Blu-ray: 100GB Disc Showcased

Hitachi has developed a prototype four layer Blu-Ray disc capable of holding 100GB of data.

While companies such as TDK and Panasonic have previously mooted 100GB discs, they have always needed a specially developed optical head in the player to read the disc.

Hitachi, however, claims to have used a standard Blu-Ray drive optical head that's only slightly modified to allow it to read and write data across the four 25GB layers. It's believed this will only require a firmware update to make existing drives compatible.

PS3 will leave the 360 standing when it comes to storage space for game. lol

blue ray is the future not HD DVD!!
when people whats to move on that do u think they will choose? an old technology but a bit modified or a news one that is more advanced?? 25GB>15GB 50GB>30GB 75GB>45GB got the idea!! its ideal for gaming!! and for movies also!!

"PS3 will leave the 360 standing when it comes to storage space for game. lol"

...

Assuming any developer takes advantage of the extra storage space. Which most WON'T, meaning 3rd parties in general. Why? Because 3rd parties have nothing to gain by adding extra content in one version over another (PS3 vs 360).

However, this is only GOOD news for first party Sony game developers who have financial means to take advantage of the extra storage space.

EDIT: Whoever disagreed (and to those to who plan to), you better explain yourselves. Seriously. :-/

Dude I wasn't thinking about extra content...but about extra polygons meaning better character models, raw sound, uncompressed textures...I mean there could be some good use with the extra room...but again that is up to the dev studio.

@BloodySinner- Assuming any developer takes advantage of the extra storage space. Which most WON'T, meaning 3rd parties in general. Why? Because 3rd parties have nothing to gain by adding extra content in one version over another (PS3 vs 360).

- You are absolutely right about that. Why would 3rd party developers use the extra space for higher quality textures or sounds if they can't fit it into a DVD-9 disc for the xbox360? I agree with you that we won't be seeing the better quality coming from third parties or xbox360 titles soon.

Extra room means higher quality content, whether it is CG footage, Sound effect samples, music samples, and game textures. A rough comparison being a 10 megapixel camera picture of a flower vs. your camera phone picture of a flower. That 10 megapixel picture is going to take up alooooot more space... but boy is it going to look a helluva lot better.

what?????

i am so happy. existing BD drives play the discs too

a 100GB Bluray disc that can be read by PS3's = GAME OVER for MS.

Unlike the VHS/BETAMAX "war" there really wasn't a need for such space. However in the year 2007 with SD cards, MP3 players touting how many "gigs" of space it has, computers and media are melding into 1 language that everyone understands.

Bluray is already embarrassing the hell out of HD-DVD sales wise. Hardware wise, the BD group actually makes a profit from Bluray/Hardware. Where as HD-DVD supporters only make $ from bribes.

I understand what HD-DVD is trying to do, lower price player to win the format war.. However HD-DVD is an inferior consumer format. I find it remarkable that troglodytes come out of the dark caves to claim we dont need more "space!" What year is this? We need more space, file sizes keep getting bigger and bigger as it always has. Maybe these were the same people claiming we dont need CD's because we already have tapes & floppy discs.

HD DVD has a WOMD if you don't know that already.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle25d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
