How anyone could consider the PS3 dead so early into a systems life cycle just beggars belief! I've used both systems extensively and the PS3 is better by far.

The XBOX 360 is by no means a dominating force. If someone has evidence to prove this then present it.

You can go along as say the xbox 360 is a more enjoyable gaming console. Sure thats opinion. You can say there are more games and they are better.

But Sony will still end with more consoles sold than the XBOX. IT may not be profitable, it may not have the attach rate, but it will finish infront of it because of things MSFT cant control.

Shooter fans might, hardcore gamers might. They dont appeal to enough of the market. Sony does, and they will continue to. They also have blu-ray which, whether you like it or not, will appeal to alot of people when the price is right. Shooters may even continue to sell more copies on the Xbox for the rest of this generation, but by the end Sony will have sold more than 2x the xbox.
It may not become a better console until the end, even though i think it will very shortly.

If sony fails, then gaming will stall. This generation will end up significantly smaller than last gen.

There is NO WAY the xbox will sell more than 25 million. People will choose not to adopt, or just stick with the Wii, before they go to the Xbox, regardless of price.

Also, the statement "next gen begins when we say so" is actually true when you think about it. DO you really think SOny will stop making PS2 games before they are confident the PS3 can be the more attractive option? Once the PS3 is in a good spot, and making games for the PS3 becomes alot easier, the PS2 will lose alomst all new software. Then people will jump right back to Sony.

Failure I mean its selling at the same pace as the 360 last year at a higher price and no games(as so they say). It has sold a horrendous 5.5 mil in 10 months at a similar pace as the two other failures PS1 and PS2. And crappy games like Uncharted MGS4 KZ2 UT3 FFXIII look like garbage. $500 PS3 after being dropped made little diference this new priced PS3 could see a bigger or a longer lasting spike although its closer to the mass market range the other consoles are just about already there($200 casual mass consumer range).

Games and price are not the only factors. The PS2 was a multi cultural phenomena and favored by mainstream opinion Sony has much work to do to get the average person to say *I'm going with PS3 fuc the others* like in the past. Its the other way around right now due to Sony's earily marketing and the media punishing Sony when proven wrong with their PR stunts before PS3 released.

It's less than a year old. While it hasn't exactly lived up to everyone's expectations, it's too early for anyone to call it a "failure."

It's also far too early to call the Wii or 360 winners or losers.

This from someone who has no intention of buying a PS3, but appreciates it after spending some time playing Warhawk and Lair--and REALLY looking forward to Ratchet and Clank--on a friend's system.

I dont even think we would be having this convo on a message board. It is simply not fair to compare the Xbox to the PS3 in terms of sales. Or even AAA titles.

Would you want to compare xbox right now to where the PS3 will be a year from now? Its not a failure, and is selling at the same rate as both the PS2 and the 360 was. The first year has always been a rough year for consoles.
The Xbox's first undeniable AAA title was Gears of War, a little after a year of being out.

Our first undeniable AAA title looks to be Ratchet and Clank, but Uncharted seems to be the AAA title more in line with GOW. Whats the difference?

Also, just because a game isnt exclusive doesnt mean it isnt on the PS3. Some games are better, some are worse, but atleast give it a year, especially since its selling as well as the Xbox, and will prob be selling better first year when the 40gb drops. Sony isnt doing as well as anyone thought it would, but surely isnt a failure. If MGS4 sells less than 1 million first month, then you can call it a failure.

I just joined the site while looking for next gen news and I must say that all this talk of the console war being over is severely premature. How long did the other console wars last? And when does a console die 11 months. It's a shame people suspend common sense when they get riled up over mostly rumors(from what I have read)

PS3 has been selling on par with Xbox 360 worldwide with a higher price point. It's not so far from PS2, even when PS3 costs about twice what PS2 did in its lifetime. Xbox 360 has had many advantages, like price and launching early. Wii is also very cheap. PS3 is the most expensive mainstream console to date and it's not failing like NeoGeo or 3DO did. At least not yet and it's too early to tell since PS3 is not even a year old (it's 6 months old in Europe!).

It would be a fair comparison if all consoles were the same price, and were launched at the same time. Why don't we wait for the situation to even out a little bit? Because holidays have yet to kick in, more games have to kick in this holidays, and the post-pricedrop sales have yet to be seen. Furthermore, 2008 has many games and even more surprises to be seen. Perhaps another price drop before GTA4 in march or so, and definitely many games. Perhaps even ANOTHER price drop for holiday 2008. 2009 will also see RE5 and other multiplatform japanese games that will pretty much sell PS3s rather than 360s in japan (you can't deny that).

