Is graphics technology headed in the wrong direction?

Safety's Off: "Despite the fact that the recently showcased "Samaritan" tech demo is absolutely gorgeous, I can't help but feel as if the next-generation of consoles should be using advanced graphical technology to enhance gameplay conventions, instead of simply providing additional eye candy."

The samaritan demo was about graphics not animations, no need to worry, Next-gen will have better animations then that.

Vojkan5461d ago (Edited 5461d ago )

I am worried for future of video game industry. In this battle of who is going to get upper hand and be first to launch new system, generations feel more and more rushed. Games are so expensive. Hearing number like recently from THQ that they need to sell 2 million to make profit, that is just ludicrous imo.
I remember during PS1 era, it was enough to sell 300k to make profit. On PS2 it was 500k. On start of this gen it was 1 million, big leap. Let's face it, games won't all of a sudden start selling 3 million on average.

Ninver5461d ago (Edited 5461d ago )

@ Vojkan

Well when that time comes and i'm forced to churn out more money for a bloody video game, i'm afraid that's when it's safe to say i quit gaming.

Neckbear5461d ago (Edited 5461d ago )

Yeah, which is why, IMHO, we should stay in the current generation until tools are easier to use, and technology advances more. Right now is when we're starting to see more creative games in a bigger number for that exact reason, games are beginning to be easier, and cheaper, to make.

And oh, don't worry, publishers and platform holders aren't so stupid to rush consoles into the market, that'd seriously hurt gaming as it is.

...Well, I don't think they ARE that stupid, myself.

Active Reload5461d ago

This person in the article is looking at things the wrong way, as far as the comparisons he's making. While LA NOIRE is using an expensive technology, you can see that that is what they're focusing on with their tech, because the character models aren't really all that impressive. My point is, if devs focus on one thing, they'll sometimes sacrifice other things. While Epic does have facial animations/mocap technology in the UE toolset, I've noticed that it's not something they focus on like Uncharted and definitely not LA Noire, but it is there.

helrazor3435461d ago

@ Neckbear

Stupid, not necessarily, but greedy, abso-freaking-lutely.

HappyGaming5461d ago

You are forgetting that the console industry is always growing and that more and more people are starting to play video games.

evrfighter5460d ago

^

you're also forgetting that more and more people in the console crowd are discovering pc gaming.

RedDead5460d ago (Edited 5460d ago )

Honestly back when the Ps was revealed, I hoped the Blu ray disk space meant more open longer games. All this gen brought is graphics and online to consoles. Will next gen just be the same for consoles?

Also I agree iwth NVIDIAGeek. A generation for Pc is short, the tech improves too fast. So either new consoles will come out within 2 years or the graphical differance will get extremely noticable.

Killzone 2/3 is the best for online(non linear) Console graphics/ Uncharted 3 will be the best for linear console games. There are only few improvements between Uncharted 2 and 3 and honestly I think K2 looks better than 3. The limit has been reached I think.

I'm moving over to pc gaming fully now I think. I thought my medicre Pc wouldn't be able to handle Shogun 2 at all, turns out I can play it on medium. The bargins on Steam and generally lower price's for Pc games will help too.

What else...as soon as I get the moneyi'm investing in a gaming Pc. Core i5. 8 gigs ram. Gtx580 and i'll get another gtx 580 in a few years.

EDit--- NECKBEAR

Te only problem I see with that is some devs WANT to move on, they have the tech too move on and there's no reason for them not too from a business standpoint. Battlefield 3 for example. This game will force other devs to try and catch up.

This generation will be pushed into the next. We have to understand that engineerings keep on going with the tech and innovation. They don't want to stop, it's their job and an interest. Game devs see this new amazing hardware and think what they can do with it. Then they do it. Generations get pushed forward. Competition ensures that.

Ranshak5460d ago

@Gumtrol

Console gaming has actually been on a decline year on year, but dont take my word for it check the NPD.

PC gaming has been growing at rapid pace though.

AAACE55460d ago

The problem is like Nintendo said at the beginning of this gen... we are pushing too far, too fast!

I love good graphics just like anyone else, but on the same note, it's hurting the industry.

The power of these consoles advanced so far that developers weren't able to keep up and had to shut down. Current consoles have to stick around longer because developers still haven't used them to their full potential and the cost to develop hasn't went down much. So most developers aren't ready for it either!

In the future I believe we will see handhelds take over, while home consoles only get big budget games. Unless they can figure out a way to make a console that isn't such a burden on developers.

