Sony Should Have Expected 'Consumer Retaliation,' Says Former Xbox Developer

A former Microsoft Xbox developer says the recent Sony PlayStation Network hack may have been the result of "consumer retaliation" for Sony's lawsuits against PS3 hackers.

"Going after individuals in a manner that may not stimulate good favor towards the company? That can result in consumer retaliation." said Johnny Chung Lee, a computer scientist who famously hacked a Nintendo Wiimote in 2008 and was hired by Microsoft to develop the Kinect. "You can't tell whether or not there's a causation between the two events, but it's hard not to believe that one was not related to the other."

movements5490d ago

I've seen no consumer retaliation, just some greedy girl from up North asking of a $1billion, monies I'm sure she won't collect. We just want psn back.

Joni-Ice5490d ago

Thanks dude, just saved me a mouth full.

frelyler5490d ago

I agree, he can't talk anyways after the RROD. Companies fail sometimes, at least Sony isn't charging $150 to get back the use of PSN like M$ initially did with that mess.

crzyjackbauer5490d ago

oh STFU sony charged me $150+tax+shipping for my 60gb YLOD
MS took care of the RROD my buddy even got a few free games from MS
meanwhile i had to wait 6 months after sony got hammered with YLODs to get a decent deal for my broken 60gb

xTruthx5490d ago (Edited 5490d ago )

They had to give out the 3 year warranty, if not they would have been sued for releasing a faulty product to the market. If they didn't do that 3 year warranty they would of had to do a product recall which would of probably killed the xbox

frelyler5490d ago

No, I won't STFU. I bought a launch 360, after six months of light use the DVD drive died. It was not covered under warranty and I had to save up to buy the damn thing as it was. I traded the broken pos to Gamestop while the employee berated me about trading a 360 for a ps3. Little did he know the drive worked for long enough to load a game and play 5 minutes, then it would die. I took my money, bought and bought a ps3. That was in 2007 and I still have that backwards compatible ps3 which has seen heavy use and still works, never needed repairs. I also fail to understand the waiting six months for a decent deal on your 60gb ps3 comment. Not to mention a monkey could fix the soldering issue. I'm sorry but the facts in my situation gave me an opinion which I am entitled to, as are you. Sony hardly got hammered by the YLOD as well, when you compare the failure rate of 360s, which still have issues to this day. It is unacceptable. 360 has some awesome games and I was not trying to bash the software. I was bashing the company for putting out a rushed very low quality piece of hardware. I got burned and learned my lesson. My situation with the 360 as with everyone else was in the majority of users, 30% failure rate. Whereas your situation is the minority, with a 7% failure rate I believe ( if it was even that high).

undercovrr5490d ago

@jackbauer

I was just going to say that :). At least MS admits their RROD issue, Sony doesn't. No warranty, no coverage, nothing.

gamingdroid5490d ago (Edited 5490d ago )

Now MS is no saint, but MS actually refunded people that had original paid for repairs and extended the warranty to 3-years.

Contrast that with when Sony got hit with a lawsuit for their optical drive in PS2, they settled agreeing to pay max $30 to anyone that still has the receipt then screwed over all the customers that was affected. No refund on fees paid for repairs, no extended warranty and no free fixes for a known defect!

Still that doesn't relieve MS of their responsibility, but they paid a billion for that mistake.

death2smoochie5490d ago (Edited 5490d ago )

Oh least you forget.
Sony charged EVERYONE for DRM with the PS2+shipping charges to fix it...until they were sued in a class action lawsuit. It was the main reason Sony was sued....and settled.
The PS2 Disk drive was a POS like the Disk Drive in the PS1...And both of those had almost similar issues. Over heating. Warping. Not playing disks.
Took Sony two generations to fix that mess.
A ELECTRONICS COMPANY THAT ACTUALLY MAKES IT OWN ELECTRONICS AND DOES NOT FARM IT OUT LIKE MS AND APPLE AND OTHER COMPANIES!
The PS3 was built fantastic and solid. SOny did a stand up job with the design and structure of the PS3. But it took Sony two generations to finally get it right.

