Did Nintendo 3DS Just Bomb? (Modojo)

Although Nintendo's 3DS just hit store shelves, the video game industry is busy analyzing every piece of information that could shed some light on how well the $250 handheld performed this past weekend.

Make no mistake, we expect Nintendo 3DS to sell millions of units to an eager public, but the launch didn't go off without a hitch.

Did it Bomb? Short answer, NO!

I swear its like the DS launch all over again, the 3DS is doing fine

also here is a pic that was taken at a BestBuy for the 3DS.

AGamerOfConsoles5542d ago

I completely agree. How many more of these articles are we going to see?

Just because it doesn't sell out people think its a flop?

Maybe they just met demand better.

wwm0nkey5542d ago

But I though something that was $250 and had 1.3m would sell out day one? /s

Seriously who ever thought it would sell ALL 1.3m in a day is an idiot. In a week it should get close though.

eagle215542d ago

I laugh how this aricle magically appeared when 3DS wasn't #1 on amazon (trading places only with 3DS software...lol.. but the haters are fighting a losing battle so they are all over the place. But go to the bestsellers list for usa amazon. Looks like Nintendo dropped the "bomb" on the competition to me...lol. It's crazy how many articles don't hit the front page, but this mediocre journalism does? Shame on you moderators.

Buff10445542d ago

My Best Buy can only put out one system at a time to avoid being robbed, so that pic isn't necessarily indicative of sales.

wwm0nkey5542d ago

There is A, yes a singular game left on the shelf. Obviously they probably have some in back but to see all of that gone is an obvious indicator of good sales.

Bull5hifT5542d ago (Edited 5542d ago )

I saw 5 3DS at the best buy around here asked them when they would put up a demo unit, guy was lost?... I wasnt expecting to see one for months & ive messed with the stores inventory sometimes to hide a few copys of new games for my friends behind some other stuff, what does that pic mean

BUT WAIT..

IndustryGamers spoke to some analysts, and they actually weren't surprised by the supply situation. "With an estimated 1.9MM units shipped into the NA/EU channel, I wouldn't anticipate any stock-outs," EEDAR's Jesse Divnich told us. "The 3DS launch in North America and Europe produced sales that Nintendo should be proud of. Given the awareness and hype over the 3DS, I'd expect week 1 3DS sales to surpass week 1 DS sales from 2004."

David Cole of DFC Intelligence agrees: "It is always interesting to watch supply and demand around launch. Nintendo said last week that they had record pre-orders BUT they expected plenty of stock and no shortages at stores. I think it was really down to just having a full supply where past systems there has always been trouble getting manufacturing up in time for a launch. We think it will be a very successful system."

He continued, "Nintendo forecast shipping 4 million units of the 3DS through March 31. That is just a huge amount of hardware. It would be an absolute mind blowing record if they sold out of all of them in such a short time. By contrast the Wii shipped 3 million worldwide in its launch period (which was mid-Nov to 12/31/06). In other words, we could see Nintendo announcing some records soon when figures are tallied."

As for Pokemon having any negative effect on the 3DS launch, the analysts didn't see it that way.

"Launching Pokemon on the DS [prior to 3DS launch] was not a mistake. Expect Nintendo to be much more methodical with their 3DS release schedule compared to their previous launches. Nintendo realizes that the competitive landscape is much more fierce than with previous hardware launches and you can expect Nintendo to leverage their strong portfolio of brands in a strategic manner to drive hardware awareness when it is needed," Divnich said.

He added, "I don't believe Nintendo needed a 'killer app' for the 3DS launch. The 3DS alone and its unique features will drive initial sales. Launching a large branded Nintendo title at the 3DS launch wouldn't have delivered any incremental hardware sales. It would be much more efficient for Nintendo to wait for the initial launch buzz to subside before releasing a big first-party title, which of course will raise awareness back to its launch levels."

http://www.industrygamers.c...

and fyi to all you morons, its outsold the original ds and wii in every damn region......what do you want? hell consoles havent moved this many units at launch. 2 million units in stock at launch is absurd and has never happened before. Every preorder and person who walked in has a 3ds and that will always be the case

InLaLaLand5542d ago

Just wait a few months, it will still sell well. I think probably pricing and maybe a new model probably stopped some people buying it (just my theory).

jchild105542d ago

just because there are units still left in the stores is hardly an indicator of how poorly a system is selling - perhaps nintendo got the supply right for this launch.

CobraKai5542d ago

It's only been a few days! Jump the gun much. Sure it's not sold out everywhere (last time I was there, my best buy still had some), but to call it a bomb so close to launch is stupid.

