Graphics: Do they really make a game good?

We look at games and graphics, and see where they improve the game, where they hinder them and where it doesn't matter.

It depends on the game.

randomprodinc5538d ago

Yeah. That's what the article is about. What games do you think benefit from good graphics?

Jio5538d ago

Exactly, anyways, the kind of game would be simulators, FPS (usually), or if it adds to the atmosphere of a game.

Kee5537d ago

Yeah, it does depend on the game.
I think the article should be renamed to:
"Do graphics always make a game good?"
Because they don't. If a game sucks, but has nice graphics, the game still sucks.
Conversely,
if a game is good, but has bad graphics, it might turn people away from it but it's still an enjoyable game.

Scyrus5537d ago

thats like saying do good art make a drawing better? makes no sense, dumb question

JLeVRT5537d ago

I'd rather have graphics over gameplay (hence the reason i dont like Nintendo that much...)

bumnut5537d ago

Im a graphics whore but admit that graphics alone can't result in a good game .

Why play something with crap gameplay just because the graphics are good? games are meant to be fun.

Graphics can make a good game great but can't make a bad game good.

MerkinMax5537d ago

I was so excited to get Crysis 2 on my Xbox. I played through the campaign once, played about 15 multiplayer matched and now I am selling it. The game just isn't fluid and the pop in is disgusting. It was a game meant for those with powerful PCs and consoles struggle with it which ruins the gameplay.

That's what we have written about. The pros and cons of developing good graphics.

InTheKnow5537d ago (Edited 5537d ago )

.
If you want to talk about graphics, talk about graphics. Comparing one game to another is nothing more than showing your ignorant bias.

The Halo comment in particularly reeks of butthurt fanboyism... " The one thing to note here, is compared to current games, the graphics are awful. But AT THE TIME they were great "

REALLY, " at the time "? Do you mean 7 months ago when Halo Reach launched?

Halo has ALWAYS had some of the best graphics ever at the time of release. When Halo 3 launched in 2007, there was nothing to compare it to. Co-op, multi-player, a hierarchy of enemies only matched by Gears. Fantastic weapons, level design as well a great vehicle combat. Great HDR lighting and water effects, what more do you want?

Halo 1-3

Halo Reach: Single player, 4 player story based co-op, Firefight, Forge and multi-player.

Luckily, fans vote with game purchases and Halo is one of the best selling franchises ever.

The whole COD Vs Bad Company is a debate pushed by certain console fanboy owners who have issues. MW2 blew everyone away at E3 2009 and is one of the highest selling games this gen. It had a lot to do with the fantastic visuals.

Black ops was no different and has become the highest selling game this gen.

Crysis 2 is selling very well and is considered a great game because it's got great graphics on ALL systems. Here's the 360 version in action.

So the answer is a simple one. Graphics are a critical part of the video game equation. If it wasn't, people would still be playing on the last gen systems.

Of course the whole Nintendo Wii graphics situation is a topic for another thread.

Hey InTheKnow

I wouldn't say personally that it is a fanboy article. And if you bother to read the article properly, i'm talking about the original Halo. From years a go.

Also, you can't talk about graphics without a comparison between games otherwise it can become completely biased. For example, if i had just decided to talk about Bad Company 2, it would all be about how the graphics and gameplay are great. But as, in my opinion, call of duty visuals aren't as good, but the game itself was better, it was worth comparing the two.

But i do agree with your comment about graphics becoming an integral part of games these days. But is it really necessary to advance the graphics over the gameplay? Where we are at with graphics is pretty awesome anyway, so surely developers should just push the gameplay aspect of their games?

But again, I'm just one person with an opinion. And if you look through all the comments, there are a variety of different views.

Thanks for reading though, really appreciate that and your comment does have me thinking a bit more about the subject.

lyvon5538d ago

No, but they make it better, that is an undeniable fact.

fluffydelusions5538d ago

No but they add to it. I've played lots of crap games that looked pretty.

Dan_Vivian5538d ago

Yeah, same here. I feel that some games have put more time and effort into developing the graphics than the actual feel of the game.

yen8885538d ago

They don't make the game better, developer's just make them better because that will bring in money.

How the DMCA Laws Put Indie Developers at Risk

Filing a false DMCA claim costs nothing, requires no proof, and can destroy an indie game's launch in minutes. Fighting back can cost tens of thousands of dollars and take weeks (if you can afford it at all).

Copyright is copyright. DMCA is a good thing that protects creators IP., revenue and usage. and you can absolutely appeal a wrongful DMCA takedown. It’s happened to me. Was easily resolved.

VGMM120d ago

....I don't feel like you read the article, at all.

Seraphim120d ago

it's a good thing, but it's also long been reported, across a variety of industries and websites, that currently the system is ripe for and full of abuses. From fair use strikes, to matters like the one reported in this article. It's clear the law needs some tooth to punish bad actors and that parameters need to be set in how reports are filed; ie human review of said content and not some AI bot false flagging stuff. As is the system is far to easily abused by those who have motive to suppress and flag content they have no business or right to.

Commentby120d ago

No system will ever be perfect, but there needs to be a review, unless it blatant.

Nevers0ft119d ago

Until there's genuine consequences for this type of abuse, it'll keep happening across all media. DMCA is in principle a good thing, but it needs an overhaul.
