Heavy Rain: did it deserve BAFTAs?

I just finished Heavy Rain, and I'm now baffled as to how it won the BAFTAs it did.

This is an opinion piece, nothing more.

did it deserve BAFTAs?

yes

author of this "opinion piece" just need to understand than no one need his opinion on game, that comes out year ago

Vojkan5541d ago (Edited 5541d ago )

Well said gravemaker

If it is an "opinion piece" then you should not ask questions. Because it isn't opinion any more. You are questioning it, wanting debate over that subject. Another f..l contradicting him self. THINK!

hennessey865541d ago

is in my top 10 all time greats, its a master piece

sowasred20125541d ago

The question is simply a title, rhetorical at most.

I played it, didn't like it, don't understand why it's so well regarded - what's wrong with trying to start a debate about it?

njd825541d ago

I think publicly posting an article to a community which is open to comments kinda suggests that they might wanna get a bit of a debate going.

nix5540d ago

how abt asking if OP was worth winning game of the year? HR is a great game. let's just stop there?

Scary695539d ago

@ sowasred2012

The reason it is well regarded is because it was UNIQUE & DIFFERENT. Common sense will tell you this, it's not your same old shooter or other action game that is released almost every month. It gives the players choices with consequences not your everyday game this is why this is a GREAT game and will always be well regarded. Now get over it and move it along.

The question really is "WHY did Heavy Rain deserve BAFTA"?

As far as I can tell, the darn thing isn't even considered a game....

RememberThe3575540d ago

It depends on who you ask. I consider it a game. But if you don't like it you might not be so inclined. Its a game the same way the old PC adventure games were games. Just because it doesn't represent something easily recognizable doesn't mean it's not a game.

Raf1k15540d ago

Of all the different types of digital entertainment I like games the best because they combine sound, visuals and interaction. I therefore define games as being interactive digital entertainment and as such Heavy Rain easily falls into that catagory.

Figboy5540d ago

I take issue with the notion that Heavy Rain isn't considered a game. The video game definition of game is loosely defined as an interactive experience in which the player is given a goal, some game play mechanics, some type of obstacle(s), and is challenged to accomplish the goal.

The means by which the player is given to complete said goal is not set in stone. If that were the case, we'd only have genre of games.

Heavy Rain gives the player a goal at the start of each scene, as well as gameplay mechanics and obstacles. Just because the game forgoes traditional game design elements doesn't make it any less of a game. Flower is a very non-traditional game as well, so should we say that it's not a game as well?

Gamers this generation tend to have a very narrow-minded view when it comes to game genres, shying away from anything that doesn't conform to a genre standard, and vilifying it. The irony is that they then get up on their soapboxes and lament the lack of creative game concepts and ideas.

Heavy Rain is not a perfect game, and there is plenty to criticize, but what the game does well far outweighs it's flaws. As an experience, there is literally no other gaming experience like it currently. A game doesn't have to be flawless for it to be praised and recognized by it's peers.

Xander-RKoS5540d ago

@Figboy

While I agree with you, Heavy Rain is not an entirely unique experience. One problem I noticed with the game is that where most games would have you die if you failed a challenge, Heavy Rain actually scripts it so you can't die. Trust me, I tried to get Ethan killed so many times and then I looked online and saw that there are scripted parts where any character can die.

Much of what David Cage said like "anyone can die at anytime" is a lie and "choices matter" is also a lie since most choices are meaningless.

MysticStrummer5540d ago

@Xander - Come on man. That many different endings means that choices do matter. I know the "good" ending I got and the "bad" ending I got were very different and both awesome in their own way. Characters can die in different ways at different times. Norman Jayden can die in several different ways in one scene alone. Of course the game won't allow you to kill the main character... sheesh. Heavy Rain is pretty unique in today's gaming world.

So i guess only games where you get to shoot people in the face and blow shit up is considered a game right? How long you've been gaming? Like 5 years or something?

drosera15540d ago

Oh, and i guess you class Halo and COD as REAL games eh? Wow, the skill needed to aim and pop someone in the head/torso must be order of magnitudes more than playing Heavy Rain, a game where you make emotional decisions, explore, and solve puzzles. Heavy Rain is great, the only people who can't see that are online FPS maniacs who's opinions are meaningless in the intelligent, thinking world.

Neckbear5540d ago (Edited 5540d ago )

So, you're going to disregard an opinion just "because the game came out a year ago"?

That's a rather weak argument, even more considering the author presents his points pretty well, providing logical explainations against the fallacies of what said awards represent, and how they are NOT applicable to the game.

On-Topic: No, not really. Everything that Heavy Rain did was done better before. All it had going for it was the hype and media attention it got, nothing more.

Hell, quoting the article:

"...so all I can think is that those other nominees must have really dropped the ball in the story department, that their stories were comparable to the river of shit Dufresne crawled through at the end of Shawshank, so awful were they that the award went to Heavy Rain as the best of a bad lot."

