Is Nintendo’s Upcoming Console Already Doomed?

Carl Daniel of TheKoalition.com writes: So, Nintendo are releasing a new console that is rumored to be slightly more powerful than the PS3? Why is this exciting news? Are we all forgetting that the PS3 has 6/7 year old tech flowing through its circuits. Shouldn’t the Big N, with their billions upon billions of dollars and 25+ years of experience, be aiming to blow the PS3 out of the water, not simply match it!

No, not even close to doomed. Why should they be so much better? Nintendo has never needed to be better than the others to be at the top.

The gamecube didn't have online, like the xbox and ps2 did. It did just fine.

The wii got mediocre internet, and slightly updated graphics, while the ps3 and xbox focused on it. The wii outsold them both with its gimmick.

Now with the next gen, why should they be any better? They'll sell just as well.

To assume Nintendo is doomed because they aren't up-to-date is simply laughable. They never have been.

Actually the gamecube did kinda* have online. And it was actually the strongest one out of the xbox/ps2/gamecube race.

And the gamecube did kinda bad in most people's eyes. I got RE4, Super Smash Bros Melee and Wind Waker so I couldn't complain but a lot of people were disappointed in the gamecube. And it didn't sell that great to memory.

Point is, gamecube was* up to date in most ways. Nintendo was the one that did the odd turnaround last-ditch-effort-play-off-the -gimmick with the Wii and it payed off. Basically, except the Wii, Nintendo's always been more or less up to date. Except they've always been a little out of touch.

I played Phantasy Star Online on Gamecube alot. I wish they'd make another one. PSU was weak sauce.

Knushwood Butt5506d ago

Yeah, I played a pretty cool little game called Homeland online on my cube.

I'm going to sing the DOOM song now.

Anyways, nothing can really be doom until it comes out. Because we don't know if it will or won't be doom.

Look at motion gaming, alot of people didn't think it would take off but it did and then theirs 3D (Which some movies use it to get more money).

nevin15506d ago (Edited 5506d ago )

If PS3 becomes $199, it is doomed. but if it doesn't, Nintendo would force Sony/Microsoft to released new consoles and therefore Nintendo would win the sales race again.

but honestly I don't Nintendo could strike gold again with project cafe if indeed its a gimmick. they already losing their core fan base especially with the news of no harddrive.

This E3 will decide the future of gaming.

Etseix5506d ago

i don't think Sony is "close" to announce PS4, like they said from the very start of the PS3 "it's a future proof console" and well, they have a point, i don't see MS releasing the next Xbox soon enough either, and if the PS3 and Xbox are still on the market, i highly doubt third parties will only focus on one system, and do crap ports to the other 2 consoles.

Maybe if MS release the next Xbox soon enough, and the ps3 is the only one behind, devs will start focusing on those 2 :/

well thats just my opinion.

DrVosknocker5506d ago

PS3 could have been "future proof" if they would have given it 1GB of system RAM. I think that was the biggest mistake. (If you don't understand why just forget it)

WetN00dle695506d ago

Add that gig plus a much better GPU and the PS3 would have been complete.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS60d ago (Edited 60d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure85d ago (Edited 85d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer86d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot86d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box85d ago (Edited 85d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno86d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay86d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno84d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK85d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
