GamePro: BioShock vs. Halo 3

It's not easy to choose between two obvious Game of the Year candidates, but in reality, not everyone can afford to buy every game out there. So GamePro poses the question: If you had to choose, would you buy BioShock or Halo 3? GamePro breaks each game down into eight categories to see who emerges victorious.

Both BioShock and Halo 3 are classic shooters and hold up as two of the best games of all time. If you look at the results by category, it's easy to understand. If you're not much of an online gamer, BioShock is your best bet. If you consistently play on Xbox Live, you need Halo 3. But really, the final choice is simple: find the money to buy both.

Here is the list of the categories and its winners. See the article for the detailed explanation:
Story - winner: BioShcok
Graphics - winner: BioShcok
Sound - winner: BioShcok
Arsenal - winner: Halo 3
Controls - winner: Halo 3
Single-Player - winner: BioShcok
Multiplayer - winner: Halo 3, obviously
Innovation - winner: Halo 3
Replayability - winner: Halo 3

Bioshock was going against anything except Halo 3 with it's amazing multiplayer it should win hands down. The truth is millions will be playing Halo 3 online for YEARS. I'm not sure about giving Halo 3 the win in the innovation category though. Combat Evolved was important because of it's polish as a FPS on a console and Halo 2 had it's incredible multiplayer. Halo 3 just built on that solid foundation. I think Bioshock almost re-defined the shooter. Just as every online console game is compared to Halo 2 (and now 3) every story driven shooter will now be compared to Bioshock and that's arguably a larger amount of games.

Good article though.

Excalibur6794d ago

The only thing innovated about Halo 3 is the new Camera feature. it's basically the same game as 1 and 2.

Though I did have fun with Halo 3 I think BioShock is a much better game.

Blackfrican6794d ago

Bioshock is a joke. FPS not compatible with Mutliplayer? haha

Lygre6794d ago (Edited 6794d ago )

I bought Bioshock and played through it and liked it. But when it's finished it's finished - I didn't see a reason to start the game over again.

But when I finished Halo 3, I've played several of the levels over and over with friends on Xbox Live. I've played with campaign scoring on, making the singleplayer a competetive game, and also the skulls makes things more interesting.

Now Halo 3 also has a brilliant multiplayer making it last years longer than Bioshock (which lasted like a week for me). And I do think that Halo 3 has more innovation cause of things like Forge, Saved Films, File Share and a Bungie.net that you can visit and look for stats, pictures, movies, gametypes etc.

Bioshock has better grapics and sound, but you get way more out of your money if you get Halo 3 cause it's going to be around for years.

I like both games, but I'm just a fan of games with MP.

Edit: And you can't say that "Bioshock or Halo 3 is game of the year", when COD4 and Mass Effect aren't out yet.

Captain Tuttle6794d ago

About the Forge and Theater...I hadn't considered those (even though the article did).

And you're absolutely correct about COD4 and Mass Effect.

Jack Bauer6794d ago

the story imo is more of a close call...then a "hands down"

sound i would give the edge to halo 3, the soundtrack is amazing

otherwise i agree though.

thats the first thing i noticed, kinda funny actually!

That's Microsoft's gaming division for you...kill off developers making new ip while trying to capitalize off some long lost glory that has no hope of ever being what it once was thanks to recent decision making favoring unrealistic profit goals and greed. What a joke.

Reaper22_198d ago

So much bitterness. Why be upset over something like this. Just don't buy it and stick with what you prefer.

Tacoboto198d ago

Complaining about Microsoft is the only thing people comment here for anymore.

This website is practically dead without it

Mmmkay198d ago

I remember when you guys constantly complained about Sony remaking and remastering games. Guess it is cool now. As usual.

thesoftware730198d ago

Give it rest medman..., take a deep breath and try to not sound so invested in something no one is forcing you to read, buy, or play.

"Console war"is over, Sony won, be happy.

medman193d ago (Edited 193d ago )

@thesoftware730
I'm invested in people losing their jobs and their livelihoods while Microsoft execs tout record profits for their gaming division. Not sure why you wouldn't be invested. Could be you one day. Good luck.

