The console with the install base gets the support and the games. It was PS2 last gen, this gen it is Xbox 360. People seem to think there is some kind of "Brand Loyalty" in the games industry. 3rd party games publishers "don't care" which console wins. They just want to support the consoles that are winning.

To make PS3 games costs games producers "the most" money bc PS3 has the most expensive dev kits as well as longer production cycles bc of the nonfriendly programming architecture of the Cell Processor. Why would companies spend the most money to see the least returns?? News flash...The PS3 has "the smallest install base of all 3 next-gen consoles.

Sony has ben losing countless games that have been exclusive to PS brand. Ace Combat, Devil May Cry, Grand Theft Auto, Katamari, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, Virtua Fighter......Don't be suprised when other games jump ship.

Overall Sony has no-one to blame but themselves. They put Bluray before games. They have shot themselves in the foot with their arrogance claiming that the PS community would buy a PS3 "no matter what it was". And that they could move 5 million PS3s even if it had no games.

The article said Developers are leaving the ps3, which they aren't. Yes some support the thing that brings investors more money, but as the ps3 gains in sales, the same exact thing is going to happen. No developers are going to make the money on the 360 as they have the PS2/WII. Its two year run is hitting 12 million units. Keep in mind the Biggest game for the system could only barely sell more units than the Wii. The ps2 had 40 million units sold by year 2. Just to put things into perspective... This coming holiday the ps3 is going to sell 5+ million units. Now unless Halo3 and Mass Effect can bring in 5 million+ more users, its going to be very close in 2008. Developers will finally be able to make $ from the ps3 user base. With PS3 Developers churning out HD games at 60fps and no slowdown/framerate, they are only going to share the information with others.

Its going to really be interesting to see what can the 360 do to keep up with the PS3 in 08. Theres only 1 halo. Sony's rolling out Gran Turismo/MGS/Little Big Planet/Tekken/Final Fantasy etc.

Finally, Sony decides to think of its fans over it's own arrogant ass.
All they needed to do to not let the Wii and 360 run away was keep GTA4 a timed exclusive, not give up on DMC4, and try their hardest for MH3.

It all might be a little too late, but it's nice to see them get off their asses to bring quality back to the people that are still keeping them afloat.

Devs will not or can ignor the profits of the 360 fanbase Next-gen games are too expensive and the MSFT tools help devs make monster killings in sales from the quality games they make with them and it can only get bette as the devs earn how to tap more power from the 360 and using the cores better.

This issue is more important than Huxley or MGS4 etc. what happens after those games release?, how can any company succeed without support from devs making other types of games that usually bring in more new console owners than a few block busters?. This is why it bugs me when I see the List of games with LBP and more, what about after they release?.

I would see how the PS3 is selling once the big guns come out. Then if it's selling bad, jump ship. Right now the Playstation sold better than the 360 did it's first year with no games and with competition. Games are now starting to coming out, hardware is at a good price. No way is this the end of the Playstation. 360 is on a run right now I must admit, but its savior Halo is over and done wit. Europe and Japan alone will keep the PS3 afloat. America will finally see the light in 08.

wasn't it Bungie leaving MS?? once MS saw what Ratchet, Uncharted & especially Killzone 2 were shaping up to be on the PS3. They paniced thinking "wow our hardware can't do that stuff, we better get our big gun out the door fast and try to make sales NOW before the public sees what the PS3 can do" The result?? Bungie being forced to finish early, and releasing a game that a select few PS3 games beat graphically (how can that happen if the PS3 is so hard to develop for?? and developers have more experience on the 360??) think about that for a sec. Just look at the in game footage of Killzone 2! IT'S AMAZING what the developers can do with the PS3 and if all these damn developers can get off their lazy asses and learn whats possible on the PS3 then that's when the PS3 will truly shine, no one is doubting the power the PS3 has.

XI.. There are way more 360 games that flop than sell well.. The only games i see that sell well are FPS games and sport games on the 360.. like bioshock and halo 3.. an about sony buy developers, if any of you guys are old enough to remember before the Ps1 came out, it was SUPPOSED to be sony making a CD rom based add on for nintendo, but sony wanted to OWN the right to every game that nintendo used on CD, basically trying to srong arm nintendo out of its games an nintendo refused an went with panasonic I think it was. therefore leaving sony with this CD rom based console that ultimately became the PS1. an right after that sony BOUGHT alot of developer help because they were the new kid on the block, an thats basically the same thing MS is doing!!

