Is your pre order really worth £40?

Is it really worth it to pre order every game coming out? or is it better to just wait for the price to drop?

It's all down to preferences really and how much you want a game. I'm looking forward to Mortal Kombat 9 myself after playing the demo and finding out a few friends are getting it too, but I'm by no means the series's biggest fan. I have some vouchers that only kick-in in May (with the game releasing April 21 here) so I'm going to have to wait a little while because I can't really afford to pay full price for many games right now and since just waiting that extra week and a half will save me a good bit of money.

But with something such as Mass Effect 3 for example, well I'll just have to bite the bullet because in my mind I have to play that game the first chance possible, even if I don't have incredibly high hopes for it.

Raendom5525d ago

I have began to wait. As soon as fully finish one game, which can take me weeks or even a whole month, THEN I'll get a new one and by that time it'll probably be really cheap.

I was planning to get Dead Space 2 on day 1, and still haven't got it yet, but look at the price it's gone down in the space of a few months.

As long as I buy brand-new from an online retailer and not pre-owned I think doing it this way means more developers get mroe money to make more awesome games. :D

I have begun to wait too, specially for games that cost 60usd now. I mostly game on PC so am used to the 50usd price mark.

i bought games like:

Dead space 10usd
bioshock 2 14usd
metro 2033 14usd
mafia 2 14usd

on steam discounts few months after release. hence unless a game is a must have like Portal 2 or Witcher 2 currently for me i will not be buying on day one.

I havent bought:

Fallout vegas, crysis 2, dragon age 2, dead space 2 so far will be picking them up when they are around 10-20usd in few months on steam. No poing shelling out 50-60usd on games.

claterz5524d ago

Waiting is definitely the best option, I usually wait until the price drops to below £20. Went into game last week and picked up FF13, Batman AA and inFamous all for £15 each.

I think the only games I'll be buying new this year are Uncharted 3, Batman AC and maybe Battlefield, other than those I'll wait for the prices to drop for other games.

Vherostar5524d ago

I been starting to wonder this myself I mean is a game REALLY worth £40 these days?? People in the US pay £32 and that's still a little too much for my liking. I get devs claim high costs etc yet they still sell under a million copies and call it a success so why not sell cheaper and sell over 1 million? they would still make the same amount of cash but more people could enjoy there game.

Jdoki5524d ago

I agree with you, but there's loads of problems and factors with video game pricing...

1. When CoD identified itself as the worlds best selling game, we saw a price rise. Idiots still pay over the odds for that series (including me). So why would devs drop their prices when CoD has set a new, higher, RRP. Every dev wants CoD sales figures.

2. Since back when I was a kid saving up pocket money there were tiers of games. There was the Mastertronic 1.99 series, the 2.99 series, and for really fancy games, sometimes 4.99!!! I think this perception of 'budget' vs 'full game' vs 'AAA' still permeates the market. Launching a console game at a budget price could be seen as negative.

3. As we move to a more digital distribution model I think we will get much more variety in pricing. Look at eBooks on the Kindle for example. Many authors have seen sales rocket after dropping the price to 99p a book, and the knock on effect is that this drives sales of other titles. the pricing model for digital books is all over the place which is great as I often pick up a book I would normally have never looked at purely because it's dirt cheap.

4. New distribution models. At one point it looked like Episodic gaming would become much more prevalent, but other than a half hearted attempt by Vale with Half Life 2, and some hit and miss titles from TellTale, the episodic model hasn't worked. As we move to digital it might take off, and if it does that will empower the consumer - they'd be more likely to impulse buy a cheap Episiode 1, and hopefully get drawn in to sign up for the rest of the episodes.

5. Games as beta. Minecraft has proved that a good concept will sell. People paying for an Alpha version?! Sounds insane, but Minecraft has shaken up the market, and channels such as PSN could easily facilitate this.

6. Make (some) games free (or really cheap). Imagine if GT5 had launched at a crazy low (or free) price with limited cars and tracks - barely more than a demo. And the rest of the game was sold as DLC. I think PD would have made more money and created a 'platform' rather than a 'game'. For a similar analogy... When you buy a new razor, quite often the handles are cheap, but the blades are where they get you.

Just some thoughts....

this sounds just awful.

Jdoki5524d ago

I didn't say it was a good idea.. Just an idea!! :)

However, I do think that if PD had just launched with the 200 or so Premium cars, they could have got to market a lot earlier than cramming in all the Standard models as well. Seemed a bit pointless to me. Especially as the game that launched on Day 1 still felt slightly incomplete

emazzuca5524d ago

yeah, its an idea,

But DLC is doing more harm then good right now,

Look at Marvel Vs Capcom 3,

10 years later, they release the game, with half the characters, and are charging 5 bucks per character!

they are trying to figure out ways to make us pay way more than the 60$ now!

Its Criminal!

Calm Down Sunshine5524d ago

The only game in a long time that I've found to be worth the pre-order asking price is Shogun 2.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle16d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga24d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199224d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga24d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman23d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box24d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion23d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7224d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7524d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit24d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14924d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7724d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