RatherHavaBigGirl5460d ago (Edited 5460d ago )

I agree Vojkan. the industry is moving too fast and its becoming less about the gamers. in fact, with youtube and other sites, gamers thinks they are and tries to be celebrities now smh. its like,"you play video games. stfu". but thats a whole other story. this gen we have seen so many glitches, exploits and just downright bad decision making as far as the games themselves i think we should slow down and master this gen first before moving on. what happens to the low budget developers who make great games but dont have the expensive engines at their disposal?...looks like walmart vs. mon&pops shops. hard to compete yet alone stay in business. i guess theyll be forced to upgrade or stick to psn/xbla/handheld titles or simply stop making games

paintsville5460d ago

Graphics are getting more and more advanced as the months go on. Now we're beginning to see a VERY advanced technique come into play, tesselation. Fortunately 360' GPU supports this in hardware thanks to it's superior and forward thinking design, in starke contrast to other consoles on the market where this tech will surely struggle to be implemeted, if implemented at all. That's not to say that the 360's GPU is ANY where close to what's available on the PC market, it's not. But in the console space it's vastly SUPERIOR to Microsoft's competitors last gen type of GPU's in thier consoles. We're seeing this more and more as cutting edge developers like CRYTEK and Epic push their engines further toward the edge of what's possible while consoles with antiquated RAM architectures and last gen GPUs struggle to keep up.

OhMyGandhi5460d ago

I agree with you Vojkan.
The thing is though, is that because they need to sell 2 million to make said profit, they will undercut creative decisions for a larger audience.
What I think will happen as that as games get higher in price, the indie community will get stronger than ever. downloadable games, such as those made by people on 360's XNA software (which I love, as I've dabbled in it, and one of the biggest reasons why I bought a new 360 after my old one failed, is because for 100 bucks you can get your own game on xbla. which is awesome).

production values for games are reaching near ridiculous levels, and we as a gaming culture, seem to lack the balls to say "wait a minute" when it comes to EA or activision from releasing a crappy port. It's money to them, and they feel that a few people who complain isn't enough to change them. That's a scary reality.

So yeah, although I love that games are looking better and better, more needs to be done in the gameplay department.

people buy first person shooters, RPGs, and racing games. that makes publishers happy.

but you buy enough indie games, and maybe those publishers will realize that certain trends are worthy to follow, and they can't make JUST what sells, but rather try to find new gaming conventions to unveil to the world.

of any game in recent memory, Mirror's Edge to me is one of the most intriguing and strikingly original games I've seen. I wish more studios could follow suit.

sikbeta5460d ago

Graphics are Awesome and really important, but this graphics-race-contest for what game, platform, engine, whatever is the most powerful is not good IMO, I want to play amazing games, with great story, great gameplay and kind of stuff like that, no more, no less...

Shok5460d ago

The 1 million thing is a lie. Like Eric Nofsinger of High Voltage said, The Conduit sold around 500k (it actually sold more than that but at that point they made a profit) he said that that warranted enough sales to make profit and a sequel.

It really just depends on how much the developer spends to develop the game.

sjaakiejj5460d ago

Technology improves, developers need to keep up. A lot of the development companies still ignore modern tools to aid in debugging and software creation, there's quite a few things that could lower the current development costs, given an initial investment.

The problem is, people like to stick with what they're used to.

Lykon5460d ago

agreed vojkan... also I'd say that I was hoping for larger games more than I wanted great graphics...there are amazing open world games like oblivion, but there are a huge percentage of gorgeous looking linear games with narrow corridors of amazing graphics, but are quite short...I'm also dissapionted with how online gaming and DLC packs seem to be eating away at a good quality and complete single player experience. Just cause 2 delivered though

Battlefield 3 is the current next-gen. The animations are life-like.

dabri55460d ago

I sat through a playthrough demonstration of both Battlefield 3 and LA Noire and I can say this. The facial animations in LA Noire are definitely realistic and very impressive. In everything but cut-scenes and even sometimes then, the game looks rough. You can tell most of the resources are being used rendering the faces. Gameplay and story look good though so I'll still want to try it. Battlefield looks very good graphically though the animations look a little stiff, especially after watching LA Noire. Battlefield 3 also was running on two 580's and a very high end gaming computer. I wasn't able to see how much memory or cpu type but I did see the two 580's. The game will be on this gen consoles though I highly doubt it will look as good as we have seen from the PC version.

