I don’t get it: Why I never connected with Duke Nukem and never will

The Border House: "When I was but the tender young age of 15, two highly innovative games came out in the same year. They would leave a lasting impression on me and arguably the gaming industry in general. One game was the first fully 3d game ever and the other was the first game (to my knowledge) that allowed the player to kill sex workers (without recourse, naturally). I am speaking of the year 1996, in which the game Duke Nukem 3d came out in January and Quake came out in June. One of those games would launch a successful franchise for a developer which still exists, the other turned out to be a hit which could not be replicated in a timely manner.

For what it’s worth, Half-Life has sold 16 million copies, Doom sold 8.5 million copies and Duke Nukem 3D sold 3.5 million copies. If “sex(ism) sells”, then who’s buyin’?"

This is why i don't like Duke Nukem. This guy summed it up perfectly

hay5540d ago

A little distance and an open mind is what you guys/gals need.
Duke was never serious, and never to be considered serious. You never enjoyed Jackass? Never watched dumb movies? Never laughed at Twilight? It's similar type of entertainment.
Toilet humour which is present pretty much everywhere(including so "well established" politicians as WikiLeaks have shown), exaggeration(which is integral part of gaming and movies) and lack of logic(the same).

People miss Duke 'cause it's fun. Pure fun without constraints, people with brooms up their asses, or morality.
Several hours with fart and fecal jokes, sexism and oldschool gameplay which doesn't try to be realistic, gray or brown.

Break out of your morality cage and broom-up-you-know-where and let your inner simpleton have some fun. Nobody's going to be hurt with you sitting on your couch and throwing virtual feces.

Army_of_Darkness5540d ago

What a mommas boy! Go watch twilight you little sissy! The duke is fun and entertaining;-)

Derekvinyard135540d ago

antz11045540d ago (Edited 5540d ago )

Lol, what a bunch of prudes raised in a nun factory.

This game will be awesome if you relax a little and let yourself have fun.

Solid_Snake-5540d ago

duke nukem is a game to let your brain go while stomping the enemies brain out.

relax play and have a laugh.

In the last DN article, I pointed to Penny Arcade's comic. Now I'll point to their text: http://www.penny-arcade.com...

"Jetpacks. Tricksy holograms. Shrink-rays. I mean, there are entire games based on individual Duke features. Timed detonators! It's like they had access to a different alphabet, and somewhere they are still hoarding those secret letters. Why are all of those ideas in the same game? It's from 1996, and it still comes up in conversation. The Subway. The Bank. Virtually unlimited levels to play on, 20k or less in most cases. I shot Gabriel once with a shrink ray, and he used his jetpack to fly out the window like an insect. Fifteen years ago. Still talking about it, about scenarios that to this day no game has managed to top."

Ignore this comment, it was meant to be a reply.

You dont play this game for its story or to get attached to the characters.

You play it to turn your brain off for a bit and have fun.

Pozzle5540d ago

This.

I never understood the whole "I can't enjoy a game if I can't connect to the characters" thing.

I don't need to 'connect' to a character (or relate to them) to like them, or to like the game they are in. Hell, I doubt fans of characters like Sephiroth or Kratos have much to connect with or relate to. But that doesn't stop them from being good or interesting characters.

Saryk5540d ago

The author is a complete moron and I usually don't slam writers.

Duke Nukem sold a lot of games for it's time because the gaming population was small. Back when this game was new, it had on of the best multiplayer matches around, and it was a blast. Writers like this is why no one can take a joke anymore.........

OhMyGandhi5540d ago (Edited 5540d ago )

@Saryk

I thought your avatar was a guy showing his ass to the viewer for some reason.

After reading the article, I simply don't understand what he REALLY is complaining about.

Games are about interactivity.
Who knew that opening cabinets, and flushing toilets could make a game fun, not to mention, add even more definition to a game's seemingly ridiculous universe.

Duke, although extremely "low brow" in nature, is a great example of a game that embraces the best B movies out there, and strutting its stuff with a self assured attitude of what it wants.

Although I never really cared for the other Duke's in the series, Duke Nukem 3D still remains a monumental step for the gaming industry, something that took simple object interaction forward and storytelling back ten years. But that's the point.

For me, personally, it's dumb fun. I watch "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus" or "Shark in Venice" to laugh my ass off and have a good time.

I find movies that take themselves seriously and ARE MEANT to be taken seriously rather offensive, a good example being "Transformers" and such.
Because the degree of the "emotion" is hard to transfer, and viewers are expected to understand the plight of the actors and Hasbro creations that meander around before them.

I can understand why people don't like Duke Nukem, but even early on in this article does he state the good it has done, innovations it has brought to an industry that seems to be lacking in inspiration lately, and right there he should of realized that there really is no good reason to dislike a game that brings about a good time like Duke Nukem.

So transformers and other movies that take themselves seriously are offensive to you, yet you find the super cheezy c grade sci fi channel rejects like sharktopus, megashark vs giant octopus ect, are good movies wow really. So much for personal taste. No thx.

Never really played duke nukem much, i'll check it out probably not going to buy it, not a real big fps gamer. But the people getting upset about this are probably the same crybabies that went on a crusade when postal was released.

tdrules5540d ago (Edited 5540d ago )

Usually when I don't like something I don't talk about it.
You make an article about it, stop trying to get hits it's pathetic.
Who asked you to be connected with Duke Nukem?
No one.

Feel free to drop me in the "Nukem fanboy who doesn't like when people talk shit about his favourite games", but that's not why I think your article is stupid by N4G standards

jim2wheels5540d ago

Getting hits is what internet journalism is about isn't it?

Just saying...

Snookies121355d ago

It is pretty amazing, I remember being so hyped that they covered the Duke theme back when it happened haha. I still quite enjoyed Forever though personally.

"so wrong yet so right"

Only a few will know what Im talking about lol :D

porkChop1397d ago

Wow, that advanced lighting makes a huge difference to the visuals. I get that Gearbox tried to slap everything together and release a finished product. But it seems like they cut out a lot of content that would have made the experience more enjoyable. That's a shame.

ZycoFox1397d ago

Nerfed due to consoles.. and not the first time it has happened.

-Foxtrot1397d ago

Kind of amazing the difference a lighting engine makes

ZycoFox1397d ago

Same, the AI could be pretty dumb but the bosses were fun. I thought the levels (mostly) got better later in the game too.

XiNatsuDragnel1397d ago

Devs nerf a game man best quote I've ever heard.
