Exclusive: Third attack against Sony planned

A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.
An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.

Don't you have to have a 2nd attack first?

rabidpancakeburglar5473d ago

There was a second attack. It says against sony not against PSN. There was 2 separate attacks on PSN and SOE

Soldierone5473d ago

SOE was attacked at the same time as PSN and they were trying to keep it up but it failed.

"A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach."

The nerve on these kids, first they hack Sony for trying to protect themselves and hardworking developers from piracy. Now they're hacking Sony because they're trying to fix their service? What's next, hacking them for using too much blue in their logos?

Where the hell are the Feds?

MintBerryCrunch5473d ago

i dont understand why people continue to call these people "kids" and it just isnt in anon's nature to do something and then not take credit for it

if these hackers are kids as most of you say, then a multi-billion, high tech company should be much better prepared for the supposed attacks that they have brought upon sony

in the end, this wont end....and nobody will win...these attacks will drastically change what Sony does next gen with its console...it will, in my opinion be much more secure, but at the same time much more closed off due to the fear that hackers will try to abuse the features that come along with the console...sony will try to keep tabs on everything and at the same time much more unforgiving with sony customers who try to do anything with their console that isnt specified in the manual

i hope im wrong, but thats just the way i see it....we will get PSN back some time this week, but as this story has said...hackers will continue to try and one up one another and try to give a big FU to Sony, any chance they get...there are extremes on both sides...no one wants to come to a middle ground...but then again, we are way past that point anyways, the damage has been done

badz1495473d ago Show
baodeus5473d ago

exactly, see how MS live is closed vs. PSN open nature. Each has it up and down side to them, but if it keep going this way (c'mon man, layoff that hacking will ya), PSN might go LIVE route.

somerandomdude5473d ago (Edited 5473d ago )

Hopefully they do attempt a third attack. Sony is a big economic power (being a big corporation)and will likely get governmental aid to help track cyber crimes and bring these criminals to justice. Hopefully there will be a nice trap waiting for them.

Wh15ky5473d ago

@MintBerryCrunch

"i dont understand why people continue to call these people "kids""

Because their antics are childish.

CryofSilence5473d ago (Edited 5473d ago )

I'm getting really tired of these kids who get their rocks off by hacking--whether it's Anonymous or not (I'm betting rogue Anons, should this be true). This is cyber terrorism and is punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison. Worth it? Well, that's for them to decide when they have to pick up the soap.

NatureOfLogic5473d ago (Edited 5473d ago )

sony why not let hacker have Other OS and CFW, none of this would be happening. Well sony this is what happens when you get hackers attention.

You asked for it.

pixelsword5473d ago (Edited 5473d ago )

This is how Orwellian laws are passed: when people get so sick of the ShXX that they WANT oppressive laws to be passed that prevent crap like this happening, and it works because if they passed a law jailing hackers for life now, I'm almost willing to say that you won't get too much resistance even though everyone loses; and the corporations ultimately win (which one or another is probably behind this anyways).

At any rate, they're blowing smoke: you can't breach new security unless it's actually available; then if they're breached they can talk (look at the OS hacks that stopped, for example).

@MintBerryCrunch:

The problem is that since the NSA and FEDS are on the case (which also means the CIA isn't too far behind) Anon doesn't want to get people who are basically amateur hackers who can't cover their tracks well to be hauled-in and possibly jailed for years or sued for lots of case for DDoS. Plus, Geo basically played everyone because when he hacked Apple he wanted a job then but didn't get one; so now since Geo's getting his payday he'll probably white-hat it until he sees another payday while his moronic disciples/fanatics will defend someone who basically abandoned him. Maybe we'll be lucky and some of these idiots will realize that, and if not, maybe we'll be luckier and Guantanamo Bay will be getting some new tenants; at this point I don't care which.

thorstein5473d ago

@ Mintberry

They left their calling card: We are Anonymous; We are Legion.

That is them. They know it and so does everyone else. Not to mention that they spoke of the attacks on 4Chan before it happened.

I also posted a blog here about the affects on Folding@Home. Anonymous have prevented PS3/ PSN users from using that App to help fight disease, scumbags.

1- DDoS of Sony's websites
2- Breach of PSN
3- The "planned" attack mentioned in this article

rabidpancakeburglar5473d ago

I'm not sure that the DDoS is counted as one of the attacks on Sony, I think the hacking of SOE in the last week is counted as the 2nd attack

playboi285473d ago

DDoS is an attack no matter how you look at it. From a network security standpoint, it iis clearly defined as an attack, not hacking, but undoubtedly an attack.

wsoutlaw875473d ago

The SOE was the same as the psn breach

thorstein5473d ago

The DDoS.... I didn't really consider that an "attack" in the same vein as the hack of PSN, I guess.

I believe Anonymous mentioned they are planning another one when the PSN issue blows over....

badz1495473d ago

that these hackers are those who JB their PS3! they were frustrated because they can't play online after FW3.60 and their friends with no JB are all laughing at them for it while happily playing online! this may have made them losing it and hack the PSN itself and now nobody can play online! I can see some of them are happy now with an evil grin and saying "now we're even!"

