PSN Return Delayed, Hackers Publish Stolen Data

Sony on Friday said it would have to further delay the return of PlayStation Network following a massive security breach, just as reports stated hackers posted personal details stolen from a Sony database.

According to Reuters report out of Tokyo, Sony was able to remove those published details from a website, although the report didn't say exactly what website hosted the stolen information.

Personal details of some 2,500 people were posted, including names and "some addresses" that were in a 2001 database. The security breach has affected 77 million PSN and Qriocity accounts, and 24.6 million Sony Online Entertainment accounts.

"But but but... Hacking is not an act of terrorism! "

You should check what the word terrorism means, hacking really don't count on it. Not saying it's good thing, it's terrible, but not terrorism.

Jihaad_cpt5480d ago

Definition of terrorism:

1. a terroristic method of governing or of resisting a government.

2.the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes

3.systematic use of violence and intimidation to achieve some goal

---

So what these hackers are doing sounds exactly like terrorism, just because they are not killing Americans doesn't mean they are not performing acts of terrorism

harrisk9545479d ago (Edited 5479d ago )

Cyberterrorism is a phrase used to describe the use of Internet based attacks in terrorist activities, including acts of deliberate, large-scale disruption of computer networks, especially of personal computers attached to the Internet, by the means of tools such as computer viruses.

What has happened here to Sony and its customers is terrorism through and through. It is the stated goal of Anonymous to disrupt Sony's business and this has certainly done that and has created a fear that may prevent people from doing future business with Sony.

Sony is a corporation that makes consumer electronics. They are in business to make a profit. They were protecting their proprietary product (the PS3) within the confines of the law. Agree or don't agree with the law, but Sony was within its rights. Just as Apple, MS, IBM, CocaCola or any other company is within its rights to protect their own products. These hackers are operating outside the law with terroristic methods designed to intimidate Sony based upon some misguided sense of morality.

they def dont care but on the otherside of the coin WHOOPTY DOO they published data that included NAMES AND ADDRESSES...so they make a big story of the hackers publishing what is BASIC DATA you can get OUTTA THE PHONE BOOK...i mean its 2500 names and addresses... so basically the took the average towns yellow pages and photocopied it........what a joke...how is that to be worried about..in addition to that its from a 10 YEAR OLD DATABASE

a good percentage of it is probably outdated.

Blaine5480d ago

Agreed. It's pure fear-mongering and misinformation. Journalists with 0 integrity bending the truth to make sensationalist news.

Just read the headline: the data published isn't even from the PSN hack. But the way they say it, makes it sound like 70 million credit card numbers were published, when that's not the truth at all.

socomnick5480d ago

:/ yea they just published that useless data to show that they truly do posses the information.

Glad to see they did not post other data such as CC info, current psn subscriber addresses, phone numbers etc.

Rainstorm815480d ago

yea socomnick

They got PSN names from a database from 2001..huh?...and PSN was available to the public in 2006.

These are some gifted hackers if they can steal 2006-2011 info from a database with info from 2001

Do any of you trolls use your brains??? **dumb question**

Media fearmongering.....i wish gaming journalists were actually all about gaming journalism.....some are but most arent

zag5480d ago

jke825479d ago

KidBroSweets25480d ago (Edited 5480d ago )

bozebo5479d ago

If everybody could access the data then at least people could look for their own data and see exactly what info was leaked, that could put some concerns at rest - but then other people can also use it maliciously, particularly if the original hacker group didn't have the manpower to exploit much of it :(

RockmanII75480d ago

I think terrorists who kill would be worse, but I agree that these people need to get arrested sooner rather than later.

Biggest5480d ago

Terrorists aren't just those who kill. The hackers in this case are terrorists. Luckily for the world, they are the lame kind that just bother people for a little. They're the Carrot Top of terrorists.

@grzajabarkus

they have not taken any lives and that is an insult to anyone affected by 9 11.

that is probably why you lost a bubble.

you too @biggest

rockleex5480d ago (Edited 5480d ago )

No one has to kill anyone in order to be a terrorist.

