Is Apple preparing a game console?

Might be looking at it with a new AppleTV-like box
The rumors are once again finding their way to us from a number of sources suggesting that Apple is apparently again looking at the possibility of offering their own gaming console of some type.

The reason for this is apparently that Apple would like to further expand the iOS platform; and it comes as no surprise that the majority of the best selling applications for the iOS platform happen to be games, and this is something that Apple maybe didn’t think was going to happen, but it has.

Apple’s best ticket into a gaming console of some sort is said to be a very robust and upgraded AppleTV box that would apparently use the A5 processor, which would yield somewhere between five times to as much as seven times the horsepower seen in the previous generations. That could be the ticket for Apple to move into this space.

I hope so. And that console looks good...I know it's a mockup..

EYEamNUMBER15414d ago

why would you hope so?
what would apple have to offer that 1 of the other 3 doesn't already? (besides an overpriced console)

NukaCola5414d ago

I think Apple would do a D2D/STEAM kind of thing, but it would mostly be App Ports and maybe something like OnLive. I see of it as an added feature to a future AppleTV box, not a full fledge game system.

tehpees35414d ago

Wasn't Pippin a game console?

Stevo915414d ago (Edited 5414d ago )

Whats the matter with apple making a console? more competition the better imo, there not gonna force people to buy it..

qface645414d ago

@Stevo91

tell that to the 1970's

RankFTW5414d ago

wasn't that flop the aplple tv also supposed to act like a game console? how did that turn out?

Led-Zeppelin5414d ago

It sold millions, but still not supposed to be a console.

warrior99885414d ago

then we'd get a new version every year with very high price tag so little changes

MostJadedGamer5414d ago

4 consoles would not be good for the market. Unless either Sony or MS leaves it would not at all be a good idea for apple to enter the market.

lelo2play5414d ago

"Is Apple preparing a game console?"

... and it will cost 1000€

jammy_705414d ago

I'll tell ya something!!! N4g needs an app for iPod/ iPhone/ pad....

the_union_of_PS3605414d ago

Yes they do!!! My pc is broke and I'm using my iPhone and the website lags a lot

iamtehpwn5414d ago

Apple already has a console. It's called iPhone. iOS devices (iphone, ipad, itouch) are Apples gaming platform, and will continue to be.

Blaze9295414d ago

a game system with a new version every year? no thanks

Spitfire_Riggz5414d ago

They already have a gaming console... the MAC!!! AAAAAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Sorry that was too funny

slavish35414d ago

Be nice to have more then 3, hope so!!!!!!!

omi25p5414d ago

hope not, they would release a new one every year it will have 1 new feature and they will charge full retail price, then 6 months later release the same thing in white and still sell thousands...

Emilio_Estevez5414d ago

idk about this idea. Competition is always good, but apple I just don't know if it is.

MostJadedGamer5414d ago

As far as video games consoles go competition is NOT awlays good. 4 consoles is just too many, and it divides the market too much. It would NOT be good for either the industry or for gamers.

White-Sharingan5414d ago

What are you talking about? Why can TV's have dozens of brands, phones, blu-ray players, computers, etc. yet video game consoles can't?

Having more big companies making consoles would mean that the big three will need to be more aggressive, better prices, more games.

It would really hurt 3rd parties because it would force them to either take on the added expense, and resources of developing for more consoles or force them to lose out on profits in developing for less consoles in a more fragmented market with smaller console userbases since the pie would be split 4 ways instead of 3.

As for gamers it forces them to either buy, and support more consoles or miss out on games.

Basically it means more 3rd party companies going out of business, and less games for gamers. It would be terrible for the industry, and for gamers.

The best thing for the video game industry, and for gamers would be to only have 2 consoles. That would be the perfect number.

White-Sharingan5413d ago

@MostJadedGamer- By your theory, it would be best for everyone to have only one consoles in the business. Why would you say two? look at sony and microsoft, they both started at very high numbers and practically didn't even budge their prices, especially taking into account that the Wii was also being sold.

"It would really hurt 3rd parties because it would force them to either take on the added expense, and resources of developing for more consoles or force them to lose out on profits in developing for less consoles in a more fragmented market with smaller console userbases since the pie would be split 4 ways instead of 3. "

-The market isn't entirely that predictable. It also depends on what group of people the company making the console is aiming for. Look at the wii, such high numbers in sale, but poor third party sales, unless they are party games. Also, sometimes for some reason, exclusive games sell more compared to their multiplatform brothers.

