they way i think...if current ps2 owners buy a ps3 then would they throw their ps2/memory cards away? I don't think so...I know I didn't just for the fact that I had tons of saved files...did I throw my NES when I bought my SNES, NO, did I did the same with the SNES and N64, or N64 and GameCube, hell no, I still have my PS1 (most of these are safely stored) so I think BC is not a big deal for current PS2 owners as I don't expect people to go to the park pile up their PS2 and burn them once they buy a PS3. Now people that never had a PS2, do they care? If they do, they should get the higher end the PS3 since the difference between both sku's is about the cost of a PS2 :)

As a final note, I know I didn't get a PS3, 360 and Wii to play PS2,XBOX and GameCube games....otherwise I'd saved myself some $$$$

The interesting thing with the EU sales is, however, that it seems the Eur.499 bundle got a boost. The E399 is nowhere to be seen. Looks like everybody is running into the shops to get a BC PS3 as long as they are available. Also, I tend to believe the E499 bundle is a way higher value then the E399 machine - and still a E100 price reduction - BTW a strong $100 reduction effect happened in the US as well in July when the "price cut" was introduced back then.

Looks like the price alone is not the deciding factor.

And, the US has yet to get its $399 machine. So, all the talk about a $399 PS3 is useless (BTW: E399 == $565, still far away from $399)

I called around some gamestops today and was asking them are they getting 40GB preorders and they said they were already sold out. Other placed around said they've been getting several calls about when the 40gb's are going on sale.

This thing is going to sell like crazy. Think back to 11/16/2006 and you'll see that revisited. People will be camping out for the economic PS3.

P L A Y B 3 Y O N D

One of PS2s big marketing points when it was released was that it could play your PS1 games. For the first time when a new console was released you had access to hundreds of games. For those who owned a PS1 it meant they could take some of their invesment with them into the transition to the PS2. This was indeed a very marketable aspect of why someone should upgrade to the PS2. However, we all know the big gains for the PS2 did not really happen until the Slimline model was released.

When a parent walks into their local gaming store to buy their kid a PS3 for Xmas and ask "will it play all my son's/daughters" PS2 games?", I think they will be quite surprised when they are told no. Furthermore, most PS2 owners have dozens of games in their collection and many stores offer trade in deals. That is, trade in your PS2 console plus 10 games and get a discount on the PS3...however, now that you can't play PS2 games you keep why would you get rid of your PS2?

I think it is a mistake to have dropped BC but not one that will spell doom and gllom for the PS3. I for one am very attracted to the new price point but there is still no way in hell I'd buy one of these things to replace the PS2s in my kids bedrooms.

PS2 games are SO important to the PS3 that it will fail without them, yet at the same time these very important PS2 games are NOT worth playing a few extra bucks for....

Think BC is a very important and must have feature? No problem, just pay a few more bucks and you can have it.

Besides, more than a few already have PS2, and if they're still running now you can expect several more years atleast. Some will prefer a PS2 for playing PS2 games, you can play full games off the hard drive WITHOUT any hardware mods/changes.

Its hard to explain it to some retards but there is nothing sony can do about more games in 2007. If you guys what more games in 2007 you would have o go back in time and beg developers to make more games for ps3 in 2007.

Developers aren't gonna want to continue making game if enough people aren't buy the ps3. When sony lowers the price their doing it because developers are asking them to get a bigger user base. Since the ps3 was not the first console on the market they have to get a large fanbase quickly and increase attach rates.

Thats why 40gigs dont play ps2 games. This why the 40 gig will help them.

I own a 360 and a Wii and the thing that stops me from buying the PS3 is that there just isn't a bunch of games that makes me have to have one. Maybe a year from now there will be, but not now. Also their online has to improve to give a quality service like Xbox Live which takes time to develop.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