To terrorize = to put fear into someone. Terrorists put fear into a GROUP of people or organization.

The worsts terrorists use death to create fear. But there are MANY other ways to terrorize people.

Theonetheonly5480d ago

PSN being down makes you scared?

either way terrorists are people who scare you Using whatever fear they can incite. I have never had a terrorist so much as stub my toe. in fact the only proof of terrorists i have ever seen is that day in September 10 years ago. I got the day off of school.

the better definition for these hackers is Criminals. Not F&^$%*g terrorists.

criminals are subject to the law. Terrorists are, according to the patriot act subject to no law and are people who exist in a Muslim regime who believes that Americans need to die in order to fulfill their mission on earth.

unless you believe in that whole "home grown terror thing where terrorists are only people who believe in free speech and the right to bear arms, and or question authority."

n4gisatroll5480d ago (Edited 5480d ago )

Reed:

What??????? Your seriously going to talk about the patriot act saying the only thing a terrorist is, is a Muslim??? Your insane for saying that. And tell me honestly that no one is scared about the info these hackers have released. Because if 1 person is afraid, then they are by definition, terrorists. And stop bringing up 9/11 because your misinformed about that as well.

WAR_MACHINE775480d ago (Edited 5480d ago )

@reedbananaboat Really, dude? Really? I guess you get the most racist comment of the day award! Muslim =/= terrorist. FYI... yes, these hackers are very much cyber terrorists.

Theonetheonly5479d ago

Nah people make misinformed statements on here all day.

:)

I just have an issue with that word being thrown around so lightly, given the fact that you can be jailed without due process of law indefinitely for being viewed as one.

Definitely not racist. :)

I actually study this, just thought it would be too much to digest if I were to actually try to type something too lengthy and get chastised for trying to back it up with too many big words. :)

all that fuzz in the beginning for not being able to run linux on the ps3????
i understand that removing one of the features of the console you own sucks but going this far for this?

kinda pathetic.

TKCMuzzer5480d ago (Edited 5480d ago )

These hackers are just using that as a reason now, they are just doing it to annoy Sony and everyone else.
They have no decent agenda because they are hiding behind "Anonymous" which is saying "we are anonymous and we believe in what's right, just not enough to let people know who we really are because we know deep down we are breaking the law"
One thing about people who think they are clever when it comes to avoiding the law is they will always slip up. At some point one of them won't be able to keep it to him/herself and will let it slip. I mean what's the point of proving you are good at something if no one knows it's you.
Also, lets face it, when they get caught they are going to have everything thrown at them, then we will see if they thought it was such a good cause.

a_squirrel5480d ago (Edited 5480d ago )

I agree with above. They use excuses.
I disagreee with you though...

It's really pathetic.... and redundant.

orange-skittle5480d ago

Go to XBL instead. What do you expect if you pay nothing? Sony doesnt owe any of you anything. they can stay offline for 3 weeks and dont owe you shit. So STOP complaining.

arjman5480d ago (Edited 5480d ago )

Pretty sure they owe us the cost of the PS3?
Or is that suddenly forgotten in your argument.

orange-skittle5479d ago (Edited 5479d ago )

Owe you what? Dummy please, Sony doesn't owe you a thing. You didn't pay for the servers they provided, so what should you get for free...nothing? did you pay for maintenance, did you pay for apps, did you pay for updates, did you pay for add-ons...no...not a dime, so why should they reward you with perks that you never gave back to the company? the only people that should be reimbursed is the PSN+ subscribers. You get nothing you freeloader. You bought a gaming console, the wifi modem was included as promised, but no one said that internet access was part of the deal. It doesnt state that anywhere. They just did that for you because its always been free, but then they noticed that it was expensive to maintain, so they developed PSN+ to recoup some money. Guess how much this breach is costing them....who's gonna pay now?

Athlon10111d ago (Edited 11d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit10d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg10d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10110d ago (Edited 10d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14911d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle24d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit24d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog24d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog24d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad24d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_24d ago
