DICE: Battlefield 3 PS3 & Xbox 360 Version Will be The Same

There’s been a lot of talk regarding Battlefield 3′s PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 differences ever since the shooter was confirmed. All the footage that has been released for the title has come from the PC version only. Now DICE themselves stated that the PS3 and Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3 will be the same.

Ve3tro5516d ago

Believe it when I see it.

CYBERSNAKE5516d ago

Yeah don't worry, the majority of users here on N4G will run several screenshot comparision tests just to make sure.

blitz06235516d ago

That's what they all say

darthv725516d ago

and the good devs actually achieve that statement.

Commander_TK5516d ago

Hopefully they don't pull a Crytek. Either way, Crysis 2 is the best looking game of all time.

theonlylolking5516d ago

With lensoftruth not having the right PS3 settings.

Gaming bolt using pictures from a youtube vid.

A google translated website takes a long time to load.

Then we have digital foundry who gets it right.

Pixel_Pusher5516d ago

If they say it'll be up to par then that's what it'll be both BFBC2 versions were identical so no worries.

nveenio5516d ago

I hate hearing that...especially after seeing how great Portal 2 looks on PS3. But, I'm getting BF3 for PC anyway. My rig needs a workout no one else can seem to provide *cough*Crytek*cough*.

Sam Fisher5515d ago

@Pixel_Pusher - i completely agree, dice delivers when it comes to battlefield, all of them are great, and i cant wait to play this bad mother@#$%er

Kleptic5515d ago

the article clearly states something different than the title...

He says that all platforms will share the same assets...meaning animation, lighting models, textures (though that doesn't matter because the resolutions will be different), physics, etc...

thats the end of the 'same' statement...the PC will obviously be capable of utilizing 'more' of these given assets at any given time...while the 360 and PS3 versions will have to work around less ram...

Being this was an interview with an Xbox site, or something, it is convenient that the PS3 being the lead console platform was left out...but this article brought it back...DICE already stated how well the FB2.0 engine is doing on the PS3...

PR is PR, so none of it really matters...I just downloaded the 12 min. trailer on the PSN...the game does look incredible, but it STILL has short cuts that are visible (flash light not making real shadows, reflection on ACOG just being a city skyline when outside, not a dynamic reflection, etc.)...I'm not nitpicking, i'm just saying that after the shock of the incredible particle effects wears off a little, it doesn't seem quite as out of reach for the consoles...the res will be down, the particle effects muted a little (although BF1 and2 had incredible particle effects on consoles also), but everything else (lighting, animation, physics shown so far) have already been done on consoles...the PC version will obviously be untouchable...but there is a great chance that this could be one of the best looking shooters on either console as well...and that is saying something...

lil Titan5515d ago

so both will have the same 24 online huh...BOO!!! wish id knew if i just had b!t#hed like pc players about not having alot of online players maybe ill be better.

Jezuz5516d ago

why do you care? Just play the game

i_like_ff75516d ago

This.

Jesus christ you babies need to stop bitching over a little lighter contrast.

theonlylolking5516d ago

Why should I pay for the same game but get a inferior product? If it is a hardware limitation then I am fine with that.

Kurt Russell5516d ago

You shouldn't Lolking. But this game hasn't even been made yet, so you shouldn't be wasting your time on what ifs either.

blumatt5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

I could care less, personally. I'm just stoked for the game. See y'all on the battlefield!! Right now I'm replaying BC2 online to get back into the feel of Battlefield. Anyone want to play with me? PSN: blumatt

ok electricshadow

electricshadow5516d ago

I'll add you right now. My PSN I.D.'s the same as my username.

miyamoto5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

In essence maybe.

I just downloaded the Fault Line trailer last night and all I can say is its fantastic!

If DICE & EA really want to push the envelop with FPS genre on all platforms here is what they should do:

Do the darnest BEST on Battlefield 3 on each platform PC, PS3 or 360 to the maximum specs time will allow.

In this way both game maker and gamer would be very happy with their respective version knowing that DICE & EA has pushed their gaming machine to the maximum output and performance.

We know all platforms can deliver high quality game experiences but the game can never be called the "same", "identical" or "equal".

But what matters is that 10 years from now DICE, EA & gamers will look back with no regrets.

DontShoot-Me-Bro5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

I thought they said they will be pushing every platform to its limit.

So why don't they? several people have said that PS3 has more power compared to the 360, most recently that Carmack guy said the PS3 has more raw performance.

So obviously DICE are not pushing the PS3 as far as they can otherwise it wouldn't be the same as the 360.

PirosThe4th5516d ago

Most programmers are known as lazy. In the sense that they want to go through the fastest easiest way of doing something, this applies on the code they write but the PS3 is not for lazy programmers but for dedicated ones. Even though lazy programmers are the best ones Carmack is one of the best yet he only likes dev friendly consoles but who wouldn't?
The ps3 is indeed more powerful but sometimes devs don't have money and resources as much as 1st party devs have. Deadlines and stuff you know...