I think the rumour has more to do with Japanese developers defecting to the wii rather than western developers giving more love to the 360. I suspect this has a lot to do with Capcom's recent decision to move Monster Hunter to the wii. This was especially bad because Monster Hunter 3 had already been announced for the PS3 before Capcom did a very public about-face. In the recent past, once a developer had publicly promised a game to Sony, it was pretty much locked in, because taking the game back later and giving it to somebody else would severely embarrass Sony and piss them off. Nobody dared to piss off Sony during the PS2 era. But now Capcom has done what was once unthinkable, yanking Monster Hunter and delivering a shockingly blunt no-confidence vote to the PS3. This wasn't just a case of a PS3 version getting dropped. This was a PS3 exclusive turning into a wii exclusive. That Capcom didn't even bother to sugar-coat the switch ("because of high development costs...") told everybody that Capcom no longer worried or cared about how Sony would feel about it.

Now that one steer has jumped the fence, the rest of the herd might follow. Sony needs to make sure no other devs follow Capcom and do their own u-turns with games previously committed to the PS3. If I were to guess, I would say one of those developers now getting some serious ass kissing from Sony is Square Enix. Although the next Final Fantasy has been announced for the PS3, we haven't seen squat about the game beyond a few screenshots and a couple of short trailers. And we know it's being built on a multi-platform engine. At this early stage of development it's still easy for Square to pull a little reverse play of its own on Sony. And it's a lot less uncomfortable now that somebody else - namely Capcom - has done it first and broken the ice.

The next few weeks is going to be exciting.

If it was the other way around some of you guys would say that Sony is arrogant. Sony faces a toughter battle than expected. If the developers are patient and stick to the program. They will find in time that PS3 will be victorious this gen.

Developers must be saying, "When you pay all the money it takes to make video games... and to pay developers, graphic artist, and the hundreds of people... then we do just that." Begging is one of those things that will not make a company go, "Ok... just because you say so.. we will"... Next gen video games are super expensive to make, so I think there will be less and less exclusives. However if I'm a developer and I want to make an exclusive, do I do it on the platform that's hardest to develop for and has the smallest install base, or do I go with the 360, with the possibility of also releasing it on Games for Windows? It's a no-brainer.

The PS2 had problems at launch (jaggy games), and was well known as the more difficult system to develop for (compared to the easy Xbox and GC setups), but developers worked through it because it was the number one selling system by a landslide. The PS3 is more like the Saturn. A more expensive system that isn't selling as strong as the competition, and is tougher to develop games on. Now perhaps the PS3 shouldn't be compared to the travesty that was the Saturn, but the bottem line is developers may not bother to put the cell through the paces if the return isn't there. Like it or not it's smarter for developers to make the far friendlier 360 (and sales leader among the two)the lead system and simply port over a PS3 version.

i'm a gamer, not a fanboy. meaning i will play any game on any console. screw brand loyalty! the only thing i'm loyal to is my girl and my wallet. when was the last time one of these companies did anything that really benefitted anyone but themselves. i have a wii, a 360, and will have a ps3 when sony starts selling them with the dualshock 3 packed in. even though this is just a rumor, i wouldn't be surprised if this turned out to be true. look at some of the statements that have been made by square enix, konami, and other BIG publishers about sony needing to drop the price to grow its user base. i know some of you will turn a blind eye to the facts of the matter, but sony's in a tough spot. let me throw out some things that some might wish to ponder.

each console is based on a different business model.

the 360 is really just a budget priced gaming/media center pc aimed at giving developers with pc gaming development experience another option to getting there IP's out to the gaming masses. look how many games go from pc to 360 and vise versa for all the proof you need. one platform supplementing the other.

the wii is an r&d project for nintendo based on overstocked gamecube hardware. nintendo hasn't sold a console for a loss since the virtual boy(what a pos that was!), and they aren't in a position to sink a ton of money into HD gaming without there being any standardization in the media format or display resolution. when the tech becomes affordable
to the average consumer, hdtv attach rates become greater than sdtv sales, and industry standardization happens regarding media format and resolution, then ninty will make the jump. they don't have the deep pockets that M$ and $ony have and to have jumped in now would've been financial suicide for them.

and finally, the ps3. is it a game console? is it a hi-def movie player? a supercomputer? and that is one of the problems, no discernable identity. the average consumer doesn't know what it really is, and the way sony is marketing it isn't doing anything to help matters. let's just assume its a game console to preface what i'm about to write.

