Sony NGP Dead on Arrival?

Despite the all the advertisements and anticipation, it has been a fairly quiet month for the Sony NGP. The majority of press buzz has been focused on the release of the iPad 2 and 3DS, so another PSP-styled device has been met with dividing opinions. Ngmoco and other social game centric groups have dismissed the NGP in light of the competing iOS mobile gaming devices.

Neil Young, CEO for Ngmoco said the NGP was “dead on arrival” and the PSP was already finished. According to Neil, it is incredibly difficult to compete with an application store (iOS) that holds numerous options where the average price is only $1.20. In addition, there a tens of thousands of free editions and trials that are very high quality. Neil Young thinks that Sony will not be able to compete with that type of availability.

I don't care. I'm buying it.

zootang5523d ago (Edited 5523d ago )

Call of Duty MW3 will drive sales. If you can continue your multiplayer from the PS3 over to the NGP, people will go mad for it.

Active Reload5523d ago

"I don't care. I'm buying it."

Ditto, and if they can get me a Fallout 3 experience on it or Borderlands, I'll be first in line.

Jio5523d ago

Call of Duty? That game makes me feel ill

afterMoth5523d ago

I never buy portables.. Well then I saw Uncharted on the this beast! I am sold :D

afterMoth5523d ago

LOL, I should have figured I'd get a disagree. The uncleanly insecure MS fans are in threads that don't even relate to them as MS has no portable gaming device worth a rats dropping.

NewMonday5523d ago

It’s the same line from the same guy repeated over and over for last 2 months now.

TheLastGuardian5523d ago (Edited 5523d ago )

"NGP will be dead on arrival"

lol that's the same thing Patcher said so it must be false.

Uncharted, Resistance, LBP2, Killzone, Call of Duty and GTA: San Andreas Stories will make sure the NGP doesn't fail. I know I have to buy one.

BattleAxe5523d ago

This "Neil Young" seems to forget that Sony is bringing out Playstation Suite for Android OS to cover that market, while NGP will be the system that covers the hardcore market.

hay5523d ago

Dooooom! Aren't those kids tired of this nonsense?

Rage_S905523d ago

lol more sony is doomed articles -_____-

firefoxprime5523d ago (Edited 5523d ago )

@AfterMoth

Or mabye there are some PS3 users who may not find Unchartered that appealing. I know!!! Crazy right??? Clearly there's something wrong with them. For having a seperate opinion from yours./s

Hey. You know the PS2 right? Okay. There "are" gamers who weren't interested in GTA or GOW.

N64? OoT bored me. I was much more into Mario64, SuperSmashBros, and StarFox64.

Bottomline: Not everyone who doesn't completely adore Unchartered is clinically insane or for the latter, an (insecure...?) 360 user.

yep.. me too...

it might have a hell of a time before it can really penetrate the market, but it will!

piroh5523d ago

same here

Uncharted
Resistance
Killzone
Wipeout
LittleBigPlanet launch titles? try not to buy it

hell even Hot Shot Golf or that Little deviant is worth the buy

JohnnyMann4205523d ago

DOA my ASS

See what I did there?...lol

1st day purchase here.

damnyouretall5523d ago

preordered day 1 for me. itll be successful no doubt. why would anyone want it to fail or even predict it to fail. some peoples opinions are shit

DigitalHorror815523d ago

I think the NGP stands A GREAT chance against the competition. The only thing it hinges on in my opinion is the price point. It needs to succeed and it needs to be realistic.

$250 for the Wi-Fi model
and $300-$320 for the 3G model

branchedout5523d ago

That's the thing. $250 is an awful low amount for the technology in it. The 3DS is $250, and everyone knows the NGP will be leaps and bounds better technically.

And if Sony follows Nintendo, we might see the NGP cost more than the PS3, as the 3DS costs more than the wii as it stands.

I'd say a $350 price tag would be expected (if not more).

RememberThe3575523d ago

I don't know why your getting disagrees that seems pretty logical. I would expect a 299 price point because it looks good to consumers, but 349 wouldn't surprise me at all.

DigitalHorror815523d ago (Edited 5523d ago )

Sure the NGP is better than the 3DS. I'll agree to that any day of the week. But here's the kicker. Sony should take a small loss on the handheld so that they can stop people from buying the 3DS. With Kaz, they're going in a different direction and they want this device to succeed, knowing how horribly the PSP Go failed to please the general consumer base.

The NGP HAS TO Work. And Sony should be committed to seeing it flourish.

Edit: Don't even worry about "Ngmoco" because all they are about are making free Iphone games that will get boring just hours in. The story is without merit and completely baseless. Don't buy an NGP, guys. We get paid by Apple to say that. Screw NGMOCO and the horse they rode in on.

saladthieves5523d ago

This notion of saying that a device is dead before it even arrives on the market (the NGP) is just stupid.