But for this one I don't care about the Ps3 ver. I am sure the best way of playing this game is PC!!

Perjoss5516d ago

I don't like it when I hear people calling devs lazy. It's well known that devs often work crazy hours plus weekends to make sure a game is as good as it can be on release day for yours and my enjoyment.

DaTruth5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

Technically it's not laziness; it is just that they don't want to make three somewhat different games when they could make one game and get three times the cash!

I personally don't like this because when an exclusive developer makes a game, they get the profits from one platform and any multiplat dev could get the same from each version of their game. But instead they get greedy and try to make three times the cash.

They could reuse so much from platform to platform saving tons of time and money for each game while still guaranteeing the best experience for all their customers by giving them a product built for their respective machine, but alas...

Edit: I was wondering what all the hoopla was about for the past few weeks. I recently saw the video off PSN... WOOOOWWWW!

gypsygib5516d ago

DICE wouldn't want to piss of the 360 users by making a better looking PS3 version.

360 will probably have 65% of the sales.

hesido5515d ago

If you cared to read publications.dice.se , you would see how they are utilizing Ps3's spu's to a great extent. They have PS3 specific papers there, and almost every paper related to frostbite 2 also mentions spu based computing for that task.

With this information, I would have thought the PS3 version would edge out among the console versions, and frankly I'm a little surprised. I'm not THAT surprised tho. RSX is PS3's worst feature, and the cell has to make up for its deficiencies. If RSX was as good as Xenos, it'd be whole different story.

Gamer_Z5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

Common Dice show some pictures already I want to see how the damn game will look on consoles!!!

Anyways I was expecting them to squeeze out a little more juice from the PS3 and Cell but I guess they are going to take the easy route and just make them the same (that sucks). PC is truly the way to go, too bad it costs an arm and leg to build the perfect gaming system :(

SixShotCop5516d ago

Forget screenshots! I want to see the game in motion, running on consoles.

Vherostar5515d ago

Am I the only one on N4G who does not give a crap about this sort of stuff?? I mean these days when it comes to games that are developed well the only difference is the consoles outputs e.g. lighting etc.. Plus the games look great on both consoles the last game to look great on 1 consoles and TERRIBLE on another was FFXIII. The rest are either extremely similar or so near nobody gives a crap.

HardCover5515d ago

I'll believe it because I don't care.

The console versions can duke it out all they want. I'll be playing it on PC without a care in the world.

Both gimped? Compared to what? PC?

Spinal5516d ago

ROFL that made me laugh hard man looool.

Words have never been more true. :)

The_Nameless_One5515d ago

As a console gamer I fully agree with you. Not only we are getting a gimped version of the full game but we also have to pay $10 more for it. It's amazing to me how most console gamers are just fine with with that. No wonder Publishers and Developers think most people are dumb as 2x4.

xtremegamerage5516d ago

Thanks DICE, now i'll be getting the PC version then.

Newtype5516d ago

Why would you go with otherwise?

phinch5516d ago

Because not everyone has a pc that can handle games, mine barley handles the internet

Silly gameAr5516d ago

I'm not a PC gamer, so I'll gladly accept the console version. It's sure to be an awesome game either way.

BlackKnight5516d ago

Barely handles the internet? What is it? A 300 dollar laptop back from 2005? Even those can do websites.....

Shepherd 2145516d ago

he was trying to be funny by saying his comp cant handle internet. but he really means that bf3 and many other games are too much for it.

BlackKnight5515d ago (Edited 5515d ago )

I get it was a sort of joke. All I am saying is BF3 requires windows vista/7, which has a BIGGER install base than XP now. And all you need is a dx10 video card at MINIMUM. BF3 might require a powerful PC to run it as good as the videos you have seen, but you can still get a good medium range PC and play the game at much higher details than consoles.

You can get a decent DX11 card for 99 bucks after mail-in rebate:
http://www.newegg.com/Produ...

That card does the FIRST Crysis (more intense than Crysis 2) at 1080P on high settings and gets 30+FPS. I am just saying PC gaming is NOT NEARLY as expensive as console fanboys try to say (PS, I own all systems). A 600 dollar rig will DESTROY consoles. You don't NEED to buy a 2000 dollar PC. One of those will be for doing MULTI-TV/MULTI-GPU. That is a whole other tier of PC gaming.

hoops5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

You should have opted for the PC version regardless.
The Xbox360 and PS3 version lack DX11 and a host of other things that the PC has.

BeastlyRig5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

lol PC is the only version I pre ordered! There are no other options as far as Im concerned..

I heart amazon..

According to page 80 of Dice's Gdc 2011 slide the console version doesn't even have fully dynamic lighting..

