How Portal 2 Changed Gaming Forever

MMGN writes: While Portal 2 may be a shining example of how games should be, it also marks a place as one of the most important games this generation. Valve have manged to implement cross-platform multiplayer that is not only seamless, but also integral to the success of the title.

Seriously, Portal 2 is the best game since like... Portal...

theonlylolking5519d ago

Portal 2 is the best game valve has ever made and will ever make until portal 3.

hellerphant5519d ago

HAHA Portal 2 is such a great game, but just think of the possibilities now that STEAM is cross-platform compatible

ardivt5519d ago

maybe reading the article would help you finding the answer.
small hint: it's about "cross platforming" other games like "Borderlands, Crysis 2 and of course Call Of Duty: Black Ops."

chak_5519d ago

yeah yeah keep dreaming.

Portal 2 is alright with pads and m/kb playing at the same time, but don't even think about playing COD or BF with players on PC, you would cry all the tears you could.

Seriously, while it's technologically possible, I don't think it will happen again, except if it's a valve made game with some kind of slow place.

humbleopinion5519d ago

ardivt,
I read the article. From reading it, it seems that the way Portal will change gaming forever is by implementing a cross platforming feature that already existed in previous games like Shadowrun (that the article itself mentions).

I don't know - it seems like fail logic to me. If other games adopt cross platforming (something which is purely speculative), shouldn't the "changed gaming forver" be attributed to the game that actually pioneered this?

mercenarie5519d ago

not sure how the author would create such an article as its too early to examine the impacts of a STEAM enabled console game.. we should however notice the impact in a few years

hellerphant5519d ago

When you think about it regardless whether STEAM is used in the future for cross-platform gaming or not, Portal 2 is the first title to prove that it can be done, and done very successfully. No matter the future of STEAM and consoles, this title has paved the way for future services to enrich gaming.

KDubyah5519d ago

As humbleopinion said above, Portal 2 isn't the first title to do so..
Shadowrun did cross-platform multiplayer before even Portal was around.
However, as far as being 'done very successfully' maybe Portal 2 did so.

Regardless, it would be neat for more games to implement this feature.

Is it really that good? I swear to god if I go and buy this tomorrow and it isn't evolutionary i'm gonna be pretty pissed. It's like...the highest rated game this gen? Anyone who has it....is it really 9.6/10(overall rating atm with 81 reviews)? Or overrated a bit?

hellerphant5519d ago

In all honesty the humour is witty and great, the story is subtle and doesn't smash you in the face like a Call of Duty. It's different to most other games out there on the market.

If you like puzzle games and want a decent co-op experience it would be hard not to recommend this great game :)

Personally I'd give it a 9.0/10

Close_Second5519d ago

Its just the hype machine doing overtime again. Is it the best FPS puzzle game out there...yes (its probably the only one). Is it revolutionary in any other way what so ever. Nope.

Honestly, in 6 weeks time no one will care. Bring on Skyrim.

hellerphant5519d ago

I disagree with that comment. It's not necessarily the game play that sets Portal 2 ahead of the pack it's the narrative and the way it goes about things.

Rather than holding your hand with a big compass saying GO HERE and telling you exactly what to do Portal 2 leaves you to your own devices. It gives you all the tools to complete the challenge, and lets you work out the rest your own way.

Some of the puzzles you will breeze through, others you will sit there forever trying to work it out and then when you finally do, feel like an idiot as the answer was staring you in the face.

Each puzzle has a sense of accomplishment as you complete it, something many other games simply lack.

As for the comedic value, it's worthy of a purchase just for the dialogue.

Close_Second5519d ago

Adventure games have been doing that for years so nothing new here.

NBT915519d ago

Honestly... The love for the first Game is making people overrate this one, I think.

It is evolutionary in that it is an FPS Game that does not even have a single weapon (besides the Portal Gun itself). If you did not play the first, it is worth trying but I do not think the slow pace (compared to action heavy FPS shooters) is going to be everyones cup of tea to be honest.

Valve responds to NY Attorney General lawsuit

Valve has responded to New York Attorney General Letitia James' lawsuit against the firm, stating it does not believe that lootboxes in its Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2 games unlawfully encourage minors to gamble, adding it was "disappointed" to see the action go ahead despite efforts to "educate" the NYAG about virtual items since "early 2023."