Travesty198d ago

So what’s their solution to having multiplayer? Wait until Halo 7?
That was one of the most memorable parts of Halo..

monkey602198d ago

I'm not sure spending the heavy investment in time to recreate the multiplayer here is the answer either though.
Remaking the campaigns is a great idea to bring the new players up to speed. But if the multiplayer is included in each it'll just fracture the player base of each release.
I think it might be better to turn these campaigns out quicker and have 1 multiplayer game to keep everyone in one place

Travesty198d ago

Maybe having an Halo Online and just release the Combat Evolve maps. And when Halo 2 releases have those maps release. I don’t know but I would like to play a newer version of Halo multiplayer. I know times have changed, and Fortnite is all younger kids really play. But back then it was Halo and you connecting 6 Xbox’s together lol.

jjb1981198d ago

I agree. I think that'll segment the playerbase and once 7 comes out, players might realize it sucks and go back to the older games. Especially if 7 is live-servixe, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot on the one good leg they have to stand on.

crazyCoconuts198d ago

Kinda surprised they didn't just port MCC.
Maybe more $ to by made with separate remasters

Inverno198d ago

Wouldn't have that problem if it were MCC being released. Gotta wait for 7 to be disappointed with MP all over again cause if they half baked Infinite what makes people think they won't half bake the next game? MP works in past HALO games not cause of nostalgia but because it's MP that isn't concerned with the endless service approach.

JEECE198d ago

There is so much cognitive dissonance over Infinite. People say they didn't like it because it was a live service. Yet if you look at what the criticisms of it were at the time it came out and when the playerbase started falling off, the primary issue people had was a lack of updates. In other words, it wasn't enough of a live service.

Which is really an encapsulation of the problem with multiplayer today. So many people think that they want to go back to the "good old days" of mid-2000s multiplayer (The first few Halos, Socom, the first few Battlefields, CS 1.6, etc), but in reality if a multiplayer game like that came out today, people would whine about the lack of content within a month of launch and go back to a live service with a grindy progression system.

isarai198d ago

Why not just port the MCC? 🤔 That was the easiest layup ever and you completely missed it

franwex198d ago

30% profit margins! People will pay $70+ for remakes!

Software_Lover198d ago

I thought the same thing, then I realized that they wouldn't include the remakes in that edition. We may get a different version of Halo MCC in the future with all of the remakes included. I just want them to include Halo 5 at some point for PC.

TheColbertinator198d ago

Can they remake Reach too with the multiplayer?

Knightofelemia198d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will port Reach over to Playstation I quite enjoyed that game. I played Halo 3 and it was not bad I have Halo 2 on the OG Xbox I just need some cables to hook up to my tv to play it.

Next ‘BioShock’ Game Changes Leaders After Development Turmoil

The fourth game in the ‘BioShock’ series has been in development for more than a decade

Bioshock is one of my favourites franchises. I love all 3 games and have played each several times. I even have a room in my house that is loosely decorated around the theme of Bioshock (with a Lighthouse, coral models and postcards styled as though they are from both Rapture and Columbus).

And yet I am going to find it extremely difficult to get even remotely excited about any future episode in the series after all the problems this has had in its development cycle.

Leave the franchise alone. Remaster them again if you have to. Then put whatever talent you have to use on something brand new.

Furesis289d ago

Since ken levine isn't involved i'm not surprised what's going on. i'm more excited for his next game which looks like bioshock. Yet he still works under take2 and they are making bioshock 4 without him, strange situation.

toxic-inferno289d ago

Yes. Judas. Looks brilliant, but it's one of those games that seems to never have had a release date. Instead it's had release windows that keep getting pushed back.

Once it's ready, I'll be there for it though. Ken Levine is an excellent developer.

I get the feeling he dissolved Irrational Games simply so that 2k couldn't tell him what to do. It seems it will pay off, but I feel sorry for those who worked as part of Irrational before it was dissolved, who hadn't independently made a name for themselves.

ActualWhiteMan289d ago

He didn’t even want to make 2, that’s why they did it without him.

Rebel_Scum289d ago

tbh it wouldnt be a Bioshock game without development hell. They all had it.

Michiel1989288d ago

bioshock 2 was 2.5 years after 1, so much of a development hell it was......

-Foxtrot289d ago

"Remaster them again if you have to"

Well apparently they were doing a remake but that got cancelled

Relientk77289d ago

It sucks this game is in development hell because I love BioShock and would love a 4th game. I hope it turns out great, but I guess we'll see.

P_Bomb289d ago

Love Bioshock. It’s too bad what’s going on. At least we have Judas.

Yui_Suzumiya288d ago (Edited 288d ago )

It's been in development hell since 2014. This is nothing new. It saddens me because it's one of my favorite series. At this point, Judas may end up releasing first.

BABI-PANGPANG288d ago

Bioshock 4 (if it ever comes out) will probably still look and play like a Bioshock game, but without Kevin, it might miss that spark that made the originals so special. Honestly, Judas might end up feeling more like the real spiritual successor.
