IGN: Nintendo 3DS Review

The Nintendo 3DS is not just another handheld, it's the first iteration of a brand new game platform and the first gaming to utilize glasses-free 3D technology. But can the device live up to the hype, overcome the limitations of glasses-free 3D, and produce a compelling new gameplay experience worthy of its $250 MSRP?

I Was Gonna Get One But Then NGP Got Announced

gravemaker5544d ago

same here. ngp with uncharted and killzone is so awesome

WhiteNoise5544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

lol@ buying a handheld for console ports of FPS games.

Gamers these days really are a simple bunch.

I was pretty set on getting an NGP over a 3DS but seeing this video only convinced me to buy a 3DS.

It reminded me that games>>> specs.

Seeing Zelda on this makes me want to go sell my soul for one right now.

I couldn't care less about the 3D aspect, that sucker will be turned off for life.

@Irrationally angry fanboys below.

Ports or not, they are FPS games. FPS is the pop music of gaming. It's bad enough that every second console game is an FPS but now you retards want the handheld lineup to lose it's diversity too with FPS I.P's being spammed as selling points.

If your primary reason for wanting an NGP is for FPS games, then you are not a gamer.

-Alpha5544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

That's ironically why I don't want an NGP.

Feels pointless to me if I can play the full games on the PS3, and since I play handhelds at home more than on the go, I'd rather just play those games on the PS3.

I'll have to see how the NGP does handheld exclusives. The touch screen, backpad, etc. should create some very unique games, but I'm not caring for Killzone/Uncharted for the handheld if they are just going to be essentially PS3 games on PSP.

For example, LBP was on PS3, then made on the PSP. But I don't see the point of owning PSP LBP if PS3 LBP is the better, fuller experience, unless I'm away from the PS3 a lot.

IMO the DS is the perfect compliment for the PS3 in that it has a totally alternate experience. DS exclusives are what I really love, they are totally different from what I play on the PS3.

Just my opinion, I hope you love the NGP :P

Lamarthedancer5544d ago

@WhiteNoise

Are they really ports though I mean Uncharted for the NGP seems like it's going to be a prequel. I don't know about the others though.

LOGICWINS5544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

"Feels pointless to me if I can play the full games on the PS3, and since I play handhelds at home more than on the go, I'd rather just play those games on the PS3."

Exactly. How many people who already own a PS3 will want to spend ANOTHER $300 to have the ability to play "PS3 quality" games on the go when they can get a better experience(5th generation PS3 titles on Blu-ray vs. 1st generation NGP titles) on the big screen at home? I don't see the logic in having a PS3 AND an NGP unless you have a lot of free time on your hands AND your away from home a lot...but then again, if you have so much free time, why not just stay home and game on the PS3?

ksense5544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

wow people need to do their research before spouting crap. uncharted, killzone and resistance are all new games being done by different developers for the NGP and they are NOT ports.!!!

Dragun6195544d ago

I think I'll wait for more games like Legend of Zelda: OoT & Kid Icarus before I get one.

HeavenlySnipes5544d ago

then defend Nintedo lol. The best games for the DS are Mario, Zelda and Kirby games.

I just hope the NGP is more of a mulitmedia device. I want to be able to surf the internet with ease, watch youtube from its browser, possibly have a video chat thing set u over PSN with the cameras it has between other NGP owners. The games will come in due time.

The reason I find handhelds (by handhelds I mean DS/PSP, useful is because they usually have long story modes b/c the devs don't focus on the graphics.)

HolyOrangeCows5544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

Slight movement? 3D effect goes away.
OOOOOH, That'll never be a problem with a *HANDHELD*, right, Nintendo?
2.5 Hours of Battery life. Come on.

It doesn't help that half of the current known games are literal ports of decade old games.

I won't bother for now. I'm sure they'll have 3DSi XL in 2 years anyway.

-
"lol@ buying a handheld for console ports of FPS games.

-
Uncharted and Killzone coming the NGP aren't ports, you rude troll.

"Ports or not, they are FPS games. FPS is the pop music of gaming. It's bad enough that every second console game is an FPS but now you retards want the handheld lineup to lose it's diversity too with FPS I.P's being spammed as selling points.

-
So wanting a handheld with great controls means that the FPS genre is all I want? And Uncharted is an FPS now? lol.
And people who are primarily FPS gamers "aren't gamers" now?
I guess the millions who bought Halo 3, Call of Duty, etc "aren't gamers"?
LOL, well you'd probably be ringing a different bell in the 3DS wasn't a competitor to an upcoming Sony product.