In 2010, the landscape in japan between 360 and PS3 will definitely show (the changes will pretty much start with WKS and MGS4 early next-year). The influence of having a larger PS3 install base in japan on the rest of the world will be noticeable with several japanese PS3 exclusives (especially RPGs). How much do you think PS3 will be by then? My bet is that by holiday 2008 we will have a $199 "core" PS3, a $299 middle one and a $379 "expensive" one. By 2009 it would be between $149-$299. By 2010, $129-$249. By 2011 $99-$199. 2012: $99-$149. HDDs will be subject to keep growing. And remember it's a marathon, not a sprint.

I think that is a pretty reasonable price reduction scheme. For me, the wild card is if MS can fix their hardware issues and attain diverse studio support. Honestly, I'm not sure either of these will happen. They haven't yet, and they have had now almost two years..

The diverse games thing is far more important than people give credit to. Hardcore 360 fanboys seem to think that the world plays shooters and western style RPG's above all others. I'm sorry, not only is that not true, it proves how short sighted and narrow minded these individuals are. The truth is that right now and in the future, I would bet my money that the innovation, variety, and keyword: CASUAL fun, are going to come from Sony and Nintendo. MS will continue to dominate the shooter space, but I don't think it will go much beyond that. I really think also that the hardware issues that are continuing to bite MS in the A$$ will not be good in the long run.

That's not to say it can't do better, but as of right now the PS3 is a distant third in sales.So far the 360's sales are very close to the original Xbox's which for lack of better words, wasn't good. The PS3 is selling even worse. The 10 year plan isn't as great as it sounds, but isn't rediculous either. At the rate Sony is going it will be three years before the console even comes close to the sub $200 mass market price point. Untill that happens it will be lucky enough to stay on peoples radar. In three years we will be about five years into this generation and that will bring us close to the next. It is a very risky decision to be that close to the next gen before mass market saturation begins since Sony will run the risk of being outdated with a small user base which was choked by a higher entry point.

The PS3 can still do very well this generation, but it is a long uphill battle to get there. The 40 gig isn't the answer since $400 is still a hardcore pricepoint and most of the hardcore buyers either have one already or they will pay more for the "good" version.

You have to look at what makes and breaks a game console...and that is video games. And the ps3 lacks that department. Resistance and Motorstorm are the only big sellers topping around 1.3million total sales each. While the 360 has about 20 games that already hit the million sale mark. Ps3's big games like Heavenly Sword is a sales flop with 180k total sold. While gems like Bioshock is going to be another million game seller. The 360 is a making some serious $$$ for game developers while the ps3's is just pissing off developers.

Not to mention the 360 is absolutely crushing the ps3 in the gaming department...You can't argue FACTS kiddies and check out the recent releases...

lets just look at the facts here not through any fanboy rose tinted glasses as a gamer

the ps3 with it's apparent lack of games and to high a price point has and is selling more or less the same as the 360 did in it's first year, it's also selling more or less the same as the ps1 and ps2 did.
it has an install base of around 5 million worldwide even tho it apparently has no games.
So with that in mind i would say it's been a remarkable success, with the imminent price cut and new model the ps3 will surpass the 360 in weekly/monthly sales.
Who do you think is worried at this moment in time, i will tell you who shall i "Microsoft" Sony is atlast starting the push that the ps3 deserves, some great titles coming out in the next few months along with a price cut is going to see the ps3 fly of the shelves.

All the PS3 needs is a true killer app that everyone wants to play. Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Heavenly Sword were okay starts, but they're not MGS4 or FF13. Remember, the Genesis didn't truly tke off until Sega cooked up Sonic The Hedgehog.

The Ps3 will never die. It's not like no one will buy it. But it's definately not where Sony wanted it to be ATM. No one can deny that the console wasn't supposed to destroy everything from the start. Did it? No.

The console will never die and for good reason. Competition is healthy. It may not be my console of choice, until some of the better games start being released. This is weird for me, since I owned a Sony Ps1 and 3 Ps2's.

Never had an original Xbox. But I love my 360 more than any of the PS products. Been lucky I guess, not RRoD, and one person I know has gotten it. This is out of over a dozen people I know personally.

I only know one person with a Ps3. That says something about the console there. When not many people you even know have the console...