Amaterasu55460d ago

Somehow.
most games now focus on making graphics realistic but screw up with the artwork and gameplay

GTA4 for example had great graphics, but lacked beauty
and the gameplay made me feel like i was restricted from doing what i want

tdogchristy905461d ago (Edited 5461d ago )

This is kind of off topic but I'd also argue you can make something too realistic. Some things get too pretty that it ends up being unrealistic.

I also looked at the demo and just wasn't impressed. I can't really point out why but it just didnt look like something that constituted a need for next gen. In terms of next gen dices frost bite two and battfield footage impressed me more. "shrug" idk I just could get into epics "next gen engine"

PhantomT14125461d ago

Yeah, some time I find the games' (or CGI films') graphics prettier than reality...

KenAdamsNSA5461d ago

I'd agree that you can make something too realistic gameplay-wise, but we're always striving to push the boundaries of photorealism and blur that line as much as possible.

Personally, I want video games to stop trying to emulate real-life, and deliver graphics that are prettier than reality. When you think about it, we can make worlds that are far more impressive than our own (I still love you, Earth!) without worrying about exact replication.

Anon19745461d ago

But it`s not even photorealism, it`s hyper-realism that kinda bugs me. When I`m playing a game and a texture is just so detailed that it reaches out and slaps me in the face, yeah - it`s pretty but sometimes its too much. When the graphics draw attention to themselves I find it can actually detract from the game itself.

I think games like Uncharted 2 and Killzone 3 struck a nice balance of looking amazing all in all but never being so over the top that it snaps you out of the moment.

--------5461d ago (Edited 5461d ago )

-
Agreed. Better-than-photo-realism in a somewhat fantasy world will always be more beautiful (to me) than a game that mimics what we see every day.

Imagine a next gen Mirrors Edge 2 with Frostbite 2.0 (or better) on a huge HD Monitor hooked up to a £2000 gaming rig, played in the dark. Yeah.

Stealth20k5461d ago (Edited 5461d ago )

grahics have been already in the wrong direction

pure realism over cool artistic style. The result, all games pretty much look the same and are therefore boring

PhantomT14125461d ago

well, making everything look photorealistic surely isn't the right path to follow, but that doesn't mean these games are boring. And there are many alternative graphical styles, though not enough maybe.

Kurt Russell5460d ago

Agreed, there are a few gems that have great art style. XBLA and PSN network seem, to have the lions share but I think a few major titles will start to go that way.

Xfanboy5461d ago (Edited 5461d ago )

After BF3 I can say it's looking good for PC as the next MOH will use frostbite engine 2 (which is primarily Made for pc http://bf3blog.com/2010/12/... hopefully more ea titles will use it!!

I hope other devs will make there games look better as there games might look bland. It's like comparing DAO2 to The Witcher 2!

I really don't know were console graphics are headed as we have to wait for an e3 tech demo of nothing new..

kudakadere5461d ago (Edited 5461d ago )

Am i the only one who thinks that the better graphics and animation get the more rated M games they will be , because if GTA becomes like walking down a real street abusing innocents surely it can't stay an M so they will probably hit a limit to graphics and animations for legal reasons .

Convas5461d ago (Edited 5461d ago )

I thought about this a while ago. There is really going to have to be a limit to the level of graphical fidelity that games go to.

If we continue on trying to reach the holy grail, which is PhotoRealism, we run the risk of of moving from playing a videogame to experiencing a simulation.

I'm going to be honest, I don't want to feel like I'm actually killing real people in Grand Theft Auto 8. And Lord knows, the critics of the video game industry will bitch and cry like never before if it gets to that point.

So at some point of time in the future, we've got to come to a point collectively were we as gamers, as well as decent, civil human beings say "Look, this is as real as it need get. We don't want to be mimicking real life, that's not the purpose of videogames."

We should never forget that playing video games ultimately is about having fun, not trying to imitate the way a bullet explodes a brain or how a tree sways in 60MPH winds.

KenAdamsNSA5461d ago

Very well said, couldn't agree more.

Inside_out5461d ago (Edited 5461d ago )

.
I agree...in part. Video games are not much different than movies these days and that's as realistic as it gets. I think it comes down to how a game is presented and it's story. Pornography is rampant nowadays, especially with the Internet becoming the new generation's Tv sets and that's as dangerous, maybe more so than any game or movie.

Nobody like rules, ratings or any kind of restrictions but society is going to have to decide one way or the other if they are going to crack down on this kind of thing or not.

Ratings are being ignored. You have 10 year olds telling other kids they are going to tea bag them or go balls deep...O_o...Whatever we are doing as a society is not working. Kids HAVE to go to school...as a parent you have no choice unless you want your kids taking away from you. Peer pressure will ALWAYS win out in the end. How do you explain tea bagging or balls deep, the direct result of kids being exposed to some pretty graphic movies and language to a 8-10 year old that never heard such language before but are being exposed to it on some multi-player game...of any kind.