EYEamNUMBER15544d ago

@HeavenlySnipes

i don't get the point you tried to make mario, zelda, and kirby on the DS were never console ports to begin with?

zireno5544d ago

Ok, someone explain to me what's up with that whole " why would I want to play PS3 quality games on the go? "

I mean, WHY WOULDN'T YOU?? you are actually telling me that all handhelds need to look like crap to be enjoyable?! (not throwing crap at the 3DS games tbh), I think most of you people got it wrong, yeah there were talk about having the ability to be gaming on your ps3 then if you have to leave take your NGP and continue where you left of, but that doesn't mean that you will be able to do that with all games, that's up to the devs, and just because the uncharted game for the NGP doesn't have a subtitle it doesn't mean it's just a port from the original, it's a whole new game, as most of the NGP games will be.

-Alpha5544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

@Snipes

I don't own a Nintendo device. Even if the DS has Wii ports, I still don't have a Wii. So I don't get to experience the games regardless. That's why I can't see myself getting an NGP for games like Uncharted

@ksense

I doubt they will be radically different from the experience I can get on the PS3.

EYEamNUMBER15544d ago

@zireno

the point some of these people were trying to make is considering that the majority of people who buy handhelds don't even take them on the go and mainly play em at home

getting a handheld with ps3 quality games is kinda pointless to them since they can just get or already have a ps3 instead

ABizzel15544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

Performance: 8.0
Build Quality: 7.5
Features: 8.0
Value: 7.0 ($249 is a little pricey for casuals)
Longevity: 4.0 (Battery Life problems)

Honestly I think this is a good review. Personally I would have gave it an 8/10. I think they were a little tough on the Battery Life. They say the battery can last as little as 2 1/2 hours depending on the game, max 3D enabled, brightness on high, and Wi-Fi on which is deserving of a 4.0. But realistically early adopters are more than likely going to be hardcore, and they'll have brightness on low and Wi-Fi off unless they're playing with friends, which by what they say seem to move you closer to the 5 hours of gameplay, which is more deserving of a 6.0 or 7.0.

Their other main complaint is the price. $250 is too much for the 3DS IMO as well. It should be $199. The 3DS does come with the AR games, as well as a 2GB SD card, but I'd rather have a $199 price over those, even though the AR games are among the best available for Day 1.

The 3D in the 3DS works extremely well, but as they said it's a very narrow viewing angle, and it does hurt your eyes after playing too long. If you slide more than a couple of inches away from the 3D screen then you lose the effect, as it blurs up, and it really begins to hurt your eyes.

Overall this review was spot on. Again I would give it an 8/10, but whatever. The AR games are the best thing about the 3DS. For those who want one I would tell you to wait for the inevitable 3DS lite with a better battery life, a proven library of games, and most likely a lower price. But if you just have to have it on Day 1, you'll be happy with the 3DS, just as soon as more games come out.

XabiTheHumble5544d ago

"If your primary reason for wanting an NGP is for FPS games, then you are not a gamer." The God of gaming has spoken, his opinion is above all. Chant with me now fellow unworthy gamers UMMMMM!

mamotte5544d ago

@ HeavenlySnipes:

Actually, the best games for DS are games like Elite Beat Agents, The world Ends With You, Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, and Pokemon. And those games doesnt have HD counterparts, and more than that: Those games, if you think about it, use the capacities of the DS, the mic, the touch screen. They are serious and difficult games. Hell, those games doesnt even make sense on another console, they are made for the DS. TWEWY is impossible to port. Completely impossible.

That's the magic of the handhelds. The day NGP starts to show me things like that, instead of copying stiles from the PS3, I'll consider it. But, even if uncharted and killzone are not direct ports, they'll still look common, out of place. Patapon 4 will make the trick, though.

DigitalAnalog5543d ago (Edited 5543d ago )

You complain about ports? Ports have always existed since the handhelds entered the market. Have you ever stopped to think that there are people who would buy the NGP does not own a PS3/360? Didn't think so.

Secondly, where were you when the PSP was announced? There was ports from consoles left and right but because the graphics were "last-gen", that doesn't count anymore? What about exclusives? I thought that was the MAIN reason why people purchase the system? Was God of War: GoS and CoO "ports" of GOWIII?

I own both a PS3 and PSP, even as die-hard fans of GoW and MGS, I was unable to purchase these PSP re-iterations. The handheld should be treated like a "unique" just as much as the 3DS. To treat it as a "port" device is just plain ignorant.

-End statement

NewMonday5543d ago

NGP is about options, A LOT of them, it is set to become the gaming device with the biggest rang of games, from hardcore FPS to casual swipe games.