But again. It'll never 'fail'. But it may be looked back on in history as a 'failure', or 'flop'. But I doubt it.

Unless after this Xmas MSFT continues to dominate the American market, and start to get the EU market. But doing this would be difficult since most of Ps3's great games are starting to be released next year.

But then again, a lot of those are going to be multiplat.

Ps3 can be considered a failure in terms of what sony wanted it to achieve in its first year. IT was to bring down the 360s dominance as soon as it was launched. Sony's attitude and arrogance has led them to this precarious position. They ignored their key target market, which is the gamers and instead focused on trojoning BD drive and hyping PS3 as a multimedia hub, or even as far as saying that one wouldn't require a computer if they buy ps3. Well the truth is in the numbers, right now they have no clue as what will make the consumer buy it. The real fact is that if they release quality games, focus on educating devs to optimise games for it and drop good number of demos on PSN. This way people will not feel cheated after spending money and then just waiting for some good games to come.

Relasing new SKU will not make a prospective consumer confident about ps3 cuz they will want to wait for some more time to get even cheaper model. So sony just try to push the devs to finish their games quickly but make sure quality is not compromised. Once the library of quality games is established then boxes will start moving, with a little help from a price drop.

wow i only currently own a 360 and really im tired of these articles. with the new ps3 version and some solid games between now and march 08 i think ps3 will do amazing this holiday. i will be getting one and who knows maybe soon the only current gen console ill own is a ps3.

That's very frustrating for me. Why this is not so good for PS3? Maybe this is real that people talks about poor PS3 RSX chip and small amount of memory (256+256 not good enought as streight 512 in XBOX)? Maybe this is real that RSX DirectX 9 level chip? while XBOX 360 can run Direct 10 graphics. If that true so then we could see Crysis level of GFX on XBOX and never see on PS3.

I'am very boring with my PS3. Just look at XBOX 360 games..I am starting to want them more and more..:( Why where is still no so beatifull game like Gears of War on PS3. Why there is still no use of SPE in multiplatform and EPIC's Unrial Engine? That's a long time have allready passed to understand PS3 and start to develop games better that on XBOX 360..but there is nothing...:(

ppl have to remember this is a long term commitment from Sony, and many business have faith in this peice of hardware. It is a very positive not that the BDA recognizes the ps3 as a viable blu-ray player.

No it isn't, the only console to ever beat the PS3 in the first year is the Wii.

IMO too many people want the PS3 to fail, they want Sony to lose this round. They will forgive anything that Microsoft and Nintendo do as long as Sony don't win.

In as much as I want the PS3 to sell well, I DON'T want Microsoft nor Nintendo to fail. Halo 3 means that Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 will be amazing. Mario Galaxy will mean that Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter will be that damn good. Every game now has to be one-upped by the next, kill Sony and the need of competition becomes less.

The PS2 sold 6.5 million in the U.S. alone in the first year. The PS1 numbers were very similar to that. The Xbox 360 sold somewhere around 9 million in year one and the Wii as you mentioned sells better than everything. The PS3 numbers are still premature since it hasn't been a whole year and the Thanksgiving rush is where consoles get their biggest boost, but for the PS3 to outsell the others they have alot of work to do. If the PS3 was selling well you wouldn't have seen so many price cuts, hardware revisions, SKU's and bundles in the first year. This is not common for any manufacturer and typically a bad sign.

PS3 will be released at reduced price, more fantastic games coming out, under 0.1% failure rate. imagine what it will be like if they release Colony Wars for PS3, just like Wipeout and GT5 ( to name a few)
Xbox 360, still unreliable console (over 33% failure rate), RROD, too many american shoot-'em-up games, console is 3 times noisier than PS3.

The Playstation 3 isn't not a failure but it will never enjoy being the Market leader. Wii is now King of the Mountain with Xbox 360 right behind them. Playstation 2's strong position in the Market place is helping to Kill Playstation 3. Sony's worst competition is their own system.

