First of all lociefer, stop using text chat it's an extremely bad habit this is the interwebs not a text message.

And secondly a engine has very little to do with how the game looks. Of course there are some trade marks like the texture pop-ins on unreal 3.

But that's also the secret to it's success, there's a reason most of the talented game studio's in the world use Unreal 3.

Because it's extremely flexible, and great for developers. Also the Unreal 3 engine looks just fine unless your a muppet who has no PC gaming experience.

Not to add the fact that some of the best games this gen and some good looking ones use the engine.

Developers use Unreal Engine because it's a cheaper solution than creating a proprietary engine.

Unreal Engine is extremely versatile and supports all kinds of third party alternative software such as for lighting and physics.

Since games are expensive to make, it UE is a fantastic option for studios who are on a tight budget.

The various bugs associated with UE are not unique to UE.

Texture pop-in is something I have begun to notice in all kinds of games, including heavy-hitters like Uncharted and Killzone.

As far as visuals, Unreal Engine is extremely verstatile.

If I hadn't read about Mirror's Edge online, I would never have guess that it runs on Unreal Engine.

Same with Bioshock.

Unreal Engine sucks because...
1) Cliffy B is associated with it and "they" are still hurting over him.
2) It is used to make Gears 1/2/3 360 exclusives "they" don't get to play.
3) Because the Samaritan demo has "them" worried about next-gen.

CryEngine sucks because...
1) It has produced Crysis 2 which is constantly being compared to "their" best looking game in terms of graphics.
2) It will be used to develop Codename Kingdoms which "they" won't be able to play.

There hasnt been much yet on the cryengine game front , outside of outstanding mods .

Cryengine 1 resulted in not so well optimized Aion experience (everyone , even high end users had to drop the settings to the lewet details to properly play pvp) .

Cryengine 2 got well almost nothing ... in fact most cryengine 2 projects dropped it for the next version

And with CRy3 fairly new yet more optimized , it's promising , but still nothing major yet .

Of course aside from Crytek's own games , and again outstanding mods

but i'm thinking you mean commercialized engines.

i rather like the game engines that take advantage of the hardware like sony's in house developers.

the problem is when ONE company wants to make a buck and monopolize the industry.i remember when renderware was used heavily.then EA bought criterion and captured renderware.because of that,everyone ran to unreal as a solution.and dropped renderware.

specialized engines are the creative ones.

Just so they can use this one to death and take years and years to make a new one, no thanks. How long has it been since the last unreal engine and this one. Way to long, tech moves very fast and they cant just keep using old engines for so many years and take forever to make a new one.

Not a big fan of any external middleware shortcut for the 3d engine .

Sure they do wonders in the hand of talented team , but those would do even more if they took the ressource and time for their in house engines .
Some of rest hack it with lack of creativity along with the lack of skills .

I understand some can't for obvious reasons , but some big publishers are full of it .

Sure once upon a time , engines like Id tech could take any shape and form , even now with thelazy cod serie ... but epic unreal engine 3 ? It is pretty good , but you do recognize it too easily , even with its best games .

At least those engine do improve on a regular basis .

For buying Bulletstorm, I'm guessing? If so I kind of think you have a point. I do most of my multiplat gaming on PS3 and PC but was tempted by the Gears3 beta offer with Bulletstorm myself-but then thought it was a bit much to have to have a Gold sub just to , basically, help MS out by playtesting one of their biggest exclusives for them.

I think MS missed a trick because HAD they allowed Silver members to play the beta some would, surely, have felt Live was worth seeing more of and stuck their hand in their pockets for more-esp those who haven't ever subbed.

As I opted for the PS3 version of BS I didn't ever get to see if they kept, or were keeping the Gears3 Beta for Gold members only but I just assumed they would do and you seem to be confirming they have-it's a shame as some people won't even have thought about it when getting Epic's game with the Gears3 beta with it. Be good if they allowed a return to PC for a series(Gears)which they had on it for the first installment of what we always knew would be a trilogy-I know MS likes 360 to have the odd exclusive but not when it's been on their other platform already, please?

As for UE3-sure people moan but I think middleware being bought in is just financial sense for most multiplatform devs and the better ones have made some great, and great looking games, on all platforms using it. I think it gets the blame for a few lax porting efforts too-esp in PS3's early years- and we shouldn't blame engines for lazy development/ports. The engine's been part of some truly amazing games so cut it some slack people.

Oh well, as it is it looks like my next Live sub will be for when Gears3 actually arrives and I'm certain it's one Unreal Engine game that people will feel performs very well on it's platform too. Why would we be surprised that Epic want it everywhere anyway? Isn't that, like, the point of selling middleware?

I can see the attraction of devs being hyper self reliant and making their own, very creative or platform tailored engines to get the most from a game and a system but finance and multiplatform games make that a hard thing for many third party devs to even consider-I would imagine. UE3 isn't the cancer some make out.

I remember that in the past some 360 games came with 1 month of gold free. One of those games was GTA4 if i remember correctly. They should have done the same with bullet storm.

Apparently nobody remembers the absolute shitshow that happened when EA brought the Havok engine which was used as the default engine of the 6th generation like UE is used today.

You've got it wrong, EA bought Renderware not Havok. Havok was bought by Intel in 2007 and then Microsoft in 2015

Nor was it ever a widely used or considered, game engine, Renderware was. It was and still is a physics/material simulation plugin for the actual game engines.

Yeah you're right i was thinking of Renderware. But point still stands Renderware was used literally everywhere from games like GTA 3,VC,SA to Sonic games and Tony hawk it was really the default industry wide engine that UE is today.

If Disney takes over Epic and UE we could face a situation where they change the terms of use for other game devs big and small. They could remove the licensing agreements currently in place and impose a payment per download model like Unity did which could cripple the industry.

Disney doesn't exactly have the best rep when it comes to partaking in gaming. They've built studios just to shut em down, not to mention just how much of an over the shoulder nuisance they are. If Epic wants to see Unreal Engine be dismantled and lose its hold on the industry then by all means. Also say goodbye to Fortnite because they will definitely kill it off with all the horrible decisions they'll force onto Epic.

UE5 has replaced pretty much all engines at this point and even custom in house engines have largely disappeared in favour of UE5 imagine if Disney come in and pull a Unity move to change per download and that's just scratching the surface

I do not support this acquisition. Disney has already tried running a gaming division and they shut down Disney Interactive in 2016. Nothing good will come from them buying Epic games as much of the industry relies on Epic games as they are now.

Disney buys up Epic they will just shut them down after a while. Disney shut down LucasArts their motto is just license the character out and have someone like say EA make a game around lets say Mickey Mouse. Epic is better off on their own.
