Is Anonymous Really Helping Anyone?

It's been a few days since the Attacks on Sony Started. Anonymous Declared their War and took action. Though really ... have they helped anyone?

They are helping themselves, if that counts.

They are trying to fight for Consumer Rights, which means they are trying to fight for us, though not all of us share the same opinion about the matter.

While I seem to agree with pursuing GeoHot, I do not know if going after any and all subsequent hackers is right. I notice a lot of analogies with this issue, so here's mine, tell me if it's flawed:

Sony has a secret ingredient for their soup. GeoHot steals it and announces it to the world. GeoHot is a thief. But I decide to use this secret ingredient upon hearing it from Geo. Am I a thief for using the code? And is this the same as stealing the code, like Geo did?

I am not sure if this is a perfect analogy, so help me understand if it's not.

I don't know if Sony plans to go after any and all hackers. I think that obtaining IP addresses and going after hackers for hacking when they may not have stolen the codes like Geo did is something highly debatable. The hack is out, and Sony can't censor it. What Sony needs to do is win against Geo, stop chasing hackers who have learned the hack, and secure/hackproof their future hardware.

Warprincess1165518d ago (Edited 5518d ago )

Ok first off, Sony obtained those IPS for research purposes. So i don't understand why people complain about this. Sony is not going to arrest people that visited geohot site. Second, Sony does not want anyone MODIFYING their Software IN ANYWAY. So i don't think Sony did any thing wrong. Im glad someone standing up to these hackers.

Senden5518d ago

In today's world of privacy obsession, going around obtaining people's IPs without any proof of them doing anything wrong for "research purposes" is something I personally consider wrong and i'm sure there are loads of others who agree with me.

GrieverSoul5518d ago (Edited 5518d ago )

@Alpha-Male22
Your analogy is flawed because its not an ingredient that is acessible to all. imagine that its money (it actually is) and you know the money came from dirty businesses and I wanna buy a car with that money and you happend to be a cars seller. If you know the money comes from a dubiuos source, will you accept it?! Maybe you will and thats called money laundry and you will be an acomplice of that shceme. The code stolen from geohot is the same. People are selling this code by ways of pens drives or in store custom firmware updates. The biggest problem here, and there is no analogy possible to do with the real world, is that this "software" allows for the machine to run games without the need to buy that game. The purpose of this Video Game Industry is to profit like everyone else. I have a job and do it to get paid. otherwise I would be at home relaxing but bills dont pay themselves unfortunaly.

Regarding the IP adresses, people are making a fuss out of nothing. I saw Geohot website and youtube videos by clicking lnks other people posted and by my own curiosity. Sony aint gonna do #%#$ to me. I dindt do nothing wrong and if they would come (0,000000001% likely) i have nothing to hide. They jsut want the IPs to cross reference some stuff they got from geohot computers in order to see who were his "hack buddies".

GrieverSoul5518d ago

On a stretch here but regarding this "story", Anon are just fanatics that dont like to obey rules. They think they can do anything they want. I can only compare these guys with somekind mafia or fanatics group. They are in it for themselves. They want to be feared and they want to instigat fear. They are bullies and cyber terrorists.

I dont want these guys saying they are doing this for me. It disgusts me.

NewMonday5518d ago

Let's not beat around the bush these guy are not "consumers", they get everything they could get from torrents, and from their list of "demands" its obvious they are angry about the PS3 beating locked.

And I don’t think this is the original Anonymous, just some pirates copying them.

AssassinHD5518d ago (Edited 5518d ago )

Why is asking for an IP list to establish jurisdiction wrong? Sony never asked for the ISP account information attached to the IP addresses. Without the account information an IP address is just a number, and in most cases a dynamic one at that.

Do you even realize that you give your IP address out to every website you visit? Do you really consider it an invasion of privacy for a company to have a number that is not even pointing to you?

***But I decide to use this secret ingredient upon hearing it from Geo. Am I a thief for using the code? And is this the same as stealing the code, like Geo did?***

Based on the law, yes. Same law applies to if you buy something from a pawn shop that was stolen. No matter what, it's still stolen property.

The difference here is that the people using the knowledge know it's stolen. It's Sony IP or information knowingly used to ensure the security of their business on the device in question.

Look at it this way, Alpha, since it's all copyright law when it comes to "theft", there used to be a ton of crime involved in the illegal copying and distribution of music on the streets (the Internet changed that). Now, the primary targets were always those who were creating and distributing the music illegally (GeoHot), but they also would set up strings to just arrest those who would buy them illegally (other users). It was most important to get the distributors out of the way, but also to take the law against those who continued to buy as a way of warning others against such actions.

I should say that the people they've gone after aren't everyone who has used the CFW, but those who have distributed it, typically with their own modifications made or creating new software to be run illegally on the CFW. Sony has chosen to block PSN access to the majority of people who use CFW instead of taking them to court.

