Xbox 720: Is It Coming Soon?

flippies.com: Speculation as to when the successor of the Xbox 360 will be released began way back since 2007. News about the Xbox 720 (it would make sense to some people just to multiply the 360 by 2 to arrive at the new name, but we never know, Microsoft could really use it) is making rounds once again, but it isn’t just plain rumors that’s stirring the coup this time around.

So what’s causing renewed interest in a video game console that hasn’t even been officially announced yet?

Sure it is.... MS wants to upstage Sony again. And I don't blame them, it worked out pretty fine for the Xbox 360 bar RROD.

The Meerkat5526d ago

Agreed.

Sony should thank MS for the RROD.
Without that they could be 20 million behind now.

Chug5526d ago (Edited 5526d ago )

If anything, RROD contributed to MORE xbox 360 consoles sold.

On topic: I think 2013/2014 is a likely release date window for the next MS console. I myself am in no big hurry for the next gen systems to arrive.

LOGICWINS5526d ago

@Chug- Correct. 90% of the people I know whove owned a 360 have gotten RROD. From that 90%, ALL of them simply just bought a new one.

Wikkid6665526d ago

@Chug and Logic

Yes... you can say that people bought a new 360. That's short term sales. But something like the RROD is really not GOOD NEWS and many people said no way am I going to buy something that is going to die. Not only that MS spent crazy money fixing the issue. Money that could have been used for game development, etc.

I_find_it_funny5526d ago

MS still considers rroded consoles as sold in their announcements

RedDead5526d ago (Edited 5526d ago )

Well...i've had 3 360's. The other two were replaced by gamestop for free. But they would count as a sale wouldn't they? Gamestop lose one of their 'new' stock. MS would count that right?

Also, Sony outselling the 360 isn't so bad now. In the End more Ps3's will have been sold. But it's late in the generation. MS have left their mark in the industry. To keep up with Sony who had a generation(ps1) of loyalty more than them is quite impressive. It was inevitable that the Ps3 is outselling the 360. I guarantee a new Xbox will be out within 2 years. With kinect compatibility of course. MS wouldnt want their new gimmick to get left in the dust.

B1663r5526d ago (Edited 5526d ago )

I am on my fourth.

First one RROD'd first day. Took it back to BB next day, replaced no question asked.

That one lasted a little over a year before the DVD died, Called Microsoft, and they replaced it no questions asked.

I still have that one.

Got a new Slim with Kinect and 250gig hd this last xmas. Boy it certainly seems that this console works better than the old consoles...

@Below,

When your entire argument is based on tearing down straw men, it becomes an easy accusation to make.

The Meerkat5526d ago

Why, Why, Why would ANYONE buy a new 360 to replace a RROD model?

I should know, I'm on my 7th or maybe even 8th (I lose count).

Every one was under warranty.

If your new car broke would you get it fixed under warranty or just buy a new car?

Active Reload5526d ago

@chug, if we're going to play it like that, then the PS3 should be in first place off brand alone. I'm just playing devil's advocate though, lol.

Chug5526d ago

How does that analogy even work? You at least should have used items in a similar price range.

Of course it would take an idiot to blow $10000 to $30000 on a new car rather than fixing his old one. However, replacing a dead 360 isn't that big of a deal price wise. And I'm pretty sure there are plenty of people (out of warranty or for whatever reason) that have done so.

I myself bought a second 360 because my old refurbished model is literally a POS and doesn't have an HDMI port.

Istanbull5526d ago

LOL are you stupid? RROD contributed to more 360's sold. Millions of people just bought an Xbox again because their 360 got RROD or banned from Live.

Without RROD and permabans from MS, 360 wouldve been behind 10 million units.

SixShotCop5526d ago (Edited 5526d ago )

"Sony should thank MS for the RROD. Without that they could be 20 million behind now"

Nobody can argue with this.

@Istanbull.

I wouldn't call other people stupid with a comment like yours. Please tell me you're joking? You must be one of the hardcore PS fanboys on this site. Thanks for the laugh.

Theonetheonly5526d ago

does anyone think there will be backwards compatibility next console generation?

malamdra5526d ago

the next xbox is already here, it's called Kinect

casuals don't need newer tech

kreate5526d ago (Edited 5526d ago )

@the meerkat

"Why would ANYONE buy a new 360 to replace a RROD model?

Every one was under warranty"

what the hell are u talking about?
Xbox360 launched with a 90 day warranty.
later, hordes of Xbox360s just broke down.
so Microsoft extended the warranty to 1 year.

after the extension, another hordes of Xbox360s broke down and died a horrible death especially during the summer months.

it wasnt until some years after the Xbox360 was released and the media was talking shit about how Xbox360 sucks balls did Microsoft exteneded the warranty to 3 years.

if u go buy a Xbox360 today, it comes with 1 year warranty.

and another 2 years that only covers RROD related console death.

the 3 years is not really 3 years. its kind of a 3 years but not really. its just how Microsoft roll.

Mottsy5526d ago

^^ not a hard concept to grasp..cmon on sony fanboys

SixZeroFour5525d ago

the whole RRoD situation made it hard to tell how many xboxes would have sold...heres why

RRoD made sales go up because some ppl wanted to replace their system when out of warranty...this happened for ppl that ALREADY HAD an xbox

BUT ALSO

RRoD made sales suffer because some ppl didnt want to buy an unreliable console...this happened for ppl that DIDNT HAVE an xbox

so if the RRoD fiasco never happened, what would the sales be like? would it have gone down because ppl wouldnt have had to buy another back up console or would it have gone up because ppl wouldnt be worried about purchasing it and then have it break down on them? no one really knows because "what if" situations are always unpredictable

in fact, i would assume that the sales would have gone up, because many ppl buy multiple back up consoles anyways (i know a couple ppl that have multiple ps3's in one household) so if ppl werent scared of the xboxes breaking down, and at the same time buying multiple backups, i personally think that the sales would have gone up

the 360 is in huge trouble worldwide.

