I wonder why it took almost a week for them to release this warning.

LORD-PHOENIX5491d ago

for ruining our online playtime....obviously the bias part of the media wont highlight that fact.

anyway aslong as sony fix this so those lowlife hackers cannot ruin PSN again ....ill wait

JD_Shadow5491d ago

Without even the LEAST bit of a question as to why Sony is being so quiet about any detail of this, and why it took them THIS long to even get THIS out? You'd think we would be hearing about this sort of thing a week ago (when this first happened).

But it's been down since Wednesday, we heard about what was the issue (as a very vague explanation that left more than the normal "we can't divulge what others could use to their advantage" stuff), and now, ONLY now, we hear that they've just now sent the devs the memo that something even HAPPENED to PSN.

Devs response should be, "NO SHIT, SHERLOCK!"

The "biased" media you're pointing out is asking the exact same questions the people outside of the loony PS3 and 360 fanboy legions are asking:

- Why little to no transparency? I know Sony's trying to protect PSN and all, but surely you can divulge SOMETHING else as to what the hell is going on here other than redundant info that we've heard about a week ago.
- Why didn't they try to find these holes in the first damn play? We can blame hackers all we want for exploiting the holes, but out of all of this time the system wasn't hacked, and Sony didn't ONCE FIND this big of a hole? Did they just not want us to know that this sort of hole existed so they didn't have to fix it? Should you be blamed for a robbery if you didn't lock the door to your house? Answer: Partially, yes you are!
- Is Sony using the hacking/piracy scene as an excuse to close off things that they never wanted to have open to begin with? Ken really, REALLY wanted Linux on the PS3's, but he isn't around anymore, so the vision has probably changed, and outside of this loony fanboy legion, the lot of us questioned why a small security hole warranted complete nuking of the feature. If fanboys didn't care about Linux on the PS3, why are they bitching that others care, and why are they hoping and preying that no one ever unlocks the feature or that Sony never reinstates it? They didn't care to USE it, but they sure as hell care about not wanting others to have that option again (using any excuse in the book, too).

And yet, you're coming on here and making a comment like THAT? C'mon!

Dark power

This is not a blog, write that wall on your blog, whose going to read that nonsense`?

LORD-PHOENIX5491d ago

troll articles and this is my first comment on the whole episode.

ive read its a hack, credit card information was at risk thats all i need to know mate.

its not the end of the world as some sites may have you believe, its an inconvenience ...but a necessary one....alot of people have misdirected their anger and seriously need to chill out

rockleex5491d ago (Edited 5491d ago )

Umm, shouldn't this already have become obvious that developers wouldn't be able to use PSN just like the rest of us?

Sony already said the whole of PSN is being taken down while they fix it.

I think this message is just in case some developers thought PSN being taken down only affected normal users.

Either that or this message has already been up for awhile but websites have just found out about it.

I_find_it_funny5491d ago

this is taking too long

MWong5491d ago

We all knew it was a hack. This is what a lot of people were afraid of when they hacked the PS3, we knew the PSN was next.

Muerte24945491d ago

This is why Sony shut down PSN. To an extent, it did involve credit card numbers but they were fraudulent ones. The hack allowed them to put a retail ps3 into "Dev debug" mode. This allowed them to access PSN and use fake credit card numbers. Since it's in "dev" mode, PSN didn't bother to check the credit card information. The hacker went on a downloading frenzy until Sony finally closed the flood gates. Sony is now forcing all developers to update to firmware 3.60 if they haven't already.
To all you GEOHOtz supporters, how is this helping the people? Only thing "real" hackers wanted from linux on ps3, was access to the GPU. Geohotz didn't even make the initial breakthrough. It was a hacking team overseas and HOTz took credit for it. This is why games are becoming more expensive now.

Death5491d ago

Marketing 101: plausible deniability. When you screw something up, always blame someone else. Blaming the hackers was the best way to take heat off of Sony. Maybe it was the hackers, maybe not. I personally haven't seen one shred of proof that hackers are responsible for PSN being down. Sony first said they didn't have a clue why PSN went down and then days later claimed they shut it down due to an external intrusion on the network. One of those statements is clearly a lie which reduces the credibility of the other greatly.

The only thing we know is PSN is down. We also now know they are telling devs it's "emergency maintenance". We can not determine the reason with this information. A rational person will wait to light the torches until more validated information is released.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5491d ago

More bad reputation for PS3 Hackers, this wouldn't happen if they didn't get involved.

ChrisGTR15491d ago

lol thats what happens when u eff with hackers.

gamingdroid5491d ago

I wonder why they release such a crappy warning! "Emergency Shutdown" just makes it sound a lot worse than it might be and needless to say, it only causes fear and doubt.

Sony really need help with how they manage their communication during "emergencies"!

rockleex5491d ago

"lol thats what happens when u eff with hackers."

Yea. Like the hackers were planning on just sitting around doing nothing after they've successfully hacked the PS3.

Sony had to combat the hackers because a situation like this was an inevitable outcome once the PS3 was hacked. Sooner or later, a hacker would target the PSN and its content.

