Isn't it tiring waiting all day for an update, and when we do get it, it basically tell us to wait some more. Waiting is pointless, the psn will be online when it's online.

One thing I've realized from all of this is that single player games are boring..

im just asking to get some views from other ps3 owners who use psn online , say psn is down for 3 weeks to a month and it comes back up with nothing revamped or new at all ... would anyone be slightly annoyed or not ? this is a huge oppurtuniuty for them to improve xmb while its down id say

Yea well this is nice the people who say oh we shouldnt get anything from this can stfu. Its been a week and I have no psn and no 360. As for sony not telling us anything we at least deserve a game 3 months to psn plus or something. I'm not paying for psn but I have to pay for the games and the internet to connect to it and the ps3 being my media powerhouse I can't do anything but lose money. Oh the single player games....yea when you beat them already its hard to pick it back up. And here come the flamers I have a pc but its not in the room my ps3 is in so that is null and void. Love film doesn't wrk hulu doesn't work the music service doesn't work. And the games I did download and was playin until this morning now all of sudden don't work. At least microsoft could still go online and play during their 2 week outage I can't. Funny thing is if sony keeps this up they will go the way of the dreamcast. Ok, I've seen a bunch of speculation of why people think PSN is down, and I thought I should just post what the community knows in comparison to what Sony is telling everyone. The truth is, there was a new CFW (custom firmware) released known as Rebug ( http://rebug.me). It essentially turns a retail console into a dev console (not fully, but gives you a lot of the same options that usually dev's only have access to). Anyway, this new CFW was quickly figured out by 3rd parties (not Rebug) to give CFW users access to the PSN network again via the dev networks. With a little manipulation of the URL's through a proxy server you could get your hacked console back online. Not that big of a deal, right? Well, it also turns out that some people over at NGU found out that you could provide fake CC# info and the authenticity of the information was never checked as you were on Sony's private developer PSN network (essentially a network that Sony trusted). What happened next was extreme piracy of PSN content. Sony realizing the issue here shut down the network. Now, before you go freaking out about the latest information posted about Kotaku, no ones personal information was accessible via this hack. Not to say they couldn't get it, but no one is admitting to it being available. Anyway, that's the real reason for the PSN downtime. Sony is now rebuilding all of it's PSN servers to be more secure and (hopefully) make sure the CFW users cannot get online anymore.

Edit #1: To those of you saying that this is speculation, you are correct. But, it is speculation based on a lot of facts and the outcome seems to make the most sense.
1. Rebug was released on 3/31/11.
2. First guides of how to use the dev network to get back on COD games on 4/3/11. 3. Word of "shady" sites finding a way to pirate PSN content via the dev networks on 4/7/11 (basing this on posts I had to delete on the website). 4. PSN goes down on 4/20/11

Now, you can believe Sony's PR team which has kept you completely in the dark, or you can see the list of events above and come to your own conclusion. Now, this isn't the first time Sony has fought back against the PS3 modders from getting on PSN. A couple of months ago we had a utility called f*ckPSN that changed the necessary header information that was being sent to Sony to allow modified consoles back online. We were able to use it for about a month. Then came the new TOS, the mass e-mail to PS3 customers, and software update 3.56 and 3.60. So, once again, yes this is all speculation, but it is speculation based on previous actions and known facts.

Edit #2: Mathieulh just mentioned that he has been in contact with someone that has official access to the SCE devnet servers and it was posted to them today that only 3.60+ debug firmwares will be allowed on the dev network anymore. All earlier versions will be cut. If you want to retain your access you need to contact Sony and upgrade to 3.60 debug firmware.

I have been reading all of these PSN articles, even though I am an 360 only owner, in an effort to give any "xbots" crap for trolling. However, the proponderance of comment sections, really seem to be lacking the vitriol I expected. So, that begs the question, If XBL was going into its second week of outage, would the comment sections be as free from negative remarks from the "opposing" camp? My altruistic side, really hopes that would be the case, but based on how much MS hate seems to flow freely here on N4G, I am not so sure.
Again, I hope PSN returns, better than before, for all of you being deprived of doing what you love?

This is ridiculous if its going to take weeks and weeks for it to be back online. The PS3 is probably going to lose popularity over this more than likely, especially since people have a very short memory.

This is definitely not looking good for Sony and their supporters/gamers/devs. I have a feeling that the longer this issue goes unresolved, devs may start to jump ship.

I know Sony is going to come back stronger than ever when they get back online. I've seen it happen before and I just know they won't let me down. Take your time Sony you are the best at everything, ever... no matter what happens we're here for you.

SONY PS3 is still my fav choice of gaming/entertainment console..... what doesn't destroy the PS3 def makes it stronger. Now the engineers will rebuild & focus on strengthening the system. Hackers are SOL when the PS3 goes back online. Just like CINAVIA imbedded in sound of movies. I dunno about you guys, but I'd much rather have my 360 die on me than have the entire online Playstation userbase have their identities compromised.

I would have never imagined this after the RROD fiasco, but Sony actually takes the FAIL crown from MS. Busted toy vs. possible credit card fraud? Yeah, argue that one.

See Sony, if you would charge for your online service, you might have had people in place to monitor for this kind of crap.

lol it does work that way. Simply put an add on which its own creators and investors have no idea how to fully utilize doesnt have much of a choice but to let the creative mind get their hands on it.

A network with peoples personal information however is a different thing entirely, one which no company not even M$ will trust aynone with. Kinect and xboxlive are two different products with two different structure and purposes.

The move is like the kinect available for people to mess with, xboxlive and psn aren't for a very good reason.

And the only reason why windows is still regarded as the OS of os's it because its the one with biggest market share in the world, it would be detrimental for many business to just switch their platforms. That sort of thing would take years and cost millions to sort out.
Hm The mac os is becoming the standard in a lot of the colleges and universities for obvious reasons. Not that its un-hackable as no such thing exists in this pirate filled world of ours.
But i suppose due to its smaller audience its a more secure platform than that of MS.

Wanted anyone who can release information about the hackers who hack sony network should report them. Hacking is cool to help a friend who lost there password and need help retrieving it but attacking someone network and stealing information is uncool. They confirm that our credit card information have been hacked, but the hackers don't have our 3 digit code on the back of our cards. Hope they find these a**hole hackers man. Sony f**ked up big time.. They knew this information had been breached and that hackers probably had access to people's credit card details wayy earlier than this, they just didn't tell the public, who's right it is to know!

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
