Crysis 2′s Shocking Tech Compromise: Proof

Having played Crysis 2, the latest from the former technical innovators at Crytek, I have to express that I’m not only horrified, but also shocked, at the paucity of graphical accomplishments in what should have been a groundbreaking game. It’s quite clear that massive compromises have been made in order to keep the console market happy, meaning the PC version of the game is crippled to the point where it’s literally impossible to look at without feeling physically sick. I have put together some detailed analysis of the differences between CryEngine 2 and CryEngine 3, to prove that the developers have let everyone down

I don't understand any of this but the gist of it is that the game is awful due to consoles. Or it could be an elaborate joke.

Yeah, it's a joke.

"With Crysis having supported DX12"

:DDDDDDD

hay5449d ago

"32.2m pixel spread across a 12 joule range"
That's some amazing engine.

MaxXAttaxX5448d ago (Edited 5448d ago )

The whole thing is a joke about blaming consoles for Crysis 2 not being as impressive as the first Crysis game. Lol

Damn you consoles! How dare you contribute to the increased budget of our PC games! Hahaha Good times.

sobekflakmonkey5448d ago

yeah, its clearly a joke, and btw i think the game looks amazing on console's and pc, i didnt think i would like it, but i was wrong, its really good, kudos to crytek :)

ct035448d ago

I was surprised to find out that Crysis really pulls 32.2m on the 12J. I knew it had to be up there, but seeing it measured is quite impressive.

It'll be a long time before another game cracks the 32m. Most games still max out around 26m.

Agent VX5448d ago

Yes, this obviously is a joke article. But even though the writer is making fun of PC elitists, his joke is the truth.

Consoles are limiting PC games in terms of graphics. If the best console have or will soon have is Killzone 3 and Gear 3, this is and will be a big disappointment for the next few years.

Technology is supposed to progress, not stagnate with old and out of date consoles. For those of you who find this insulting to your cherrished piece of old and out of date consoles, get a different hobby, for this is not how technology is supposed to progress.

mastiffchild5448d ago

@Agent VX-but today in the Uk, at least, we DO go backwards. Speed limits get slower all the time and what about Concorde? We USED to be able to nip across the Atlantic in a couple of hours instead of, what, six?

Point is high end stuff may always be possible to improve our lot but it doesn't always work that way in reality. Christ, after the Romans went down the tubes we waited hundreds of years before we crapped in a proper toilet again.

I'm not saying that games aren't compromised because(and it works on all platforms to some extent-you think, as an exclusive, Crysis 2 wouldn't look better than it's CURRENT ,multiplat version on THAT platform? PS3 and 360 don't share strengths and have different weaknesses too and with console version parity king(two equal size markets dictates this, sadly)neither console got what it COULD have either.

Just the way it is-we don't get the thing we COULD do because compromise for mass markets or because it's not profitable at the highest end(or to make truly independent versions of a multiplat game which are treated exactly like an exclusive on every platform)to push every pixel for the returns they'd get. Concorde speeds won't be match across the pond for a hell of a long time-and that was 60's tech, the current Veyron and McLaren car(road car) pissing contest is also irrelevant when we can't use a quarter of the speed even when we COULD afford them and barely anyone can.

Better=/=faster=/=newer all the time-even if it seems it should. The PC world moves so damn fast that it's problematic to itself(and devs at times) and may be reaching, with high end games, it's own "Concorde" moment. I hope not but when we all know NONE of the tech we use(from consoles upwards)is ever(or VERY rarely)fully utilised what's the point? The way to guage progress isn't with Crysis but with how the AVERAGE looking PC game looks now compared to five ears ago, no? In that respect I'd say we are moving on but just not at the speeds we once were.

paintsville5448d ago

Well compromises had to be made to get this to run, even at reduced res, on ps3. With only 256 meg video ram and the inability to utilize a unified RAM architecture like the on availabe on 360, the developer had to try and squeeze it down a bit. Good job making do with what limited resources you had to work with on ps3 Crytek.

RankFTW5448d ago

Haha the best bit is "At the time of writing Crytek have refused to respond to any of the points made above, and it’s pretty obvious why."

Yeah they cba responding to a cry baby who should just play the game and quit complaining.

I_find_it_funny5448d ago

oh.. this is about PC.. yea

MaxXAttaxX5447d ago

That's the exact same reason why the PS3 version of Crysis 2 looks better than the 360 version.

When will you give up? How many times must you be reminded that the PS3 has a total of 512MB that is used for the games. Yes, the Cell CPU does process graphics as well.

@NathanExplosion:

Console sales don't make increased budget for PC titles. They make increased budget for console titles which get's ported directly to PC with one or two additional features.

Consoles ruin gaming, that's about it :)

Kurt Russell5448d ago

They're not ruining my games ;)

Mmmkay5448d ago

yeah cause gaming would be huge if there had not been any consoles in the 80s---

RankFTW5448d ago

Console gaming has been around since the beginning of time. Well game time.

Who cares other than saddos and nerds?? How about people actually try and enjoy the game instead of crying about the graphics?? Sick of people moaning all the time about this is looking better than that and refuse to buy it based on that. well I say more fool you I will enjoy crysis 2 on my ps3 as will a lot of other people on here no doubt on there ps3/360/pc or whatever and not care as graphics ain't everything I didn't buy it for graphics. Sure it looks pwetty but i bought to pwn some noobs.

MEsoJD5448d ago

It's a fun game, but defiantly a step back. I suspect that crytec wanted all sides to be the same so the pc suffered as a result. They don't want console owners to feel like they had a sub par experience if they went all out in the pc version like crysis 1. Call me an elitist if you want, but I see no bias in my logic.

I really want to see a Crysis 4 with all the ray-tracing & path-tracing effects. It would be a shame if they canceled the project. Maybe they could do a kickstarter?

DF
" Crysis is something of a tentpole game series for us at Digital Foundry, with a reputation for being an early adopter of graphics technologies that would later define entire generations of PC and console video games. That includes the likes of screen-space ambient occlusion, sub-surface scattering and ray-marched volumetric lighting, but you could write volumes about just how ground-breaking that first game was "

isarai374d ago

I really hope they come out and push the industry forward like they used to. I miss old crytek

PrinceOfAnger372d ago

They all look disappointed by this news especially Alex

JEECE371d ago

Pretty sad that the studio that gave us a monumental game like Crysis is now subsisting on microtransactions from a live service PVPVE game.

Absolutely disheartening.

Maybe putting The Power Rangers in Hunt Showdown will get you some money back. (sarcasm)