With the Release of Halo 3, the Xbox 360 is selling like Hot cakes. Wii is unstoppable. Your system's dead and you were stupid enough to buy a playstation 3. You bought a system that is a second rate console. The bulk of your games are Xbox 360 hand me downs. Your future titles are Halo Wanna Be's. if the PS3 is a failure gaming will very, very, very, slowly advance to what Sony want it to be. not picking sides but techology wise here is the top to bottom 1. PS3 (it has blu-ray giving it the edge) 2.Wii (motion sensing and thats preety much it) 3.Xbox360 (its dead last because there is nothing really except a gfx upgrade) but PS3 will never be a so called failure in my book for the biggest reason of all Killer apps and the time they come out, each must have game is spaced out not perfectly but spaced out enought to say hey this game is coming out i need to keep my system or get this system

I really agree with this article it is early to say that the ps3 is dead, it is only ignorance of fanboys who say that type of stuff. The charts in the article explain the comparison between the PS1, PS2, Wii and 360 compared to the PS3. I have to say that the PS3 hasn't done that bad. In the early release of the PS1 the PS3 doubled it sales and matched the PS2 early sales.In comparison with the 360's first months the PS3 roughly had the same sales.While the wii is owning much more sales than any other console. But Remember that the PS3 had a higher price tag then the PS1 and PS2 when they launched i believe if the PS3 had a lower price tag it will even have sold more units than any other console. Which makes common sense.

I bought a PS3 on launch day as I did with the 360. I dont care for fanboyism, I just love gaming. Unfortunately my PS3 is just a big shiny door stop and the 360 has been begging for mercy.

Sony were leaders, now their just copycats, thinking they can do it better. The wiimote... er cough cough sixaxis just bugs me, the only thing I like it on is Flow.
The shop is cr*p, the font is too small, the navigation is tedious, looks and feels like any typical website. Community, friends, notifications all useless. It feels boring. PC streaming is all there but again boring. I want more,

BluRay is amazing (as is HD-DVD), The build quality and relibility is amazing!!! although its had a fraction of gaming time compared to my redeye 360.
All I want to do is enjoy owning as PS3 but I dont.

I HATE the relibility, im on my third one and honestly its getting ridiculous, but I cant stop playing it or give it up. It's used for so much. The whole dashboard feels funky, you all know what it can do or are to stubborn to wanna know.

friends,
notifications
and community are amazing.
Downloads are great, Personalisation is diverse. Media centre is the sh1t. Got all my content from my pc all personalised with cool images for all my films (VOB) in 5.1, all my music with album art streaming to the 360 and the best bit is its exactly the same look and feel as my vista pc, that makes me happy, coz it makes me feel like I have a true independant multi-room media system. Hate microsoft all you want but the end of the day the majority of the world runs on windows and if you do love music movies etc then media centre (vista or xp) is great, yeah there are some gripes but most can be worked around with abit of googling.

(all professionals excluded) Most Mac and Linux users always act like there superior beings but at the end of the day, mac (one mouse button??, pleeease... gimme more credit than that, me have enough brain cell to um... use two button) is all about vanity and image to most, and linux is mostly used by the hardcore and underground. Windows is the constant and worldwide, like it or not. I happen to like it.

Oh and the stats in the article are usless. You gotta take the population increase since ps1 to ps3 also the growth and acceptance of the gaming industry in the years that have passed that has led to a ever increasing community of gamers. And the fact that many consumers choose the PS3 over the majority of bluray players on the market on recommendation of many retailers.

Peter Moore said the same thing about the PS2 that it was going to die but guess what the PS2 is entering it's 8 year cycle and all of the consoles from that generation are dead including the original Xbox which they said would crush the competition but didn't. People are just jealous right now that the PS3 is getting better and better really fast and the shocking thing is that Killzone 2 game only uses 50% of the PS3's power.
I found that frightening to know the PS3 still has a wide variety to work with when it comes to technology in games.
Believe it the PS3 is the future it'll take time to master but once it's released get ready for the biggest show of your life.
God only knows what the PS4 will do in it's release of 2016.

since I've been playing video games Atari 2600 til now every new system has had better graphics than the consoles launched before on day 1 except the PS3. Gamers not fanboys want the best when it comes to games. Better graphics, better games and better framerate for less $$$. Wait on new technology to catch up? If this is the case then they shouldn't have released it then. Is this Sony's vision of Next Gen? The PS3 is a good system and will have great games but Sony hyped it beyond belief and the truth is out Xbox 360 is the better gaming system. The world is not filled with fanboys.

Ita not a complete failure, its got some goods games coming out, but if games are going to be getting delayed, then yes it will be a failure. I dont think it will win the next gen console war.

... in just one year. Rumble is 'last gen' - until Sony wakes up, looses its law suite, and decides to add it. And let's not forget how important BC was ... until the over engineered, over priced console failed to sell. Now Sony is ditching everything it can to bring the price down in a final bid to stay in the race.