Sony ended up merely delaying it.

zag5491d ago

When something gets hacked like a bank etc and data for credit cards or enough ID to make your own account from someone else's ID to get credit cards.

The banks generally don't say anything and you'll never hear about that bank being hacked.

People here just think oh it's just the game servers hacked, it might not be.

What Anon don't understand is sure you can DDoS, hack and protest and other such things, but that doesn't mean other people won't hack it for their own purposes.

Really the Russian Mafia could have also hacked it under the guise of Anon, why not you have other people saying they are hacking in anyway so perfect time to do what you want.

I think this is one of those times people might not like to hear what has been hacked or actually taken.

It also could be Dev account details and people changing the data so Sony is paying into completely different accounts.

InfectedDK5491d ago

THIS IS JUST IN!
OFF TOPIC BUT EMAILS ARE BEING SENT TO ALL PSN USERS! I JUST SPOKE WITH SONY DENMARK.

I used Google translate:
SCEE will shortly send an email out to all PSN users. PSN was subjected to an attack by an external hacker militia and SCEE themselves have taken the PSN down before more damage was done. When we send out email to more than 77,000,000 users, there might be some time before everyone receives it. It will be a deepening of the situation at present, why Sony have acted as they have done and what is currently done to PSN coming up and running again. It is obviously not in any way in Sony's interest to PSN is down, but it is certainly unfortunate but necessary. @ Martin-We have just had a meeting at SCEE about the situation and will of course inform you - our users - first. Therefore, it is perhaps not out anywhere else yet.

2v15491d ago

may b they wanted to b sure what the problem was ..

LunaticBrandon5491d ago

@LORD-PHOENIX

Anger should be directed at both parties. Had Anonymous not done what they did you would still be gaming through an unsecured service. Sony's reaction shows something far worse than a DDoS could have happened.

Legion5491d ago

@gamingdroid

Kind of makes you miss the President Bush moments of sitting stupified when hearing that planes crashed into the Trade Center. Now that deserved an emergency moment responce, yet we just got the rest of the childrens story.

Sony's reaction to all of this has been rather poor when it comes to media realtions. Expecting to see some Sony official jumping onto the sword and quitting on this media flub.

I've seen that message since Saturday that its under maintenance. Anyway if they need the time to completely sure it up go for it, im now catching up on some other games that don't require online play.

To me this down time is blessing in disguise for me lol.

Blaze9295491d ago

i wonder if this is effecting development of any games with multiplayer

ECM0NEY5491d ago

Its effecting the update process of DCUO on PS3 and PC.

jke825491d ago (Edited 5491d ago )

@ death

they didnt know when it first happened, discovering a true intrusion on the network probably did take them a day or two, hence the second statement that came out where they had said they had an intrusion, then they do emergency maintenance to fix said intrusion problem....

it works in a logical order shit happens how can it be sonys fault when the hacker is the one that caused the shit storm thats like me breaking in to your house and robbing you blind yet everyone says its your fault..

Legion5491d ago

From reports the intrusion itself didn't take the network down. It was taken down internally for security. No reports of hackers actually taking the network down have been presented from Sony. Only that data has possibly been compromised. If this is the case then the intital statement of them NOT knowing why it went down is not accurate.

Bad analogy due to your house not having an outside stake in it. (i.e where is the reference to Sony customers?)

Better analogy might be McDonald's closing down and lights turned off then telling customers they didn't know why the lights are not working, and then coming out and making a statement that they were broken into the night before and are investigating the breakin. See that the breakin had nothing to do with the lights being turned off and the store closed directly. McDonld's turned off their own lights and locked their doors... not the thieves. Thus the media fowl up we are getting here. They either new about it or not... they can't have it both ways.

Lykon5491d ago

lord phoenix...i was hating anonymous, but after having looked into it I think they do a lot of good activism for eg in their defence of wikileaks . I do not agree with their attacking PSN in defence of geohot at all I think he is a self publicising smart arse, but I like the idea of the people power behind the group and agree with most of the stuff they do. The individuals that make up anonymous (basically anyone who wants to join in) are not necessarily pirating games either.

awi59515491d ago

Man i bet sony wished they never removed alternate OS now man these hackers are pissed.

akanote5491d ago

While this sucks If this turns out to be true, I wouldn't put it past a revamped psn or possible new features. For those who say no your dumb sony wouldn't do that in this time frame. Well microsoft revamped there dashboard an basically said something new is coming then it did, with no downtime. Who's to say sony hasn't been working on something, which by the way they've stated they have been, for new features anyway. In the end its all just speculation an assumptions either way revamped psn, new features, or just all security I can wait an be happy either way.

cyborg69715491d ago

Yeah right, sure, your close to being correct but the fatal flaw in your theory is that it's not true.

How do you get longer than a week out of "emergency maintenance"? not saying it wont be just don't how you came to that conclusion.

Haha I was just about to say that.

Plus, this doesn't really give us any new information. Seems to be a little more honest though.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle9d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga18d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199217d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga17d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box18d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion17d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7218d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7517d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit17d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14918d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7718d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