The 360 cant outsell the ps3 anymore worldwide

NoobJobz5526d ago

I think everybody realizes that. MS is nonexistant in other countries, which is why I think they focus on US. They can outsell Sony in US. They know they can't compete outside, especially in Asia. I don't even know if they're trying anymore. And why would they? They are going to cater to US. US has been treating them nicely.

undercovrr5526d ago

How is 360 in huge trouble? it managed to stay ahead for 3 years in almost every region. Also, you have to remember that the old 360's cheap plastic design made it much easier for MS to have a profit margin on every console sold, while Sony was still struggling to break even. Yes, Ps3 has caught up quickly, and is looking to get ahead by the end of this year, but you can't ignore the fact that a lot of people still have and still will buy 360's.

NiKK_4195526d ago

i dont think it ever has outsold the ps3 worldwide, the only reason it is still ahead is because it came out first, and of course, RROD, and i will admit it, i bought slim ps3 instead of waiting for my fat to be fixed and returned, but it did last for over 2 years, but i am glad i did, because it doesn't work at all anymore, gonna see if i can get them to replace my fat with a slim (and hopefully try and get them to throw in a slim ps2, because...well, you know, plus i bought the ps3 when it was $600 with mgs4, but it's through walmart, so maybe that will work)

Joni-Ice5526d ago

Yeah Im pretty sure MS is working on a new console, but make no mistake, Sony is working on one too. There is a lot both companies can learn from this generation. MS for one may not rush the console to the public to avoid another RROD outbreak. My 360 RROD 5 times. Sony can learn by making the console a little more affordable at launch. I got my PS3 day one and truth be told, I could have waited a little longer before buying. At the time $600 was not totally worth it.

RevXM5526d ago

Full price ps3 at launch was worth it.
IT was half the price of regular stand alone Blu-rays.

That is a STEAL.

IF Sony could have done anything to make ps3 better it would be to have clocked back up the GPU and uppgraded the ram to 768 Mb and just added more effecient cooling.

Also they should have gotten down the ingame features and menu and likeable social and network features such as Trophies, invites and X game chat from the start.
Pretty much it IMO.

Looking forward to next gen, hoppefully its here soon 2012/13.

Joni-Ice5526d ago

@ RwvXM.....Comparing it to Blu-rays....yes it was a steal, however looking at it from a gaming stand point not a steal. Beside, even at the launch of the PS3, the amount of Blu-Ray titles on the market was low. So $600 just for a blu-ray considering hardly any titles was still too high in my opinion.

arjman5526d ago

Doesn't matter for me, I'm about to become a PC...hey that rhymed! :)

Paladz5526d ago

They just announced a new update to the Xbox360 disc, why would they do such a massive update if they had Xbox720 "coming soon". ?

theonlylolking5526d ago (Edited 5526d ago )

They are probably not abandoning the xbox 360 like they did the xbox.

@ManiacMansion

How about you put this into perspective. Nearly all PS3 exclusives sell over a million. On the xbox only a few sell over a million but the few that do sell over a million sell way over a million.

PS3 gamers have more to choose from unlike 360 only gamers. Which is why when gears, halo, or forza comes out they sell way over a million.

B1663r5526d ago (Edited 5526d ago )

Because even if there is a new xbox, the 360 will likely be around for another 5-6 years...

See PS2

Joni-Ice5526d ago (Edited 5526d ago )

Just because they announced a new update doesnt mean they are not working on a Xbox 720. You do realize it takes years to build a new console. They can be starting now but wont release it until 2015 or when ever they desire.

Paladz5526d ago

Yes Joni - ofcourse they are working on it. They just have no reason to release it if they have updates available for the Xbox360. You will most likely see an announcement of the Xbox720(or wutever its called) close to PS4 announcement or visa versa.

wsoutlaw875526d ago

i dont really think its a "massive" update. they're just changing how they use the space on the dvds

If ms is marked for RROD then sony sure the hell better get marked for the YLOD i got the thing 2twice. I also experience the RROD too

How is this still an issue for debate? Of course they are working on a new system. Doesn't mean it's going to be released anytime in the near future.

theonlylolking5526d ago

It is happening quickly. I could see a 2013 release with a announcement @ 2011 E3 or 2012 E3.

For those that say they do not want them because of money. Well just do not buy it. Games are not cheap so save money.

plb5526d ago

Announce a new Xbox before geow 3? Wont happen. Next year likely 2013 release.

caperjim5526d ago

We are past due for a new console. Microsoft is crazy if they wait till 2013-2014. Consoles today are barely HD with all the jagged edges. Low settings on PC with the same game provide better visuals. Launch a new console now please.

tdogchristy905526d ago (Edited 5526d ago )

2013 please....2014 for sony maybe?

I'm really enjoying this generation and besides after how costly this generation has been ($1000+ for both consoles not including game prices) I'm in no hurry to shell out even more for next gen systems and have to start over.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio17d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing17d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit17d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing17d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay19d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn219d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn219d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown19d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay19d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay19d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac18d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger19d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300019d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde19d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde19d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_18d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