Some are not seeing what the NGP represents to japans developers, in Japan handheld are dominant now, but other markets are dominated by consoles, so developers have to chose where they put their recourses, but now if they can make a game for the PS3 and NGP in minimal time and money, so the NGP also means you will see a lot more games on the PS3.

For example, if the NGP was available 1 or 2 years ago, games like MGS peace walker KH and even monster hunter would have bean available for the PS3.

This also means no pressure for a large NGP install base; publishers get their money from ether PS3 players or NGP players.

I haven't owned a handheld system since the GBA SP but I can't wait for NGP. It's going to be so sick.

Lord_Doggington5543d ago

nothing beats the gba, tho real talk

MGRogue20175544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

3G NGP for me. :)

I wanna' pre-order it but nobody's taking pre-orders yet as far as I'm aware, It'd make me feel like I've got it no matter what & all I'll have to do is wait.. Great feeling. :D

3DS.. Hmmmm, I dunno.. It's not interesting for me, really.. I stick with my DSi

DigitalHorror815544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

I have 100$ on my NGP at GameStop in the Lansing Mall in Michigan. It says "$299" for the price and only shows that Sony is making ONE unit. This all may change at E3 however..

Edit: By one unit, I mean one type of system. In other words, not a separate Wi-Fi or 3G unit, but perhaps one and the same. Hard to know right now.

damnyouretall5544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

@enkeixpress

gamestop has been taking preorders for close to 2 months now i think. i had mine preordered 4 days after it was announced, they acually had it listed at 299. you can try if you live in a bum fuck town but im sure the bigger stores arent taking anymore orders. try though you might get lucky

rezzah5544d ago

Lol so true. I was gona get KH3DS for this and Golden Sun 3, but though it was a hard decision, giving up especially on Golden Sun 3, I picked the NGP in the end.

Blaze9295544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

how do you score a gaming device? forgive me but this is a bit new to me. 7.5/10? That doesn't even make sense. So do we view the 7.5 like we would other video games? or is it on a different scale of 7.5?

ulgh, IGN

EYEamNUMBER15544d ago

i never even knew they reviewed consoles until now

StbI9905544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

Living in the past aren´t we?, every site out there does this kind of review, although kind of new to console, but since handhelds like ipad, iphone, and xperia get reviews, why wouldn´t the 3DS which ain´t anymore a sole gaming device? just search for them.

Urgh...?

How do you score it? hardware, perfomance...etc, no rocket science, anyway.

3DS is a bomb waiting to detonate, but ToL gonna do that then.

damn man, I really wanted this, but gotta wait for the redesign, let the scapegoat do their jobs, ain´t gonna fool me this time N.

but Zelda is a target for life.

StbI9905544d ago

Booo, although I can agree with the fact of NGP looking way enticing, can denial the fact that the 3DS has a gem that made me a fanbot for nintendo again, ToL xD.

Will get damn both.

Masterchef20075543d ago

Same thing happend to me. I was so hyped about the 3DS but when the NGP was shown off that hype was destroyed. I might get a 3DS if the price drops. But i will definatly get an NGP seems more worth it to me.

yen8885543d ago

I really wanted a 3DS and then I watched the NGP gameplay video and I was gob-smacked, so now I'm stuck

Still going to get it, but may wait for a redesign.

Killer launch lineup and a great list of exclusives on the DS and I love the RPGs on the DS

@Rob

Yeah, Killer may also be a strong word, but for me, I'll be stocking up on previous DS games, like Okami and Pokemon lol.

Nintendo always releases new designs-- the original DS looks horrid compared to DS lite.

$250 is also a lot to ask for considering all this. Disappointed in battery life too

Lamarthedancer5544d ago (Edited 5544d ago )

Yeah I was thinking about that....just wait for the redesign. They'll take all the problems with it and improve it.

MrKingofVideoGames5544d ago

The 3DS will have enough quality software to justify a purchase. Plus, think of what can be done with the "off the map" titles like Korg DS-10 and the like with the increased power over DSi.

JonnyBigBoss5544d ago

Not even considering this one. The NGP makes this look archaic.

DigitalHorror815544d ago

I wanted a 3DS and then saw that the NGP was announced. For the Sony fans, it will be well worth the wait!

SpaceFox5544d ago

Expected. I wanted this, but the price and the fact that your eyes can start hurting so quickly turned me off. Just ruins the point really.

Best 2D, Mario World, best 3D, Mario 64. Can't say there's been a bad one, although Mario World 2 wasn't a true sequel. The Mario Land games were good (not the first one) and also Wario Land. I thought after Mario 64, Mario 3D World was excellent.
