Ubisoft Can Beat Out EA/Activision

Despite their respective reputations in the gaming industry, EA and Activision have remained on top. Together, the two publishers control some of the most popular franchises in multiple genres, from Call of Duty and Mass Effect, to Command and Conquer and the reasonably popular Marvel franchise titles; many of the buzzworthy AAA titles that occur year after year are backed by these two industry titans. Staying on top means keeping a tight reign on your respective franchises, and neither EA or Activision have a sole claim to creativity in the industry. Ubisoft have let the two publishing giants know recently that they're gunning for the number one position, something achieved through power of sales alone. It's certainly a respectable boast for any developer or publisher to make, but can it ever be more than just that? Is it possible for Ubisoft to actually overtake its two major competitors and hold that coveted number one spot?

Regardless of whether they can top EA or not, the are power house that seem to be growing at a bloody amazing rate!

We have companies like EA/Activision who seem to pump out shooters every few months, then we have Ubisoft who won't announce a shooter in years. I WANT MY NEXT RAINBOW SIX!

It might just be my immaturity but I keep think that the title should say beat off

ubi definitely has some of the franchises to make a push, but the amount of resources they throw a single title (supposedly 200+ person teams) makes me skeptical they can get their costs under control and aggressively expand.

dude I watched bonus round on GT and they mentioned that 900 people worked on AC:Brotherhood

well what other IP's do they have?

they chopped up Rainbow six and Far Cry and fed it to the console gamer. The pc fanbase is all but gone for these two franchises. They will always be shadows of their former selves even in next-gen.
what is done can not be undone. It's like adding too much sugar to the koolaid.

They've over-saturated the market with Prince of Persia games. This IP is still profitable however. If Ubisoft wants to keep PoP alive they should be working on a next-gen PoP and shoot for it being a launch title for next-gen systems.

Assassins Creed is their strongest IP. I imagine AC3 will do well but it won't be winning any awards. It will be one of the games the end the console cycle as the next-gen bug and hype begins to grow.

It won't survive should Ubisoft just decide to up the resolution, textures, and AA and try to continue where they left off without major engine advancements.

see I can be an armchair analyst. I'm going to bookmark this though I've been on a hot streak.

Yes as long they make proper sequells for Far Cry, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon ,Rainbow Six, Prince of Persia and Assassins Creed.

I can't sit here and act like I know these workers financial situations. And I'm sure nobody wakes up WANTING to go to court. But for the sake of the industry, I wish some of these types of cases made it to trial.

Settlements allow companies to continue to do whatever abusive practices they do. While the trials (should the company lose) would actually force real changes for the better.

But again, I'm not in these workers shoes and I can understand them not wanting to risk it.
