Crysis 2 360 Version Missing Self-Shadows From Light Sources – Proof

Unlike the PC and PS3 versions, the Crysis 2 Xbox 360 version is missing self-shadows from light sources and here’s screenshots to prove it.

Valay5500d ago

Crytek is screwing every platform owner up.

plb5500d ago (Edited 5500d ago )

Yes but none more than PC gamers as it's just a console port. You want to see rage go to mycrysis forums and look at the PC section.

MaxXAttaxX5499d ago

I thought it was already clear that PC or PS3 versions were the way to go.

They should stop posting these type of articles. It's like beating a dead horse.

DaTruth5499d ago

I have the PS3 version and walked past that same spot and it has the exact same thing! No light sources other than the Sun have shadows!

That aspect of the game was extremely over blown! But the same thing happens in Killzone3; I was in a room with a big spotlight(before the broadcast room), no shadows!

The only game that does that is KZ2(maybe others but I don't know) and it was a huge downgrade in KZ3. Probably done to accommodate 3D!

AntiHeroComplex5499d ago

holy crap man you are right (plb). So many complaints! wow PC gamers are really pissed.

Biggest5499d ago

I wonder where those "EASILY the best lighting ever done in a console game! Screw Killzone!" people wandered off to? They were so very attentive to Crysis 2 earlier this week.

IcarusOne5499d ago

Weird. My 360 version has shadows everywhere. I'm constantly seeing my own shadow.

WetN00dle695499d ago

NathanExplosion

YEAH..........NO!
Ps3 version looks great no doubt BUT the 360 version looks better. I have both versions.

kikizoo5499d ago

"i have both version"

LOL.

"Crytek is screwing every platform owner up. "

not really the 360, since it's probably the best graphics seen on the ms console. 'not pc or ps3 obviously)

WetN00dle695499d ago (Edited 5499d ago )

@kikizoo

You think i dont have both versions? Ill post pic of both my PSN and Gtag cards.

kancerkid5499d ago

Wow, people are complaining that there is not shadow of the playable character?

How do you even notice that?

MaxXAttaxX5499d ago (Edited 5499d ago )

Comparing the PS3 version with the PC version you'll notice more similarities. 360 is the odd one out(plus screen tearing).

What you're seeing is a harsher contrast. 360 has a problem displaying gamma levels properly.
It may seem appealing to the untrained eye. But there's a lot of detail lost in the shadows due to the black crush displayed by the 360, like shown here
PS3: http://www.lensoftruth.com/...
360: http://www.lensoftruth.com/...
Not exactly a good attribute and isn't any better.
360 may perform better(frames wise) but overall visually, PS3 is more true to the source.

Although difference are practically unnoticeable when playing either version of the game back to back.
360: http://www.lensoftruth.com/...
PS3: http://www.lensoftruth.com/...
It's only on side by side screen comparisons that you'll notice any minor differences.

WAWI5499d ago

Yeah, still I prefer the Wii version. It plays the best!!

WetN00dle695499d ago (Edited 5499d ago )

NathanExplosion

Yeah but then again you chose LoTs to do the comparison. Their pics were all BS and Digital Foundrys comparisons are the way to go. Anyways i agree with WAWI, the wii version is amazing!

pixelsword5499d ago

Did anyone actually READ this article?

1. they only had one set of comparison pics, not hardly a reasonable comparison

2. they only had the PC/360 shots; they either didn't have or neglected to provide the PS3 shots to compare with.

3. although I really don't care, why is it that I'm reading below (not above) that graphics doesn't matter when before when LoT put out a comparison that showed really very little between the two (here where it gets dirty...) that 360 enthusiasts were all over that article? Either graphics matter or they don't matter; I don't care about any opinion, but be consistant.

Kleptic5499d ago

All this is so pointless its ridiculous...but...

the only thing to take from this is that the media totally fucked up...again...

2 weeks ago it was all 'the ps3 is doomed!!! Crysis 2 is broken on PS3!!!!'

then reality came when it released...and it was, in fact, JUST as good as the 360...with multiple nods now going to the PS3 as the stronger console version...more realistic color reproduction, NO screen tearing but averaging like 2 frames less than the 360...

my point is that neither console version is 'better' than the other enough to justify what you buy...buy the one your friends buy so you can play online with them...or whatever...but the fact that the PS3 had an attempted right off again is getting retarded this far into the generation...

you even have IGN going as far as saying 'the 360 version of Crysis 2 is the best looking console game ever made'...which has been proven to be false, as its not doing anything that makes it better than the PS3 version...just different...there is a difference between those two statements...

Wow.

BeaArthur5500d ago

Dumb fanboys who have nothing better to do than argue about trivial stuff.

jriquelme_paraguay5500d ago (Edited 5500d ago )

haha.. funny...
PS3 or PC fanboy: haha!!! 360 version is missing self-shadows from light sources!!!!
360 fanboys: who cares

Its not something about care or not.

Arksine5500d ago

Sev is hardly a 360 fanboy. He is right, why does this even matter? The two console versions look virtually the same, and run virtually the same.

I can understand why PC gamers are pissed though. Crysis 2 on the PC should be pushing DX11 features.

ZeroX98765500d ago

@ Arksine
Yeah Pc fans are pissed off, mainly because crysis 1 was a benchmark game and was way too advanced for most common PC tech at the time. Even If you had the best Graphic card when crysis 1 got released, you couldn't run it to the max. Even now, Crysis 1 is still impressive and it came out in 2007!!!

But still, the game looks fantastic on the three platform with some pros and cons here and there.

