Volition: Doing Destruction Is Hard, Really Hard

The first Red Faction title appeared quite a while ago, and even then the destruction present was rather impressive. But despite the amount of time that's passed, nobody else has really tried to emulate it.

I don't know how they compare, but BF3's looking pretty darn good. It'll be interesting to see how well it plays out in Armageddon.

I remember reading an article before Gears of War 2 was released that EPIC really wanted to implement destruction in Gears 2 but I think the console could not handle the power needed to implement it? I recall seeing a PC demo where if you were on the 3 floor you could shoot or blast your way to the 2nd floor.

Also wasn't Killzone 3 suppose to have destruction in it?

Hardedge5514d ago

I don't think it did. KZ2 had some destruction, but mostly just cosmetic stuff. Nothing on the level of BF or RF. KZ3 was all just set pieces.

haha takes a lot to destroy things! Excited to see if their "hard work" pays off :-)

I dont know about you guys BUT i love Volition!
They are great developers! Cant wait for Saints Row: The Third and the new red faction!

jony_dols5514d ago

They are definetely THQ's best devs.

They are miles superior to THQ's other cash cow Kaos studios, thats for sure.

bozebo5514d ago

red faction 1 had the only good destruction in a red faction game

bumnut5514d ago

what about guerilla ? the destruction on that was pretty cool

Jellzy5514d ago

The destruction was only let down (IMO) by poor physics.

The game was too floaty at times, and the fact that a 10 story building could be held up but a single pipe in some cases ruines the immersion.

Was a really good game though and I'd have rather a sequel to it, rather than the game there working on.

jony_dols5514d ago

I think that Volition explained after Guerilla's release, that they purposely left the games physics slightly 'floaty', because there is less gravity on the surface of Mars than there is on Earth.

But maybe thats an excuse for bad programming...

Who knows?

But all I know is that I enjoyed Guerilla, so thats all that counts!

kancerkid5514d ago

RFG has the best destruction in a game, bar none.

So you can't dig holes (yawn), BIG DEAL!

bozebo5514d ago

well, red faction 1 was the only one with proper destruction. Not manually scripted/edited in destruction (like bfbc2)

andron5514d ago

The destruction was great, but the gameplay could have been better. It got boring after a while...