i am the average consumer. i'm the guy that sony expected to work overtime and nonsense like that to afford the ps3. when it came out, i was in wal-mart testing one out in the display case. my reaction, totally unimpressed. for something to cost so much and be hyped to be the "true beginning in hi-def gaming", the ps3 was a huge let down. sure the visuals were fantastic and the design of the console was sexy as hell, but i walked around the corner and guess what. for $200 dollars less there's another console with identical visuals. how many other people do you think felt the same way i did? of course this is where all the fanboys are going to say, "the 360 had a year head start". sure it did, but for the ps3 to cost that much, be billed as future proof and technologically superior in every way to anything before it(ie the 360) there should have been a least a little discernable difference where there was none. and now the fanboys will say "wait till 08 when (insert game list) comes out". for that kind of money, there should be games to play now to get you to 08. its my opinion, but it just seems to me like the ps3 was rushed out to door. way too many promises and much to much hype. sony's starting to remind me of sega when they were in the hardware business.

now to be fair, do i like the ps3. sure i do, there's just no compelling reason to pay that much for one right now. anyone that can't see the potential of the ps3 is blind or ignorant. there are a ton of gamers like me that feel the same way and until some things change, sony's position will remain the same. looking at some of the decisions they've made makes me wonder if they even know why the ps2 was such a huge success. the price was perfect and literally tons of content. when the price of a "properly equipped" ps3 comes down to about $299, then sales will reach levels that will have publishers/developers clamoring to get their stuff on the ps3. by "properly equipped" i mean dualshock 3 and no loss of features. ultimately, the ps3's success will depend on price and game selection.

@jackdoe: had M$ not stepped up and taken the blame and appropriately compensated its customers, i'd have said that their reputation had taken a serious hit, but given the fact that their console still sells despite the known rrod issues is a testament to the strength of the consoles game library. mine went rrod while my girl was rockin GH 2. yeah it sucked, yeah i was pissed, but M$ did right by me so i have no beef with them. while it was being repaired, i spent more time with my son, had more sex with my girl, and played a crap load of old school vc titles. since i've gotten it back, i've had no problems with it. it runs quieter and i don't use an external cooling fan anymore thanks to the extended warranty. have literally played halo 3 for hours on end with no problems whatsoever. every cloud has its silver lining and sony will find theirs soon, i hope.

whenever theres a RUMOR about the PS3 and it's bad all of a sudden it's Gospel from the mouth of Jesus Christ himself! yet when it's something bad about the xbox all of a sudden, the site had no credibility to begin with, the author was a drunk hack of a no-body who sleeps with his sister, or my favorite, Sony bought the website and is now a subsidiary of their company.

Until I get confirmation on this from another source I won't believe it. It is like saying MS is withdrawing from Japan and not publishing games in certain European countries.

While Microsoft continues to have hardware problems and the prospect of somehow digging out more space on an HD-DVD in order to combat Blu-ray, Sony and Nintendo share the problem (Though each in it's own way) of needing to find better ways to help/support developers in their work to figure out optimal development methods for their systems.

There is so much that is New, New, New, and I truly believe that each company will find their own niche, have their own (To varying degrees) large group of consumers with quite a bit of intermingling. Microsoft, though paying for their haste is in a decent position right now. Nintendo, though they are allowing some pure dirt to be released has a growing amount of gold to be dug from it, and is really only now about to hit stride imo. Sony has taken some serious knocks due to the initial ridiculous price of the PS3, and the production cost reasons why they must sell it for so much. But they were on top before. Alot of people want the PS3, but just can't afford it yet. They will get a nice boost from the 40 gig, but will probably have to create an even more "bare bones" version before the system really takes off.

Even so, I believe that there will be several KEY developers that stick it out with Sony and the PS3, figure it out, and produce some games of the Caliber that we know God of War 3 will be. I believe that by next year, each respective company will be able to take a breath of relief and really bring it; to us the Consumer which means that everyone wins.

Each company has it's problems, but none of them are insurmountable. Developers want to make money off of all of these systems. Everyone just needs to figure out which specific way is best for each console. I believe that we are closer to that time than we collectively think.

Lets dissect this portion. "Compared to the arrogance of past years".... This seems fishy. First, we have no transcript or official documents stating the tone or exact wording of any of these meetings where Sony is "begging" developers to make games for the PS3. I would submit that a company like Sony who has a console has to keep relationships good between itself and developers. Perhaps normal business practice is being misunderstood for something more.
Call it begging, it seems to me that Sony realized a deficiency and is taking steps to change this.
What makes me more dismissive of this story is the trend some of these sites have had since the release of the PS3.
-The PS3 is released at $599 and its too expensive, they take steps to reduce the price and they are still taking advantage of the consumer. It seems like these sites just can't admit that something is good and thats that. I guess they don't want to seem weak in the eyes of all the other competition on the web.
Its just fashionable to bash Sony now, just like it was fashionable to support Bush. As we have see with Bush, common sense usually prevails sooner or later and the truth emerges one way or another. All corporations have to make changes to stay competitive, its the nature of the industry.
I for one like that Sony's attitude has changed, there is nothing wrong with changing your business practices. MS did it when at first they were denying the RROD and then embraced it and took steps to rectify that situation, anyone who understands business at a fundamental level will agree.

