Rumor: PSN hackers attacked Admin Dev accounts; services returning in a day or two

PSU writes: "A source with close connections to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe reports that the attack to the PlayStation Network may be a bit deeper than originally reported by Sony. According to the source, who wishes to remain anonymous, the PSN sustained a LOIC attack (which created a denial-of-service attack) that damaged the server. There was also a concentrated attack on the PlayStation servers holding account information. In addition, “Admin Dev accounts were breached.”"

Why USA? Americans are not buying the ps3 like the japanese and europeans are...

LOGICWINS5516d ago

Don't know why your getting disagrees. Everything in your comment is factual evidence.

AntoineDcoolette5516d ago

I'd personally like to see reliable statistics. Its probably due to the generalization that he made about no Americans purchasing PS3s when its a flat out lie.

LOGICWINS5516d ago

^^Ummm..where did he say that "no Americans are purchasing PS3s"?

AntoineDcoolette5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

read it again and tell me how it doesn't sound like a generalization. PS3 has sold more units in USA than Japan it just has a lower consumer to population ratio than Japan and is harder to distribute due to the large size of the nation.

Again I'd like to see a legitimate trust worthy source. I'd even take Sony's word themselves above that of any user on this site.

XRider5516d ago

AntoineDcoolette you have an internet browser and you're asking for facts?

rockleex5516d ago

You know what?

While PSN is down, you could try your hand at the MOST DIFFICULT GAME EVER!

For a glimpse of what the game is about and how hard it is, plus tons of laughter, check this Youtube video out.

BattleAxe5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

Actually they should restore access to Canada first.......just because. Then maybe the Americans would blame us for something else.

kuroukage5515d ago (Edited 5515d ago )

Canada is the U.S.'s hat.

mendicant5515d ago

@AntoineDcoolette,

I don't think you can simply dismiss this so easily by stating that:

"PS3 has sold more units in USA than Japan it just has a lower consumer to population ratio than Japan and is harder to distribute due to the large size of the nation."

I would argue that this is somewhat true in one case and false in another.

While it is true that our larger nation of 360+ million have purchased more PS3's than that of Japan, if you compare that to the number of people who are gamers and the number of Americans who previously owned a PS2 but didn't upgrade, that figure becomes moot. Let alone considering the paultry number of PS3 owners in America versus the overall previous stated popultion. Said density isn't an excuse.

Your second point really doesn't make sense. The size of the country has little to no basis in a modern industrial supply side economic soiety. Goods of all types, perishable or not, make it across the country daily. Using a mix of transportation systems, if there is a consumer drive for it, the powers that be will get it to you...for the right price of course. The size of the nation has absolutely nothing to do with anything. We overnight documents for crying out loud.

@warprincess
Whats different about the cyber terrorist multi account sony fanboys here at N4G and these freedom fighters that have brought down PSN? Doesn't each have their own way putting out false propaganda? Maybe the FBI should round up some of the proxy using Sony fanatics here at N4G. Do you think that will happen?

Brosy5515d ago

Maybe if the Sony fanatics here at N4G hadn't bad mouthed and name called members of Anonymous you wouldn't be waiting. Thank the internet tough guys for PSN being down. I mean how stupid do you have to be. Maybe you shouldn't call the person with their finger on the trigger names.

Wow this is some serious stuff. If true the source is right. People do deserve to know what is going on. As mad as I am, whats pissing me off even more is the very vague and lack of info Sony is dishing out. This makes me feel a whole lot more informed, however true or not it might be.

lee_ten5516d ago

...if you ran a company like that and there was a service attack, would you blab everything out to the public to tarnish your reputation?

i'm sure sony has their reasons for not going public with this and once they fix everything, they'll give the rundown on the situation. i'm just glad my ps3 died before this happened because i would have been very upset as well.

IMChampion5516d ago

You misunderstand, I don't expect them to come out and tell the world what is happening, that would be dumb on their part. I'm just saying giving useful info would be appreciated more than giving vague ones.

lee_ten5516d ago

guess i did. sorry. :[

sdtarm5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

@IMCChampion

what could've they tell us?

CommonSense5516d ago

your comment makes no sense. you're glad your ps3 died because if it hadn't you'd be upset? that makes no sense. shouldn't you be upset about it dying? i dunno about you, but i'd rather have a working system that i can play offline, than a broken one that i can't play at all.

darksied5515d ago

The thing about releasing more information than is necessary is that things can backfire. They don't want to release the actual attack details because who knows? Maybe other people will see this as a sign of weakness and attack them again. Let them fix it first an then we'll see if they're willing to share. I don't think many people will care once the PSN is back up.

rdgneoz35516d ago

@Warprincess The FBI is going after them.

Columbo5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

Except the video is really from January 2011 when the whole Wiki Leaks and Mastercard DDOS stuff was going on. This has nothing to do with Sony or PSN. The youtube uploader falsely titled the video. You can tell by the news scrolling across the bottom of the screen.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8533d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele32d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk32d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10133d ago (Edited 33d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit32d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg32d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10132d ago (Edited 32d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14932d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle45d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit45d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog46d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog46d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad46d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_46d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage46d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda45d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