Killing and military tactics are no different. It's as real as it needs to be RIGHT NOW. The air port scene in MW2 was highly criticized for such portrayal. MOH trying to be " realistic " by portraying a current war going on right now...Who's right??? Recently Bulletstorm became a lighting rod, not because of the game play or graphics but the language taken right out of a bad porno movie. Was it necessary??? Of course not but controversy sells. GTA's hot coffee glitch shot that game to stardom and massive sales. Gears 2 had terrible story arc with Dom killing his wife like a horse with a broken leg and one " hero " killing himself...just ridiculous and completely unnecessary if you ask me. Young people are easily influenced and if you don't understand your probably one of those young people.

What's the answer???

Parents taking a bigger part in their children's lives is always a good one, but rarely works....everybody knows parents aren't cool. Not playing games, Watching movies and Tv while extreme, would work...tho an argument can be made for isolating a child which can harm a child if that child is in a regular school and plans on being a part of society. No quick fix here.

Games are being heavily restricted in many parts of the world and I suspect will be out right banned if these devs don't start cleaning up there act...but of course what about the adult gamer...another debate for another article.

BTW...article is pooh. Better graphics...better everything.

Aarix5461d ago

Yes I agree. But gamers and addicts mostly play games to get out of the problematic world we live in today. Books are to "mainstream" and movies are only 2 hours long. Video games also combine with reality by being able to talk and play with friends from ANYWHERE. But we should be worried if it turns to a simulation cause people are already abusing themselves by not eating or showering as it is. All I know is Playing halo, gears, uncharted and especially heavy rain is alot more exciting than reality.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has stirred the Steam pot again, calling out Valve's "30% junk fee"

Vits24d ago

Jamie Hore has been writing about gaming for seven years, and somehow still has not figured out how this industry works. Like, seriously. Publishers lowering their prices just because they now pay Valve five to ten percent less? Come on. That just sounds like someone who has not been paying any real attention to the same industry he supposedly covers.

And of course Sweeney had to jump in. That is kind of his whole thing. Instead of actually working on making his own company’s tools decent, he just deflects and points at competitors, hoping people get distracted long enough to forget that his so called alternative is worse in pretty much every conceivable way for the people that actually matter, the consumer.

Not to mention how unbelievably hypocritical he is when he talks about “benefits for developers.” As if his other tool, Unreal Engine, was not responsible for wiping out thousands of positions across the industry by pushing this massive consolidation of tools. Suddenly everyone is using the same pipeline, the same tech, the same shortcuts, and all that really does is make the eyes of publishers and executives shine greener at how much of their own talent they can cut, because now any cheaper third party studio can step in and do the job, quality be damned.

salis84424d ago

Interesting take, especially when you realize Epic Game Store has yet to tun a profit.

Inverno23d ago

If they spent just as much effort improving the Epic Store as this guy does complain about Steam then maybe they would've set a new standard by now. Thnx for all the free games tho.

Pyrofire9523d ago

EGS really has barely changed since it launched. I don't think he has any room to talk when they've made zero progress in 8 years

gerbintosh22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Epic store has not caught up to Steam, regarding features, but it hasn't had zero progress for 8 years. Either you are ignorant or a liar, regardless you are wrong

Pyrofire9522d ago

@gerbintosh I've paid attention and the updates. It really is almost nothing in 8 years. They added cloud save is the one big one but is really just an expected feature.
Library organization is still a mess. (separating EGS monthly free games would help)
In 8 years there's no defending the tiny amount it's changed.
And it shouldn't need to be said but again, people do not need to be defending multi billion dollar publically owned companies.
I want them to do well, I would like more competition on the storefronts, so I'm going to call them out.

Pyrofire9523d ago

I was on EGS' side for a while with this kind of messaging but EGS has had years at this point and the client has barely improved it's usability at all. It's really a nuisance to look at my EGS library.

US Lawmakers Urge Review Of EA Sale

lol ya think? they're sending all that work to the cheaper labor market as soon as possible. and FYI, that labor market has exploded in the last 5-10 years. They have enough people to replace every single job. But honestly, EA is over filled with useless upper management as it is. You could probably trim 25% of their staff with no real loss in production. They aren't gamers, they're business execs. Just look at how many AI related jobs they're already starting to post. Its also hilarious that PIF owns Battle field 6
