pretty damn good with a higher price tag.. And the ps3 just recently got a price cut so now the ps3 is in the same price range as the 360.. We should all just wait and talk about this at the end of next year..

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
