"Consolization" Of Games

With the consoles of this current generation stepping up to HD resolutions and putting serious focus on online gaming, many of their games are now being shared with the PC. The positive side being that no matter what platform you are using it’s very likely a chance you will still be able to play that upcoming game which the public and your friends all seem to be talking about. The potential negative though is that there may be a noticeable drop in quality when the developer has to focus on many different platforms instead of optimizing and building for just one from the ground up. May it be graphics, controls, user interface and so on, as one platform might not handle a certain thing as well as the other.

Consolisation exists and it is damaging PC games.

Assassin Nawabi5504d ago

but you can't blame devs for this when they know they can't make enough money by making pc centric games

Pandamobile5504d ago

There's still tons of money to be made off PC games. They may not sell as much in terms of pure volume, but the fact that the profit margins per game sold on Steam/D2D/Impulse/etc are 2-4x higher than at retail means that you can still make a shit-ton of money off your game.

dedicatedtogamers5504d ago

So-called "consolization" is a joke. It's like arcade gamers getting mad that their precious games are being made for consoles.

"Consolization" has been around since the days of the NES, and PC wasn't dying then. If "consolization" is the excuse that PC is dying now, that simply does not make sense.

Get outta here with the NO money on the PC crap. Minecraft sold 2 million units in it's Beta format with NO Commercials No publisher and the Dev gets all the money. Please take a business class.

PC= NO Commercials. No licensing Fees. Many Devs make games from their own budgets therefore no Loans from Publishers. Sure a few big name titles Starcraft/WOW have commercials but WOW makes $30 to $80 million a month so they can afford it.

so in turn a high budget PC game selling 2 million copies generate $ 100 million in cash. This is split between Steam/Dev for Digital copies or Publisher/Dev/Store for retail copies. The publishers pays for the retail copies to be made and anything over 90k retail sold is profit.
Two Worlds II has quietly sold 2 million on the PC while the console versions have bricked. TW3 will be made because of good PC sales.

Consoles = Huge advertising budgets and commercials are not free. if you see a game commercial during prime time programming then their advertisement budget was $150 million. Publisher front Devs the cash to make games and that has to be paid back. Retailers may get $10 to $15 per game out of that $60 bucks. Licensing fees to M$/Sony have to be paid so therefore a high budget game made on both the 360 and PS3 needs to do 4 million to break even and see a good profit.

Crysis 2, Homefront, Bulletstorm are ALL 1.5 million or lower across 3 platforms with weekly sales declining rapidly. Dead Space 2 just broke 2 million. These games had huge add campaigns and Crysis 2 had an expensive DEv time due to new engine and these games so far are FINANCIAL failures.

It's easier to make money on the PC but the consoles do have those 2 or 3 games that sale 15 million copies. COD, GTA, and Halo and GT over 5 million every time out are the only exceptions while most Devs/publishers see those numbers, chase them and FAIL.

anyway a MMO with 500K users paying $10 is 50 million a month not including micro-transactions which bring in more cash.

GameGambits5504d ago

Not true. You can look at World of Warcraft which is probably the game that's made the most money in the last 5+ years and it's PC only.

Gamers will go to where a quality game is no matter the platform. These games are the console sellers.

It'd be nice to see developers make games that take advantage of each hardware. Start on PC, and scale back down to consoles. If they always followed this route then I think more people would be willing to invest in a gaming PC which pays in spades.

only reason for consolization= rampant piracy of pc games

movements5504d ago

Yeah. Devs need to recoup lost cash!

Pandamobile5504d ago

And one of the most popular reasons for piracy is "I'm not going to support some developer that doesn't actually put effort into the PC version of x"

koehler835504d ago

That's an excuse, not a reason.

Piracy was at its worst before consoles and PCs were even comparable, at the beginning of the last generation of consoles.

Devs aren't "falling back on consoles". Consoles caught up to devs. There aren't many groups of people who have the technical, artistic and financial prowess to create a game that truly could not be realized on console.

Those who have claimed they can, have or would have been full of shit every time.

Motion5504d ago

The excuse is the reason.

mrv3215504d ago

Minecraft made sold 2 million
Starcraft 2 5 million
World of Warcrat has 10 million active users
World of tanks many millions

Developers don't make pure PC games because there's little point, the 360 uses a X600 chip, programming for it require little work, a port is easy and cheap and will go to 40 million. Microsoft and Sony will advertise for you, E3 you'll receive coverage, there's no 1 PC guy to advertise.

hennessey865504d ago

is it not enough that you have the best version of multiplats and the best looking game ever made in crysis. I do get why your a bit annoyed with crysis 2 but i was really happy that cryisis 2 came too consoles because i cant afford a decent pc so i was extattic. You cant have everything your own way. Battlefield 3 is another exsample of you getting the far superiour game. So give us console guys a break.

NovusTerminus5504d ago

Okay, I am gonna say this I have played console games my entire life, The main reason PC gaming has fallen for now is piracy, not alot of people are buying the games.

Call of Duty hit it big with the frat boys so it went more "mainstream" and thus just went to buggy online gaming because no one is asking for me.

I liked Dragon Age Origins. DA2 was not "Consolized" it got a one year turn time which meant they did not get to work on it enough to flesh it out.

bumnut5504d ago

I think the main reason is greed, multiplat = more money

money talks

ATiElite5504d ago

Mincraft is 2 million in it's beta format
Starcraft 2 did 3 million day 1. The retail version has sold 3.3 million copies while the Digital version is sure to be over 10 million.
BC2 PC sold more than the 360/PS3 version
Two Worlds 2 did over 2 million
Rift had a million units sold and subscribers DAY 1.
Indie game Amnesia Dark Descent is at 500k
Cataclysm did over 2 million day 1
i could on and on about MMO's and micro transactions

Yes your correct PC gamers are NOT buying cheap console ports but PC specific games do very well.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio21d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing21d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9221d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit21d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing21d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9221d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