Whether it's 1, 2 or 3 attacks, these hackers need to F' the hell off! I'm getting sick of their petty childish games now!

This is all Geohotz and Anonymous' fault that all this s### is happening now. They bitched because other os was removed so they started this hacking crap. The PS3, Xbox 360 & Wii are GAMES CONSOLES. NoNeedForAName5473d ago

If Geohotz had never pissed with the PS3 in the first place then Sony would have never had to sue him, thus these "Anonymous" dickbags would have never gotten involved and more likely than not, none of this shit would have happened.

Father Time5473d ago

Apparently the PS3 was advertised as being able to play other OS's so I understand suing Sony in retaliation but this is completely unacceptable.

well they had a option to keep other OS they just wouldn't be able to get online
Simple as that ..
if u wanted both buy 2 ps3s :|
But the people complaining about OS being takin off after being advertised should be understanding of the reason it was took off
if they cant be understanding then thats on them .. That dont mean make all the rational thinking people suffer because your too ignorant

I'm willing to bet cash money that someone goes to prison over this.

Th FBI has handled some pretty serious hackers before. People who stole millions of dollars, and were from all over the world. Right now, all eyes are on this situation. Everybody is asking questions, and everybody wants answers.

With Congress barking up a storm, and tens of millions of people's personal information at risk, you can rest assured that the FBI will be knocking on a few basement dweller's doors within a week or two. Unless these hackers are damn serious about getting away and go on the run right now (preferably to another country).

I wonder if Sony had just left Geohotz alone if this would've still happened..I also wonder how much Sony has spent getting their networks going again and upgrading their systems.. Sony should've just left Geo alone and beefed up their systems now they're totally paying for their actions...

firetaw5473d ago

this is exacly the reversed thinking these bastards have. "why didnt they leave Geo alone, why didnt they just let them have there way with psn and there ps3. like there action was right from the beginning. you people think we should just bend over and take it?

"oh why didnt you just let your self take it in the ass, now its considered raping because you fought back"

Did they handle being hacked wrong? were they meant to leave the serveers up so everyones CC data could actualy be taken and possibly unencrypted? as if.

totally agree. kids are ridiculous now days where are the parents at.

xtremeimport5473d ago

Sony built its Ps3 online and some other services with the USER in mind. making an open platform so to not restrict users and developers(ex. Unreal tournament released a map pack for free on the Ps3 but had to charge for it on the xbox due for some reason regarding MS policy<i think>) and with all this recent events we dont deserve this kind of treatment from Sony on their next console. People have taken advantage of the other OS option, so they removed it and now they are taking advantage of the way PSN is design. granted it should be more secure regarding credit card numbers and other personal info, but it just pisses me off to read shit like this. You're pissed that some people could obtain personal info, so your retaliation is to do the same thing? how does that even make sense?! governments going after Sony for the info leaks, why arn't they looking for these people attacking them? cyber terrorism exists, get your priorities straight.

marioPSUC5473d ago

Actually this is helpful for Sony in a way. The hackers arent trying to steal credit card info, they are trying to show Sony and its customers how vulnerable it is to being hacked, and forcing them to fix this. If they were after credit cards they could have had got them, but they didnt.

darksied5473d ago

I know, right? What better way to be helpful than to cost a game company (one who already doesn't have the insane income of, say, MS by charging for it's online services) millions of dollars that could have gone into game development, new game systems research, hardware, etc. The nerve of Sony, those rich bastards.

TheOrion5473d ago

No they will just post your personal information worldwide so you become a bigger target of phishing scams etc.

Thats not helpful.

nnotdead5473d ago

it's shit like this that is going to allow governments all over the world to bring tighter regulations, and destroy the freedoms the internet brings to many.

right now US gov is looking down at Apple and Google for keeping tabs and tracking users, but what if these companys start using scare tactics to say they need more control and access? governments are not going to want to spend the money setting up a system that helps against this stuff, but large corporations who want to gain control and buy and sell your info certainly will.

fuck you for killing the internet one hack at a time.

all these PSN "hackers" - whether they are actually associated with the half-a$$ed circus known as Anonymous or not - are not fighting for any universal cause.

For if they did, they would recognize - again assuming that they are half-intelligent amphibians who have at least graduated from high school - that crippling a global gaming network like Playstation Network only hampers and only has a detrimental effect on the people (i.e. Gamers) who have the same prevalent, common interest as they do!

xAlmostPro5473d ago

Agreed dude, however as smart as hackers are with things like programming etc. they lack common sense.

Probably due to the lack of social life they have since they all hide in basements 24/7 365 because they're to busy hacking.

gamingdroid5473d ago

what do you mean there is no evidence ?
... The evidence is how they think and their actions
you can guess which gamers have a great social life and the ones who dont by how they think and act not by how much they play
same with hackers
and these hackers seem like low lives
no real father or loving husband with a good job would spend their time hacking a console trying to steal from innocent people

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.