NiKK_4195499d ago (Edited 5499d ago )

God, I really couldn't play this game, the campaign felt like playing a ps2 game, not because of the graphics, but because the draw distance is terrible, like I would aim at people down the street, but when I ADS I find out that actually there is something in front of them, and then when I put the gun down the thing in front if them disappears again. Also, the bullet holes in the wall lol, they only last for like 20 seconds and only like 10 bullet holes at a time, its so shitty how they made this game, the graphics of this game are not worth all the hits it takes EVERYWHERE else in the game, I hated it and had to return it, and don't even get me started on the MP lol and its supposed to be better than kz3, please, just please, kz3 has none of these problems and does each one of these problems crysis has so well, the bullet holes actually make holes, and it seems like they never disappear, and there aren't any problems with draw distance of texture pop in like crysis, but no fanboys have to have something don't they? I really wanted to like this game though, but I just couldn't, and it was boring, I just had to send it back to gamefly. I'm sorry but that is my opinion

news4geeks5500d ago

hardly screwing us over because of a missing shadow. Ridiculous the way some of you complain about a missing pixel on one version and then accuse the developers of being lazy.

BlackKnight5500d ago

Troll article. Crysis 2 CONSOLE version missing shadows on some light sources. And this isn't selfshadowing. Self shadowing is casting a shadow of yourself on yourself. IE, guy wearing a hat, hat cast on his face or guys arm casts shadow on his hip and leg.

Lame.

Kleptic5499d ago

uh...Crysis 2 does do that on the PS3...but I thought it did on the 360 also...at least it does from 'sunlight'...not sure about light sources inside buildings...which is what this article is talking about...

but even in the broken PS3 multiplayer demo...you could stand outside and spin your back to the sun and watch the shadow cast over your gun...and could see your shadow on the ground...PS3 owners are used to that...killzone 2 did exactly that 2 years ago, from ANY light source in the game...but weirdly, its still very uncommon in console first person shooters...

MitchGE5500d ago

Honestly, who cares at this point? The game is out, and the verdict regarding the visuals is out. In terms of the three platform comparisons, it goes PC > PS3 = 360. In terms of console FPS's, it doesn't look as good as Killzone 3. In terms of the gameplay itself, it's actually pretty good, so let's all stop making articles about the console versions' technical compromises and actually play it.

NewZealander5499d ago

actually the verdict on visuals from most sites is that 360 is still better then ps3, higher res slightly better frame rate, and installed the frame rate hasn't dipped for me yet, also there is self shadow in the 360 version, ive seen it several times and my friend had a laugh seeing his shadow in the game last night.

starchild5499d ago

Delusion at its finest. Only PS3 devotees are trying to convince themselves the PS3 version is better. IGN and Digital Foundry both said the 360 version had the edge over the PS3 version. However, both versions are pretty close to each other and quite a step below the PC version. Nevertheless the truth is something more like PC >>> 360 > PS3

As far as this missing shadow thing is concerned, both consoles have missing shadows in certain places. When I played the 360 version there were definitely shadows being cast from many light sources. Some light sources simply don't cast a shadow on the 360 and PS3 versions whereas in the PC version they do.

This is pretty normal for many console games. For example, I saw light sources in Killzone 3 that did not cast a shadow, while other light sources did.

Mmmkay5499d ago

and Only 360 devotees are trying to convince themselves the 360 version is better. stupid troll not even thinking about that eh?

it may be the best looking game on your xbox, but quite far behind when it comes to ps3 and pc.

zero_cool5499d ago

That's why i didn't buy the game or rented the game or even played the demo because there are so many other shooters coming out that will over shadow this game down the road that i wouldn't even care if i ever play the game at all!

Mindsucker5499d ago

Correction Valay The media is screwing up every platform.

Fishy Fingers5500d ago

When you need articles to point this sort of stuff out it shows its not really a big deal.

guigsy5500d ago

Seriously, I would never have realized if I hadn't seen this article.

Close_Second5499d ago

I agree that its not a big deal however, it does stand out like a sore thumb when you have a great lighting system. Its strange as all the other characters cast shadows except you!

Not many console games actually have a character shadow. I don't recall seeing one in the Resistance 3 footage.

clank5435500d ago

Lord help us all. Its obviously impossible to play this game without self shadows from light sources. It totally ruins the game.

macky3015500d ago (Edited 5500d ago )

ahahaha!
thank you bro for making my shitty day better,..
I kinda dislike 360,.. but this shit is ridiculous ,.. and I think even 360 has better games,..

AngryHippo5500d ago

People still comparing?! Maybe it's time to move on.

AngryHippo5500d ago

lol bubbles for you for making me chuckle.

tsunami9015500d ago

Yeah, like your own shadow's gonna make a difference gameplay-wise.

theonlylolking5500d ago

It makes the game more immersive thus enhancing gameplay.

Fishy Fingers5500d ago

^LOL that is stretching it.

DaTruth5499d ago

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about, this was one of the best features of Killzone 2(yes 2) and was a loss in Killzone 3!

For the record, this is also not in the PS3 version. That is the first light in the game and I was under the impression that all light sources cast shadows; I was disappointed when I noticed!

How could you pretend that shadow casts from all light sources wouldn't improve the overall graphics? It is actually a sign of a strong graphics engine and was a huge deal in Killzone 2!

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada072496d ago (Edited 2496d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X142496d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase2495d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

DigitallyAfflicted2495d ago

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

traumadisaster2495d ago

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

RaidenBlack2495d ago

EA should have released the Crysis Trilogy Remaster for this gen.

FGHFGHFGH2490d ago

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