Now the only reason MS extended the Warranty WAS to avoid being sued like Sony. So yes, MS did not exactly do this out of the kindness of their hearts, MS and like most companies are not "nice" BUT at least they did.
Sony never did this with the design flaw for DRM until 2006 when they settled the lawsuit and were forced to.
As for your broken died dvd in your 6 month Xbox360. It comes with a 1 year manufactures warrenty that covers your issue. If where you bought it did not cover it, you should have SHIPPED IT TO MS.
@GAMINGDROID

LOL. I just posted this when you did LOL

crzyjackbauer5490d ago

@frelyler
DUDE i payed $675 total for my ps3 thats with tax and fees
i called sony up the first time and they asked me for $250 for repair.
now is that fair to me? paying almost $700 for a ps3 that breaks 8 months after the
warranty expires and sony doesent want to do ish about it? i've been loyal to sony
since PS1 but that just took the cake, go on youtube and check for yourself
type in YLOD this thing is becoming more common among all ps3s even slims

frelyler5490d ago

You are lying about the $250. Why do you have to lie to make a point. Also, if you want to play the numbers game the 360 is by far raping people the most with over priced hard drives and peripherals. Please stop lying about how much you had to pay to repair your ps3, you just sound stupid.

They screwed us over, they put our credit card details at risk and were too slow in reacting to the attack.

As soon as PSN comes back online i'm deleting my Debit card info and never using it on there again.

I'll be buying PSN cards from now on.

Cardenjs5490d ago (Edited 5490d ago )

how you believe Sony should have reacted

"Hay guys, sorry for shutting down your PSN, your credit card info may have been stolen, we don't know for sure but we believe you should think that until we know for sure."

Ill probably start using PSN cards too, not because of the hack but because its too tempting just to hit the "Add Funds" button

QuodEratDemonstrandm5490d ago

Good thinking. I've never used anything but PSN cards.

Hagaf225490d ago

@ cardenjs- I wish Sony would have had better protection in the first place. From what I've read it was fairly simple to have the network- which is the problem. If it would have been a difficult process with proper security it would be different- but from what I read it wasn't a difficult task to do.

harrisk9545490d ago

You were using your DEBIT card?? Here's a tip... Use a CREDIT card in the future and you are completely and totally protected. You are not responsible for any unauthorized charges and you will be credited for them. With a debit card, it is more of a pain because your actual bank account is accessed. Seriously, I would never use my debit card for any online purchases.

Andy, by the way, so far there have ZERO reports from credit card companies that there have been any fraudulent charges. Just unsubstantiated reports from some kids on forums.

Daver5490d ago

I'll continue to use my credit card.. People think their soul is in a credit card lol it doesnt change anything, you are covered for that kind of thing so theres nothing to be afraid of..

If you can't get PSN cards then use pre-paid credit cards. A useful tip for those in regions who can't get PSN cards.

What?. So Sony should have just let hackers do whatever they want illegally with Sony's copyrighted software?.

If MS dosen't have the guts to draw the line then that's fine. They can bow to these cyber thieves/terrorist if they like.

I for one am glad with Sony's stance. Far to many companies don't stand their ground.

To me having PSN down is not anywhere near as important as standing against cyber bullies/terrorist/thieves like Sony have.

clintos595490d ago

Totally agree. MS takes the easy way out by just paying the hackers off or hiring them. Amazing how u can just hire a criminal, makes me wonder or money can also buy the media, especially seeing how there are way more articles of sony & psn being breached then there are of bin laden on the whole internet. Anyone else notice that? Just shows u how much impact a great company like sony has in the gaming industry.

death2smoochie5490d ago

The FBI does this all the time and the CIA. Hire the criminals that exploit the system. They are the best at catching the thieves...because they are thieves.
It's smart because in the end catching these cyber crooks is very hard. Having them work for you and knowing how they think is the better solution and is why many companies hire them.

Raoh5490d ago

LOL the only people making noise about this is crappy sites looking for hits, greedy people looking for a payout and xbox fanboys..

Its been said before that majority of playstation gamers are the older crowd. Majority of my friends never used credit card info on their psn. most have a separate email and password from their psn and banking info.

Not many are worried at all. and many have offline games to finish and trophies to earn.

Maybe the younger xbox community would freak out over loss of online services but i grew up playing offline games longer than i have online games.

Johnny Jiron5490d ago

I know many don't read the articles before commenting, but really no one even reads the excerpt anymore either?

You're jumping on MS over a guys comments who only worked their briefly for Kinect stuff and now works at Google.

Then I see comments misreading consumer retaliation as the consumers afterwards when he's talking about the attackers themselves struck back after the geohot stuff.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8519d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele18d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk18d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10119d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit18d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg18d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10118d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14918d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle31d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit31d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog32d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog32d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad32d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_32d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage32d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda31d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
