BBC: How Dangerous Are Computer Games?

Well usually something like this I wouldn't bother posting but as it featured on the main page of the BBC's technology section I felt it deserved some attention. It appears they now have kids 'investigating' on something that has been proven time and time again to not have the effects people claim it has, pay particular attention to the counselor that claims "it is estimated 3/5s of all under 16s have some sort of addiction to these games"...
Now I am fully aware that this is a "BBC schools report" however the fact they have published it still surprises me. What do you guys think?

An interesting little bit of research, not really substantial but its only a kids report. My problem is these things pop up all the time and everyone shouts about addiction. There is a difference between relaxing by playing video games and being dependent on games in order function normally.

Time does not = addiction, I'm a student, I'm at school 17 hours a week doing 3 A levels with each I'm supposed to do 6 hours of independent learning a week, so 35 hours a week n because of this I can only play games 2,3 hours a day (if at all) but because I play more than 20 odd hours a week I'm addicted and its going to cause me problems, really bugs me that games get blamed for causing problems and not a stupid history A level (which it does)

Anyway rant over, thoughts anyone

I have to work 40 to 45 hours a week which really takes away from my time to relax and enjoy video games or socialize. I can't function unless i go to work. When i'm at work i'm always stressed to perform at my peak. When i get off work all i think about is work and what i gotta do the next day. so does that mean work is addictive and bad cause i feel i spend way too much time there.

So in turn this article should be how dangerous is WORK or School cause they take up more of everyone's time than video games ever will.

Anyone that is addictive to video games has or should have a job as a video game tester. Problem solved.

@Phoenix Devil...your right these articles pop up once a week like clock work.

Video game testers don't just play the game lol.

They follow repetitive and strenuous specific tests multiple times a day for every build.

They need good technical knowledge of programming and game production methods and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Being good at playing games, or liking playing games, or even having played games much in your life - none of these things are requirements at all (hence why nearly every game out these days is a buggy pile of shit tbh)

But yeah anyway. Anyone addicted to video games should count theirself lucky that they are not addicted to something much worse.

People can get addicted to absolutely anything. Also there is that saying: "too much of a good thing".

These news reports are stupid, but this one is particularly annoying: these kids have obviously been told what to say or been persuaded by teachers etc. Their comments are totally biased and show no depth of thought or intelligence at all. Stupid show :P

@PhoenixDevil
3 A levels takes that much or your time? Learn to photographic memory :P

@ATiElite

Yh full time employment is a lot worse than any school work and your right it would be nice to see research done into the over all bigger picture of gaming + life style + work even then though it would be reductionist as there are too many factors to count, so for now I'd say that moderation is key, a hobby is a hobby weather its playing games or sports too much can be bad

@bozebo

your comment highlights exactly why I couldn't be a professional beta tester, once it gets repetitive the fun will be gone and I'd probably end up playing my own games like I'm testing and it would ruin it for me, being a game developer sounds like a dream job but I also think it could end up making me hate gaming

Agreed about the addiction thing, reminds me of an article on here about '2 hours of gaming is equivalent to a line of coke' and they were trying to paint that out as if its as bad as being addicted to a hard drug though I don't consider myself addicted to gaming its just a good hobby

And yes on paper 3 a levels do take that amount of time, on paper ;) I have plenty of free time and consider myself lucky for it though photographic memory would help :P

hmm at at college studying 5 A levels so really I should be doing more lol I don't :s but not becuase of video games, just so many other things I would really rather do lol although now is the time to stop finding excuses and get on with revision I think :/
Tbf though 5 full school days already means I do at least 30 hours of work a week :O

PhoenixDevil5527d ago

I wouldn't worry your self bout doing more work, 5 a levels is ambitious though. With my comment about the extra independent learning work we get told that but I don't know of one person who actually does all that time.

I put off work myself and not directly cause of gaming, take away my console and I'll go on my laptop instead take that away I'll read a book take that away I'll be bored watching TV take that away and I'd probably still find away to procrastinate, but your right you have to put in the effort to get something out of school and a levels