People said this when the PSP got on the market and so forth. I am buying one as well. I would love to have a portable console experience (or as close to it as I can) and to me the NGP seems to be set to do just that. That's why I'm buying it too.

Infernostew5523d ago

Same thing with me afterMoth. I haven't owned a handheld since GBA SP and I was sold the moment I heard of the uncharted game.

saladthieves5523d ago

GBA SP...my best friend. The feeling I got knowing that now I could now play games in the dark (thanks to its backlight) and never have to replace the batteries again was...just awesome.

xAlmostPro5523d ago

Wait what?..

Im pretty sure it wont be dead on arrival..

For a start it will only be released in 1 maybe 2 regions this year(one of course will be japan, which will go nuts)..

so im pretty sure there wont be "ipad 2" or "3ds" buzz by the time it gets a worldwide release lol..

not only that, yes apple have a very successful app store, but at the end of the day the ngp/psp2 is a portable gaming device that offers full aaa harcore titles..

and there hasn't really been advertisments for it, only announcements and details..

the quietness is probably good, lets the 3ds and ipad2 have the spotlight then this will pop back into everyones radar with real advertisements and it's own spotlight

NoOoB1015523d ago

I agree with active reload
Any good rpg experience..oblivion..fallout3 ..or even borderlands. I would get one just to have those games on the go anywhere.

BubbleSniper5523d ago

lol more fail from iOS devs

young an cocky becuz they simply aim for the wallet

stead of quality

BigMassacre5523d ago

I don't understand how it could be "dead on arrival" if it hasn't even arrived. I mean, NGP is still the codename for the thing.

There's not even an announced price or date of launch. Some people/haters are idiots.

BubbleSniper5523d ago

agreed

Jaces5523d ago

This will be the first PSP I buy on it's release date. That's saying a lot, and I believe it'll be the same for thousands of other people out there.

damnyouretall5523d ago

2-3 years after launch there will be some damn good games and killer apps. cell phones and ipads are getting more powerful but they just dont feel right for games imo. im a hardcore gamer and this handheld was made for people like me.

Jaces5523d ago

I have an iPod touch and most of the games I have are pretty fun but only for a short time, after awhile they become a bit boring.

The only one that has me coming back to it is Infinity Sword, really awesome game and the graphics are pretty intense for a touch. Dead Space is pretty badass too. :D

I think Sony finally got it right with NGP, here's hoping for the best!

5522d ago
syanara5522d ago

not only is it extraordinarily early to say DOA for NGP or really to say anything about NGP's success at this point what I feel will happen is that the NGP is taking a conventional approach to the market with dual analog sticks, 3g, touchscreen, and making all the moves for accurate control. the 3DS and nintendo may have over estimated their hardcore fanbase with the 3ds and needs to start putting out more causal system seller titles before NGP comes out or we are looking at a chance for sony to really hit nintendo hard as the 3D on the 3DS is not exactly a show stopper.

Trroy5523d ago (Edited 5523d ago )

So... Ngmoco. They make games for touchscreen mobile devices, not gaming handhelds.

I wonder if Neil knows that the best selling games on the PSP (GTA: LCS, etc.) outgrossed the best selling games on the App store by about a 20-to-1 margin, and that the average gross income of a PSP game is like 30x as much as the average iOS game, yet only costs about 10x as much to develop? Or that there are nearly as many PSPs in the world as there are iPod touch? That there are more DSes in the world than iPod touch and iPhones combined?

This guy's statement has "personal agenda" written all over it. He wants gaming handhelds to go away, because he thinks it'll help his business.

piroh5523d ago

he's just a troll. gladly it wont stop sony

JohnnyMann4205523d ago

Ahh yes Ngmoco

Makers of great games such as these:

http://www.ngmoco.com/games...

Psst: I have an iPad. I have played their games. they are shit.

Godmars2905523d ago

I'm just hoping that the doesn't abandon older style gaming like the PS3 and 360 seem to of have.

remanutd555523d ago

older style gaming ? care to elaborate a little more on that comment ?

Godmars2905523d ago

Turn based gaming. Sprites. Isometric views. Surrealism. The 360 and PS3 are all about real time and first person. JRPGs, strategy games and simple shooters and platformers have all suffered this gen because of a demand for realism - as terrorists mutants and marines soak up bullets.

Nicaragua5523d ago

PS3 has had Disgaea with a new one on the way, also Valkyria Chronicles - I'd say those fit the bill.

And if you want surreal then check out Noby Noby Boy.

FrigidDARKNESS5523d ago

this is an old article that's being rehash.
already discuss weeks ago.

Jio5523d ago

The NGP will not be dead on arrival, everybody that's seen it has fallen in love with it. Right now, Im playing my 3DS as I eagerly await my new handheld to accompany it :)

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle16d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay16d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn217d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn216d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown17d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay16d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay16d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac16d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger17d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300017d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde17d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde16d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