Rynx5540d ago (Edited 5540d ago )

@sowasred2012

There's nothing to debate though. You don't like it, YOU don't get it, BUT the BAFTA's did. What's there to debate about? Obviously if you didn't get it while playing the game, you won't get it at all. You're just starting nonsense over a game that's a year old. Let it go.

I don't get why everyone still devours COD.
I don't get why there's still hate on anything PS3 related with certain media outlets.
I don't get why Capcom still tries to rip off their fighting game fans with DLC.

...But you know what, I move it along. pick your "debates" wisely bro....

sowasred20125540d ago

These are all good points - the only reason I've written this is because there's such a rabid love for the game, and I fail to see what the fuss is for.

I'm reacting to the hype surrounding the game more than anything else.

MysticStrummer5540d ago

Exactly Rynx. No one can make him get it, just like no one can make me understand why Halo is still so popular. Every year, people claim they'll never buy another Call of Duty and yet the sales end up being staggering. Every time a PS3 exclusive shows up, it's subjected to amazing scrutiny and criticism, when the same "issues" are completely ignored in other games. Hell, look at the recent debate about Crysis 2. A certain group thinks it looks better than Killzone 3, despite the fact that it displays the same problems that a PS3 multiplat gets slammed for in comparison. Lower rez, screen tearing, less going on, bad AA, stupid AI... none of that means it isn't a better game, with the exception of the bad AI, but to claim it looks better is ludicrous. What good is it to have a larger environment with more choices when the AI doesn't require you to try different things? I don't understand any of that, but I do understand why Heavy Rain deserves to win awards. There's no point in asking for an explanation at this late date.

It won because of great story telling and innovative choices they made when making the game.

Close_Second5540d ago

The underlying story was ok but its execution was full of plot holes.

I have to admit I loved the game but was completely disappointed by the ending.

dragonyght5540d ago (Edited 5540d ago )

lol which one?

Close_Second5540d ago

Only played it through once. I don't often play any single player game through a second time and when I do I don't often finish the second play through.

njd825541d ago

I personally agree with the article and this is coming from an avid supporter of all things playstation.

It neither worked as a video game or as a film - the latter being what most supporters claim Heavy Rain should be viewed as. If thats the case then I hope all supporters are looking forward to the next Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson film as that'll probably be around the same maturity level.

RememberThe3575540d ago (Edited 5540d ago )

The level of interaction available make it impossible for Heavy Rain to be considered a film. If it was a film it would be a linear experience. Heavy Rain is far from linear. Your action dictate the entire direction and pace of the game.

Heavy Rain is in fact a video game. And as I said above. The fact that there hasn't been anything else like it in a decade does not make it less of a game.

Uncharted is more of a film than Heavy Rain.

MysticStrummer5540d ago

Comparing Heavy Rain to a Dwayne Johnson film... That fails on so many different levels. You can't possibly be serious.

PimpHandHappy5541d ago

and please dont take this wrong 360 fanboys

The average age of a PS3 is 10 years older then a 360 owner.. Gameinformer.. 360=26yrs PS3=35yrs

now i have friends that debunk that but they also own a PS3... As older gamers most of us have kids and the story in HR had a impact on all of us that do have children.. Thats why it was so well regarded.. the story

now let me say.. I had fun with it but not enough fun to play through multiple times.

elpresador5540d ago

....usually when people bring up age of owners they usually go to maturity level and if you are in the so called average age of a ps3 owner then it makes me wonder why on earth your SN is PimpHandHappy. Not the most mature of SNs/

Also, the kids in the game are like what, 8 or so? So a 26 year old cant have an 8 year old child or if they do are still not mature or old enough for the story to have an impact on them?

I know you said please dont take this wrong but look at my first paragraph, claiming an age (which i am sure you will say maturity as well) is a big factor but then you are a mid 30s gamer with the sn you do is pretty hypocritical.

PimpHandHappy5540d ago (Edited 5540d ago )

maybe even 5 now

i have been a commenter of here for a very long time... Im posting on a gaming website and compared to many others on here my name holds very little weight towards my stance on games or life. Trying to say your immature because you use the word "Pimp" in your name is silly. Its just a screen name like i said on a gaming website

and yes we can bring up maturity of PSN vs XBL but we all know both have idiots but from what i have played i would say PSN has more adults and less childish adults

AnxietyAttack5540d ago (Edited 5540d ago )

@PimpHandHappy

LOL! Go back to playing with your toy!

PimpHandHappy5540d ago

i have big boy toys at my age :-)

fooltheman5540d ago

gameinformer.. 360=26yrs PS3=35yrs

these are only averages... we should look at the variance too...

DarkTower8055540d ago

@ PimpHand, well said. Its the emotional aspect of HR why so many (including myself) loved it. Some people just aren't there yet in life and can't understand that yet.

yes it deserved it. now the question should be....

"Does Call Of Duty deserve to be in each game of the year nominee every single year?"

that answer is NO!!!
