Sony Hack Challenges Games Industry

The news that Sony has allowed the personal details of 77 million customers to be obtained by an “external intrusion” has sent shivers through the games industry.

The burning question is whether the fallout from this security fiasco will be limited to Sony, or whether it will spread into the wider market for digital downloads of games.

* Forums and comment threads are full of angry PlayStation Network owners threatening to boycott Sony and all of its products, or to migrate to Microsoft’s Xbox Live service instead.

I lol at that statement if this were true wouldn't we already be seeing news about people trading in their ps3??I bet 1/5 people saying that probably will but other's are just saying it to go with the crowd people are so full of themselves.

I dare someone to prove me wrong??

Edit:@Below yea i seen the article but i meant to say how many people have actually done it??

HeretoSpeakTheTruth5495d ago

i dont know if its true but i forget what the store was but there was a Article on N4g about it i think it was gamestation where you can trade your ps3 and get a xbox i dont really think People have done it but who knows

xAlmostPro5495d ago

They didn't allow anything to be obtained.. seriously this bullshit needs to stop..

Yeah sony's security could have been better but that's it people are acting like 77million people had all info stolen and are now bankrupt when in fact ZERO people have suffered from hackers using their details etc so far..

nickjkl5495d ago

i hate how these articles make it seem like sony put the details out there on purpose

like sony took all your information made a document and released it to the public

when they had their seurity system broken into by an outside source

XRider5495d ago

Why don't some of you head on over to the Sony forums and start reading the angry owners post? Seriously go there first before you start saying it isn't that bad.

''The news that Sony has allowed the personal details of 77 million customers to be obtained by an “external intrusion” has sent shivers through the games industry. ''

Sony has allowed? Or PS3 Hackers has allowed?

HeretoSpeakTheTruth5495d ago

the first line in the article says sony has allowed it i dont know thats what it says

The news that Sony has allowed the personal details of 77 million customers to be obtained by an “external intrusion” has sent shivers through the games industry.

rajman5495d ago

Yes they allowed it, because their security was cracked by a bunch of hackers, and Sony came out and said personal details (including name, address, login ID & passwords etc) was not encrypted. If it was encrypted then the hackers wouldnt have got hold if it, like they couldnt with credit card details.

HeretoSpeakTheTruth5495d ago (Edited 5495d ago )

i dont know but you cant put 100 percent of the blame on sony if PSN wasnt hacked then nothing would of been taken

xAlmostPro5495d ago (Edited 5495d ago )

That's still not them allowing it.. without hacking you can't obtain the un encrypted data.. so yes and no..

They should have encrypted all information but at the same time i bet you don't use the encryption option on your facebook which has your name and date of birth etc.

finnhima5495d ago

No they didn't allow it to happen. The information was encrypted. They said that themselves. All this article including many others are just some FUD spreading idiotic opinion pieces who don't even acknowledge the REAL culprits at hand of the fiasco.

You idiots make gaming so sickening.

rajman5495d ago (Edited 5495d ago )

@ finnhima
What nonsense have you been reading huh? Here's a direct quote from Sony
"All of the data was protected, and access was restricted both physically and through the perimeter and security of the network. The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken. The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack."
PERSONAL DATA WAS NOT ENCRYPTED!

gamingdroid5495d ago (Edited 5495d ago )

Allow (among other things) means:

"to make a possibility"

So Sony did "allow" it, by making it possible.

The question really everyone is asking is Sony to blame and the answer is yes! Is the hackers to blame yes!

Your credit card information is likely safe, because they encrypted it (hopefully in a secure manner), but your sensitive information such as username, password and date of birth was not.

It takes two to jingle, so they are both guilty and customers are the victim!

Allowed them by not securing them good enough.

dale15495d ago

having both consoles doesn,t affect me.phoned the credit card company they don,t seem to bothered and have plans in place for miss use should they even need it.same happened with xbox live but they cancelled my card when this happened .this time round it was just be careful, with all the bad press against sony seems a bit sad that ms got some sort of free pass when it happened to them

to say sony let this happen is the stupidest thing i've seen on this site.and im a nintendo fan!!so i read stupid stuff about nintendo everyday.

B1663r5495d ago

email addresses and passwords were unencrypted. FULL STOP. Both of those should have been stored in hash form on this particular network.

That means, that if you use the same password everywhere, as most people do, your email account is now compromised in addition to your PSN account.

With a ~tiny~ amount of concern Sony could have prevented those two data points from being compromised.

Sony screwed up huge. Just deal.

cyclonus0075495d ago

If you use the same password for PSN that you use for email, then you allowed your email to get unnecessarily exposed. Everyone knows you aren't supposed to use the exact same password across multiple accounts for this exact reason.

MysticStrummer5495d ago

Don't bother, cyclonus. It doesn't matter that most of the information the hackers obtained can be found in a phonebook. It doesn't matter that XBL, Google, Amazon, Mastercard, the FBI, and the Pentagon have all been hacked. It only matters to some that it happened to Sony, and B1663r falls squarely into that category. They either want to believe that Sony will go away now and quit the gaming business, or they want to fool others into thinking so. It ain't gonna happen, so just chill and wait for PSN to return.

Silly gameAr5495d ago

@MysticStummer

agreed. It's insane to see how many people are coming out of the woodwork claiming that this is the end of the Playstation. It may be a pretty hard blow to Sony, but it won't destroy the PS brand.

Rolling the Dice: Do Modern RPGs Miss the Point of Team-Based Play?

It seems it was long time ago. A bunch of friends spending hours on end playing RPG games, sitting around the table with the box of cold pizza. Excited about the story, listening to the Game Master, they were completely engaged in the worlds only visible to them and their imaginations.

The GM is the programmer, and in MMOs and co-ops, you can play with others. If you want to ONLY use your imagination for the visuals, read a book.

1) Hope they put it on disc this time.
2) Hope this is a positive for Neptune coming over as well.

Demons Souls5820d ago

If so, that's being developed & published by Idea Factory. Compile Heart has nothing to do with it (Thank God for that).

Godmars2905820d ago (Edited 5820d ago )

Thought Compile Heart was one of the companies lending characters.

Was also speaking in general as in regards to a US of Neptune. If these guys are offing a second game, NIS or Atlus, both of whom offer quirkier titles, will put that one out.

@kagon01:
My issue isn't - wholly - with the DL-only option, but the price. The first game should be $30. Maybe $40, and by that I mean $39.99. The only reason its $45 is the 360 disc version which has extras. Nevermind that by all rights its a PS2 game. Something that proabbly could have been done if the devs had the GOW2 engine or tools.

ClownBelt5820d ago

I approve of this god damn message.

Could have gotten my 60 bucks if they just put it on a disc.

Jack-Pyro5820d ago

Is this a half decent SRPG, porn aside, cause if it is, i might just decide to go and buy it for the 360.

Anon73495820d ago

There's no porn just some sexual innuendos but that's it.

Also it is a great game by itself, maybe not graphically but everything else is top tier.

RedDevils5819d ago

so it had some kind of "top tier" porn story jk

ThanatosDMC5820d ago

Yup, it's a decent game. I just hate that a move has to go first before any attack options.