To come out a little faster than they have been doing,yes i know it was the same for the 360 at first and to be fair it douse take time to develope new games but alot of gamers are becoming a little dispondent with the ps3 because of the lack of softwear evan sony them selfs admit early addopters may feel disapointed but for sony to loose any 3rd party developers would be a disaster as a third of games are made up of 3rd party developers right now,there is a new influx of games coming out but not many so i can only hope that devs learn to utilise and get behind the ps3 for sonys sake and its also good for the compitition ijust hope sonys ps3 really dousent flop but its a possabillity.

dean needs to do same type of story for the numbers in nov. and beyond. ps3 price drop/new sku plus great games coming then. plus great lineup for '08.

At least the GameCube had the "kid-friendly" market. Now Japanese gamers have switched to Wii and DS, and Western devs like the easy PC-360 development. So aside from selling Sony IP's to the wealthiest gamers (and apparently not new IP's like Lair and Heavenly), what is the PS3 target market? Maybe that MMORPG spy game will give PS3 a bigger role in the gaming world, maybe not.

Nothing wrong at improving the relationship with 3rd party, the problem with this article is just that some idiot called it "begging". I feel sory to tell you, but every company tries it's best to get more games on their platform. MS pays while Sony tries to convince.

since thats the real only reason SONY has lac-lusters 3rd party support.

M$ pays buckets to 3rd partys for xbox support ,and well make a game on ps3 get love,
make for xbox get LOADS of money for it.

the model that would get the ps3 into more homes, thus giving developers more confidence in developing on the ps3, theyre goin to purposely make fewer of. how the hell does that make since, i mean theyve already lost money but if they wanna keep it alive they will have to lose a lil more, then i think after the success of the 40gb they will reap there rewards afterwards. peace

Guys, the ps3 versus xbox360 is consuming too much of your time. True gamers want games. If the PS3 or 360 disappear, you will lose games. Comptetition is always a good thing when the parties invloved have a reputation to perform. Sony has done a great job since it entered the VG market with the PS1. Great timing, marketing and hardware. Sega was still comming out of a crap hole with its crappy performace with the 32X, Sega CD,Nomad, and it couldnt keep up woth Sony. Since them Sony has done an awesome job building a great brand called Playstation. And let us admit it, most of the 360 fans here on tis forum have enjoyed Sony consoles. So why are we trying so hard to push the PS3 down the drain? Same goes with MS. Sony has had no real competition for some time. Saturn gave up with the PS1, The Dreamcast left the fight against the PS2, and Nintendo has played it safe with the N64, gamecube and now with the Wii. They are focusing on their inhouse material and the new innovative style they have mastered which is a great thing, but not satisfactory to allot of gamers who get their thrills from other genres. So now MS after learning from the Xbox 1 are competing against the PS3. Early start to build their customer base has given them an Ace. Install base means money for developers. After all its mostly about money. MS has less inhouse studios but now more third parties developing for them because of the install base and easy to program for dev kits. The PS3 has awesome inhouse studios and this is were things went wrong. With the 360s head start, the PS3 needed to impress from day 1. Cell powered games that really show its power and great games like MGS and LBP should have come earlier to serve as a catalyst for PS3 to build a quicker install base so that third parties would quit winging and start programming. But that is not the case. Great games have not come yet, install base is small and developers are winging about dev difficulties and are afraid that their games wont sell on the ps3. The delay to produce the great games has hurt Sony and they will need to work on superb inhouse games to grow their install base quickly or they might end up way beind and lose money. And its a basic fact in buisness that if you cant make money, than it will be time to leave. This is the time to push out the first party exclusives.

We want both the ps3 and 360 and not one of the two. We want all the exclusives. We want more games.

So Sony is on its knees begging the developers not to leave. Well all you have to do is look at the big budget flops of Lair and Heavenly Sword. And than look at what the 360 is doing. Games hit the million sale mark pretty easily. Not a surprise that Capcom took its franchise elsewhere. Lost Planet sold over a million on the 360. It won't even hit the 100k for the ps3. Which means Capcom will probably continue to work on the 360 and not give a hoot about the ps3. The ps3 is done.

i must be a deluded fool..because i like my ps3 and i like the games i have and my blu-ray films im also looking forward to the games coming out on ps3...hang on stuff like this has been going on for years since the days of the nes and master system probably even earlyer than that, things never change.

well im gonna stick to being a deluded fool with my ps3, im happy.