Vherostar5515d ago

If you had a powerful PC enough to play a superior version of a game why would you get the console version anyway? I mean you obviously spent a fortune to play these games then you expect me to believe you would have bought the ps3 or 360 version?? PLEASE! You either prefer a PC or you don't its as simple as that its not all about graphics it's about affordability and control system.

tommy-cronin5516d ago

doesn't matter either way, still getting it on ps3 even if it looks "slightly" worse on it, i just wanna play the fucking thing

MGRogue20175516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

No, there will be a few "differences"..

DigitalFoundry will be the ones to reveal all of 'em after comparing each version shortly after the game's launch.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

Fishy Fingers5516d ago

And the fact that many times it requires pain stacking effort to find said 'differencies' implies they're not great enough to have any impact on anyone experience.

MGRogue20175516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

Are you kidding me? Have you seen the PS3 version of Mafia II...?

missing grass, missing blood effects & missing motion blur

Also, Red Dead Redemption as well (missing "stuff", lower frame-rate, lower resolution)

Whether anyone likes it or not, there's bound to be technical "differences" between the two versions of Battlefield 3.

@ Fishy Fingers: Yes it did. Luckily I own both consoles & I played that game on the 360 instead.

@ phinch: Rockstar Games aren't lazy developers

Fishy Fingers5516d ago

Like I said, 'many times', for every multiplat showing extreme differences such as M2, there will be a ton that only show minor.

Oh, and you are right though, the lack of grass really effected the overall experience didnt it?

phinch5516d ago

@ enkeixpree , missing grass? that's nothing to do with the console, its called lazy developing

baodeus5516d ago

Seriously, most game look similar on both consoles. Why are we keep arguing about such stupid thing like missing grass.....and here i though everyone are self proclaim gamer. It doesn't make any sense to me.

@phinch
I think your statement is lazy. Perhaps asking why like these:

Why it is that large open games usually suffer on ps3 (lower resolution, lower frame, missing grass LOL, for example)?

Why it is that smaller corridor game, heavily scripted and linear game doing so well on Ps3?

If you don't ask question, u not gonna try and find the answer. Are u just gonna make a lazy statement and never bother to find out why?

baodeus5516d ago (Edited 5516d ago )

so then u guys are saying the shortage and divided RAM doesn't interfere with open game development for ps3?

Do unloading works to spu require Ram?

Can Spu do everything without consuming up resources?

Can spu multitask or only handle a specific function?

Can spu display images or showing what u see on the screen or is that based on graphic card?

What do u need to display everything on the screen that u see? Is RAM required for this process or spu can do everything?

So how does coding work using the spu? Can you write one single code and tell each of the spu to carry out those functions, or do you have to code them separatedly for each spu?

Where have u seen best graphics on ps3 games, on open world game or strictly scripted linear game like KZ, GoW, UC?

Do making a scripted game help sony 1st developer know exactly where to put their resources and thus maximizing the output of their games? Can those same methods apply to dynamic game where things changes?

Does Sony put 100% into helping 3rd party with the ps3 architech?

Why do Sony asking 3rd party developers opinion on how to make their next gen console. If ps3 is so powerful as you guys say, why not keep it (cheaper price, powerful tech, who need new next gen right?)

There u have to ask that questions and see if developer are lazy or not, or because there are problems that hindering them from doing so.

Anyone that actually know anything about ps3 tech can help me answer some of these questions? I mean i really wanted to know how that works.

GraySnake5515d ago (Edited 5515d ago )

@ above

InFamous 2 says hi.

oh you want to read on spu tech and how it can help?
http://www.slideshare.net/D...

here you go

baodeus5515d ago (Edited 5515d ago )

@graysnake
1. Thanks, U just help me prove that developers aren't lazy as Phinch said with your attachment. Dice utilize a lot of spu tech for battlefield 3, catering specifically to ps3's hardware (the main reason why many fanboy claims 3rd party as being lazy for not using ps3 spu for development). In addition, u know Dice have to work w/ 3 platforms not just one like Sony 1st party did. Saying they are lazy is just BS.

2. This is my question: "Do making a scripted game help sony 1st developer know exactly where to put their resources and thus maximizing the output of their games? Can those same methods apply to dynamic game where things changes?"

So is battlefield 3 an open/sandbox type of games or just linear like anything else? Each type of games require different approach right or the same can be apply to everygame? Perhaps posting how suckerpunch develop for infamous would be better in this case rather then simply posting "infamous say hi."

3. How is infamous better (more depth, details, scale, etc...) than GTA4, RDR, Assassin creed/ oblivion/ Just cause ?

4. Would u think infamous is more in line with prototype where destruction is the main focus, but lack that details, depth, and scale seen in those other games i mentioned? How about compare infamous to prototype instead?

"infamous say hi" doesn't explain anything about why ps3 can handle open world game much better than other consoles and the limited RAM isn't a hindrance?

Thanks for the link though, it was quite informative. Great read.

Battlefield 3 Cut Missions From Campaign Detailed by Former DICE Dev

Battlefield 3's former Lead Designer has revealed that there were two cut missions from the main campaign

Get rid of campaigns, move the game to mobile, and try to compete with warzone. They would save time and money.