I don't see why adding one more platform to the race would affect third parties. Last generations third party devs would make their games on all three consoles, since all three consoles were pretty equal in graphical power (I am aware that Xbox>GCN>PS2, but only slightly), but this generation most are just releasing and developing their games on two platforms, 360 and PS3. Devs weren't suffering back then when they developed for three consoles, I don't see why they can't do it right now. They can also go the lazy route and just port the games, its not like they aren't doing that right now.

rabidpancakeburglar5414d ago

If they are then it'll be good to have another console option but I suspect it would be a fail console

Epic: Mobile Gaming Business "Largely Broken," Says "Dysfunction" Due to 30% Tax From Apple, Google

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney notes that the mobile gaming industry is "largely broken," and blames the 30% tax levied by Apple and Google.

Christopher556d ago

Man has been saying this for ages and knows full well the only thing he wants is more money at Apple and Google's expense and absolutely none of this will result in lower prices for the consumer.

Tacoboto556d ago

He expects the digital equivalent of opening up his own store inside of a Walmart or Target. It's absurd.

And he feels absolutely entitled to it, in a too-big-to-fail sense - because Unreal Engine is used by so many developers, banning Epic would hurt those developers relying on their tech, which would be super unfair to the developers.

Notellin556d ago

Thank goodness you are there to defend the small guys Google and Apple. You're so brave, Christopher!

Christopher555d ago

Yeah, I'm totally defending Apple and Google and not explaining how another company is just as greedy. That's the big takeaway from my comment, Apple and Google good, only Epic bad. Yup. I totally didn't make it about the fact that this man just wants more money and isn't doing it for the consumers. Nope. Not that at all. I'm just praising up Big Tech. They're my one and only love in life. Please recognize me Big Tech Senpai!

VersusDMC556d ago

The epic games store charges a 12% tax and has been losing money for 5 years...that sounds dysfunctional.

gerbintosh555d ago

They are only losing money because Steam has a stranglehold on the market.

Christopher555d ago

It's a play to attempt to win over the market so they can then realign pricing with what Steam has in the long run. The problem is they are doing only that and not actually building a better software supported platform on PC. Essentially, they're throwing money at the problem, not actually trying to compete by providing better service.

Epic Says They Spent $1B in Fight Against Apple & Google, "Small Price to Pay" for Freedom of Market

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney revealed that they have spent $1 billion fighting Apple and Google but adds it's a "smam price" to pay for freedom.

BeHunted559d ago (Edited 559d ago )

Fortnite on the Google Play Store would've generated over $1 billion in percentage fees for Google. Smart move.

1nsomniac559d ago (Edited 559d ago )

I buy most my pc games through epic now. Don’t get me wrong I love steam and steam has had a lot of my money for the work they put into the platform. But i like what Epic are fighting for and they’ve been open about it from the very beginning. I wish they would sort out their verify/repair files option for when you format your drives. The whole rename/redownload hack is an absolutely awful archaic solution.

Tacoboto559d ago

They've been open about how they so openly violate the terms of the platforms they distribute on.

They spent over a billion on legal battles, and also had significant layoffs. Maybe they should cater to their employees first before forcing governments to add more regulations for industries governments just do not understand. The EU DMA - Apple's policies and lawyers have made a mockery of it every step of the way.

And back when they openly and proudly violated Apple's policies, they tried using Fortnite to coerce its players (including children) to rally against Apple's 30% fee.

Which is the same 30% fee console makers apply, but Epic has no problem with that! Epic isn't fighting for you, they're fighting for themselves and don't mind siphoning the money they get from Unreal, even if it results in layoffs.

1nsomniac559d ago

First of all you’re wrong, but second of all you clearly don’t know an awful lot about what you’re talking about.

Tacoboto559d ago

Epic proudly violated Apple's terms by introducing their own payment option in Fortnite. Fact. That's literally what started this. Epic then went on to put banners in Fortnite as a not-so-subtle call-to-arms against Apple.
Epic also violated console terms by enabling cross-platform play in Fortnite. Fact.
Epic cut 800 jobs a year ago. Fact.

Epic sucks, their engine is too big for them to fail and they know it, so they're using that to subsidize their legal battles against Apple and their attempts to rally international governments into creating regulations based on what *they* want.

phoenixwing558d ago

Epics launcher is a piece of crap compared to steams. In fact every launcher so far is crap compared to it. The only reason epic has any traction is they literally give away games in order to drive a user base.

anast559d ago

They have some good semi-giveaways.

KwietStorm_BLM559d ago

They'll make that back in a fortnight.
