What a sad gaming world you live in if you actually think exclusives will die out. Without competition, we wouldn't have games like halo, uncharted, gears, gran turismo, forza, metal gear, etc. If these console selling games didn't exist then what reason would you have to buy a console?

My point is that without the companies competing against each other, the quality of games would decline to the point that it wouldn't exist. We need fans to battle it out with their money to show companies we want these games otherwise they'll just keep making mundane crap like COD for eternity.

Nintendo will never stop making Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc. and Sony owns several first party studios, so how exactly will they die? Microsoft is the only ones still grasping at straws while their franchises and third party friends are floating over to other platforms.

ME has already gone multi, Bungie is already climbing towards multiplat and even Cliffy is considering bring GeoW over to the Sony side. And most of the third party are either on the PC or PS3. So in short Microsoft is the ones who will have no exclusive by 2012. Nintendo and Sony have already built up their exclusive safety net a long time ago. BTW anyone who says exclusives don't matter think about where Nintendo would be without their beloved franchises.

Well if Dennis Dyack has anything to say about this then yes... in a sense that will be true. However.... I am guessing that this is not going to happen in just one measly year as the title of this article would suggest. Further more while 3rd party true exclusivity is dying off... Timed exclusivity is on the rise. Its been the new business model for the 3rd Party Publisher and I imagine it will continue on for years to come. X game comes out on X platform first.... Even if all the console makers get together and for a unified platform concept...they will still cut deals for timed exclusivity. One could even make the argument that if there is a one console future (as in hardware configuration) then it will all be about software, and even more importance will come regarding exclusive content and feature sets offered by XYZ company for their interface.

So no...exclusives are not dead by a long shot. They merely have been transforming a bit to fit todays business model.

Hmm. If this gen' is supposed to be the epitaph for exclusives, it's kind of ironic considering the 2011 lineup has more quality exclusives cross platform than I've ever remembered. Considering the source though, the strength of Nintendo & Sony's 1st party and select third party relationships probably don't factor much into their equation. I'm playing a Sega exclusive right now.

True that one time exclusive developers like Ready at Dawn, Insomniac, Bungie and Ninja Theory are developing new multiplat games, but it's not damning to exclusives in general once you realise they can't take their greatest hit IPs with them (GOW PSP, Resistance/Ratchet, Halo, Heavenly Sword). Nintendo & Sony own most of the pigs that are makin' bacon for them. MS don't. That's the big difference.

3rd party exclusives are disappearing but the nice thing about having a Ps3 is you get the multiplats AND THE PREMIUM 1st PARTY EXCLUSIVES.

Thing is, exclusives are being overshadowed by multiplats, Sony will continue to have exclusives, as will Microsoft (to a lesser extent) and I will continue to buy what I want, Modern Warfare 3 or Uncharted 3? We already know which more gamers are going to choose. Hell I'm only buying 3 exclusives this year (GeoW3, Forza 4 and UC3) but I'm buying around 15 multiplats. To me, I couldn't care less if exclusives died, because 90% of my time gaming is spent on multiplatform titles.

If your talking about 3rd party support then yes their dying but if your talking about 1st party exclusives going away then your a fool.

And the 2 main publishers of exclusive games are also console manufacturers, they will always buy or pay gamedevelopers to make those special games that make people buy their console instead of the other. And then make more money on every multiplat game they buy for your platform, but it's usually an exclusive game or gameseries that decides on which platform people play all their games, untill the next-gen arrives, sometimes multiple generations in a row just for thát game. The games mentioned in the article are developed for publishers who don't care which version you buy, they're not in the hardwarebiz, ofcourse they prefer their games on as much platforms as possible.
I have 2 consoles myself, and I own far more exclusives than multiplat games. I think they are usually the better games in their genre. Yup, I sure love exclusives, like Gears and MAG, exclusives ftw:)

As much as developers think exclusivity is a waste, I think there are some games that benefit from it. For example, I don't think the Resistance series would do that well if it was multiplatform. Would Enslaved have sold better if it had that magical "exclusive" quality? Heavenly Sword seems to think so. I think for the most part this is an exception rather than a rule but some games can really benefit from the draw the word "exclusive" provides.

this article fails in my opinion. I can understand nintendo or anyone wanting to triple game sales but i don't think it will have that effect...people will own their favorite console and buy the games for it not all three. Ie alot of money in hardware would be lost for the big 3. People would no longer have 2 or 3 different consoles. I have my 360 for gears 1,2,3, campaigns and forza campaign no live. I play everything else on ps3. I like dualshock, trophies, and free online better not to mention the current exclusives in their arsenal. outgrew nintendo.

how can exclusives be gone when sony got their "First party" studio? they own them. It would be like saying that Rare, who is a microsoft first party, would release a game on PS3. If a studio is still first party then it's going to be exclusives. same thing for mario, you can't get the mario zelda or metroid experience on any other console than a Nintendo one

3rd party titles I can see disappearing its all about making money so I can see multy plat now. The only way I see a game being an exclusive is if a company like Capcom shows a preferance to a certain console. Yes this is true but the Halo IP is not Bungie's it's Microsoft's, and I doubt they will let go of that IP no matter who the developer is. GoD of War, Uncharted, Ratchet and clank, No matter who develops these franchises Sony owns them and they will only be seen on a sony platform, less they go the way of Sega. Same for MS and Nintendo. Developers are talent for hire and it's the publisher's who decide where the game that is being developed lands and if the publisher that hires said Developer happens to be a console manufacture as well guess what that game becomes? AN EXCLUSIVE!. Thats what entices the consumer, Where can I play Halo, Mario, or Nathan Drake. As long as the consumer only has one choice for their favorite franchise, platform exclusives will always be practiced to entice every last possible consumer. It's a strategy that Nintendo has used to full extent with it's GameBoy platform.

As for 3rd party exclusives for PS3. It does not need them, as Sony have a stellar group of 1st party studios

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.