Chronicling Akuma's Street Fighter appearances

Akuma isn't one of the original Street Fighters. He made his first debut in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, the fourth version of Street Fighter II. Though, you might not have seen him unless you were an especially proficient player or had access to cheats. Akuma began as a secret character. Rather than only remaining hidden for one game, he's remained a secret through many installments in the series. If you wanted Akuma, you almost always had to work for him.

Top 5 Worst Console Launch Games

Knack has been in the PlayStation 4, and while it isn’t a terrible game, it isn’t a game that would have urged anyone to purchase the brand new system when it arrived.

Super Mario Land on #1 and not even a mention of Ryse while Knack is on #4.

Sometimes...opinions are just not right.

Some really mediocre launch games were Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle (Mega Drive), Beauty and the Beast (CD-I), Virtua Fighter on the Saturn that was such a bad port that they released a VF Remix,Street Fighter: The Movie (Playstation), Godzilla Generations (Dreamcast) and TransWorld Surf (Xbox)

Listing games like Perfect Dark Zero and mentioned Super Mario Land however...come on.

jokerman273766d ago

I actually enjoyed Ryse more than am I am Knack.

Hoffmann3766d ago (Edited 3766d ago )

By that logic you also enjoyed Ryse more than Perfect Dark: Zero or Super Mario Land.

In your Article Introduction you write "This got me to thinking; What games were terrible launch titles that companies should just hang their heads in shame for? These are five of those titles:"

You should have mentioned it right there that this is just a list of 5 games you did not enjoy as much as others (like Ryse..lol)

Describing it as a list of the worst console launch games without listing even ONE of the really bad launch games on consoles is ...just not right.

Kribwalker3765d ago

Perfect dark zero was a fantastic launch game tho, you really missed a lot of terrible games that should have been on there

Pilot wings 64 for one
x squad on ps2 wasn't very good
Everything on 3do, jaguar and sega cd were terrible as well

Automatic793766d ago (Edited 3766d ago )

RYSE was a great launch title and Perfect Dark was not a bad game.

FN4GM3765d ago

The reviews for Ryse strongly disagree with you.

Concertoine3765d ago

I agree on PDZ, beats most stealth games these days. 32 player online plus 16 bots was cool too.

I miss when games had bots :(

sammarshall1023765d ago

Ryse is excellent especially if you like the Roman history type of setting

3-4-53765d ago (Edited 3765d ago )

Perfect Dark Zero on Xbox 360 had bots though so I actually had some fun playing it on the different maps.

I think it only seems bad in comparison to the N64 game and expectations were so high.

Super Mario Land is actually a pretty decent quality game with it's own play style....it's different in the way that Mario Bros. 2 for NES was different.

coolbeans3765d ago

That's really the thing grinding against PDZ the worst too. I can totally understand old fans being frustrated with it not living up to the legend but those types of expectations are bound to not be met when putting it up so high with one of the most ambitious console shooters ever conceived.

It showcased some poor design choices but I still had a blast with everything in online multiplayer (+ cheap DLC maps too).

Tobsesan3765d ago

Ryse was a good game for a launch titel. Multiplayer was really fun and SP was solid.

sammarshall1023765d ago

It's still my favorite Xbox One title

otherZinc3765d ago

Perfect Dark Zero has one of the best Campaign Co-op Modes in the history of Campaign Co-op Games.

Especially when next-gen games today don't even offer Campaign Co-op.

Sciurus_vulgaris3766d ago

Perfect Dark Zero is not a terrible game.

Sonyslave33766d ago

idk even know why that game is even on this list

Sciurus_vulgaris3766d ago (Edited 3766d ago )

One of the authors reasons for listing the game is because it's not a good as Halo 2 and Halo:CE.

-"Mistake number two wasn’t Rare’s fault, but the first-person genre had changed a bit. Halo was the wave of the future, and it seemed that Master Chief had tea-bagged Joanna Dark before she even got out of the gate."

For its' time perfect dark zero was one of the best looking launch titles. The mp was also well regarded, the single player levels changed depending on difficulty and objectives could be completed in several different ways. If not being as good as Halo 2/CE makes a game terrible; I might as well throw out most of the fps games I own lol.

Kribwalker3765d ago

I played that game so much at launch, loved it. It also introduced my wife to first person shooters and turned her into a gamer too.

deathtok3766d ago

No. Just no.

Most of the Sega CD launch titles were garbage. Sewer Shark in particular was the worst.

I felt bad for any kid that got CyberMorph with the Atari Jaguar too!

As far as bad launch titles go... this list is soft.

dillhole3765d ago

Really poor article. Trying desperately to get controversy clicks with it's obviously baiting #1 choice. There is nothing of worth here.