***I don't know if Sony plans to go after any and all hackers.***

Not likely, nor really possible. Enforcement is typically the hardest thing to do. There are definitely hackers right now who have enabled piracy on their machines and Sony doesn't know about it. These users haven't openly shared it because they know that Sony would earmark them in their suit.

The people they're going after right now were notable and vocal on their actions in using CFW to their own needs. GeoHot being the biggest target because of his propagation of such activities.

Remember, they didn't go after GeoHot or anyone else for the hacking of Other OS or anything else done with the system until they A) distributed the metldr info (security data) and B) distributed code that included or was designed to modify Sony IP (aka Firmware).

***They are trying to fight for Consumer Rights, which means they are trying to fight for us, though not all of us share the same opinion about the matter. ***

Saving this for last since it's heavily based on my opinion, but Anon has not been known for really fighting for "rights" so much as fighting for what they want when they want. It's the 4chan of wannabe hackers (trust me, DDoS and social knowledge gathering isn't hacking).

I'm sure a few of them have good intentions, but like all things it's those that don't do it for the wrong reasons that end up going too far.

And, I do believe that by knowingly interrupting the ability for the people they're fighting for to play their games or use the services they've paid for is against the idea of fighting for consumer rights when they are themselves are inhibiting the same people for which they are fighting.

-Alpha5517d ago (Edited 5517d ago )

I was afraid that counter would come up. I was thinking of drug dealers and how buying drugs still makes you guilty of crime.

Thanks a lot for the heavy response

@ Alpha

"Sony has a secret ingredient for their soup. GeoHot steals it and announces it to the world. GeoHot is a thief. But I decide to use this secret ingredient upon hearing it from Geo. Am I a thief for using the code? And is this the same as stealing the code, like Geo did?"

This makes me think of when a person purchases a stolen item from another unknowingly or knowingly. I say both because in this case, people might not realise the codes are stolen in the first place. However, those who do buy stolen goods are suppose to prove their innocents by showing to a judge that they had no prior knowledge on the matter.

I believe that those who use the code for their own means, have not stolen anything. Yet if they do realise that the code is stolen then you ca not really blame them for the access to it since they did not personally take it from Sony. It was given to them, or they they were allowed access to it by the one who stole it.

In this case you would blame the person who stole it, since they are at the heart for the cause of this matter. If it were not for them none of this would of happened in the first place. The others who use it since they have access to it, well you can blame them too or not, but in this case they stand up for their "right" to use something that is stolen. It's like being found that you have unknowingly or knowingly taken stolen money from another and refuse to give it back to the owner...Who does that when caught? (I mean keep it to themselves of course)

Sony is likely going against all hackers to distill fear into them. That way they will think twice about using another code in the future or even avoid hacking Sony products entirely.

You see the main thing is change. People were use to being able to break into a product and use it to their own personal gain. The thing is Sony is denying them this gain and people naturally dislike change. So they retaliate, even if their retaliation is wrong. To them they want what is natural to them even if it hurts another, in this case Sony which in turn hurts us the consumer.

So are they fighting for what is right or what is wrong on a global picture? Should people be able steal in order to gain and be able to release what is stolen to others? If yes then you apply the same question to every single possibility in this case. Meaning if you steal from the bank it is okay to give the money to others, even if they know that it stolen or not.

Krimson-Rage5518d ago (Edited 5518d ago )

If you then give that secret ingrediant to other people knowing full well that they intend to make their own soup, thus costing the original soup makers a lot of money, then that IS wrong.

Can't really count that since they don't know what they want to do.

"Lets take down their sites"
-Fail-
"Hey lets attack PSN"
-Not a good Idea-
"Ok lets just keep attacking the sites and annoy the rest of the internet with news about us"
-Good Plan-

LOGICWINS5518d ago

Its weird cause they said today that there intention was NOT to hurt PS gamers. If thats the case, why the hell would you attack PSN in the first place? OBVIOUSLY, we are the ones who are getting screwed.

-Alpha5518d ago

They considered us collateral damage but have since reconsidered.

I think they'll just continue to annoy Sony employees.

AssassinHD5518d ago

By "continue to annoy Sony employees" do you mean "continue to harass their families and cost pizza restaurants money by placing fake orders"?

disturbing_flame5518d ago

By hitting the media, and hype market, Anonymous is getting popular and visible.

i don't know if it's a good thing for the organization to be in the spotlights, they do remarquable work in the shades.

Anyway as a consumer i appreciate the pression they can do or make, but i like also their philosophy of not interfering with the users of PS3 system.

skorp5518d ago

They're helping you get hits on your website...

iDotDotDot5518d ago

Thats always a good thing. :)

@disturbing_flame
Its not good media for them, like I'm sure you've seen most of the gamers are against it. Even if they aren't attacking PSN anymore they are still causing problems for consumers.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle18d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga26d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199225d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga25d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman25d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box26d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion25d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7226d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7526d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit26d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14926d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7726d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
